The Robots in Disguise - how come you don't know about them?

By Angel Ceballos

I recently spent a week in London to go shoot one of my favourite bands. We were supposed to do some filming for this Chinese Fashion TV show, do a little filming for a (very) mini documentary on the band, and finally do a photoshoot of which I'd been pursuing for the last year.

As soon as my plane landed, and I managed to get email, I had the unfortunate news that the TV show was on hold for a while and my interview with a designer in London was to be cancelled. Crap. As for the band I had pushed so hard to feature on the show, I would still do a feature for the magazine, Shopper in China. Whoo!

That band is The Robots in Disguise. An extremely talented English female electro punk outfit, Dee Plume and Sue Denim. Most North Americans have not heard of the band, (affectionaly known as RiD to the fans) unless they are familiar with some of the related media successes including The Mighty Boosh or IAMX of which the girls were both affiliated with in the past. I have been a fan for a while and until now played a very passive role in their exclusivity to us North-Amers.

They've released 3 delicious albums, starting with Disguises 2001, Get RID! 2005 and We're in the Music Biz 2008. Each album is complex and compiled of , well of all singles, no filler. Also each album is so different from the other. Disguises is unbelievabley mature and multilayered for a first album. Get RID! is fantastic to get you started, get your blood pumping. It's sort of a wind up to get you geared and ready for album 3(which features the girls naked in painted hipster/emo uniforms on the cover-inspired by The Slits cover for Cut) Music Biz which is, to quote Bodhi from Pointe Break, "100% pure adrenaline!" With songs like The Sex Has Made Me Stupid, Can't Stop Getting Wasted and the awesome Cure reminiscent guitar painted Tears, you cannot stop dancing!

THE QUEST FOR ALBUM 4
The Robots are currently trying to create album 4 directly with the fans using pledgemusic.com - Pledge Music raises money direct from fans who pledge to purchase exclusive merchandise or opportunities for fans to spend a day with the band, or to book them for their own house parties.

Their pledge ends very soon, in a little over a week and they are very under the goal. I have taken it upon myself to spread the word wherever I can in USA and Canada to get the word out and get people pledging. And get people to finally learn about this band and listen to the tunes!

Their pledge ends very soon, in a little over a week and they are very under the goal. I have taken it upon myself to spread the word wherever I can in USA and Canada to raise awareness and get people pledging. And hopefully intrigue people to finally learn about this band and listen to the tunes!

For anyone who pledges by the 25th, I'm offering a free print from my shoot with the band. The pledges aren't empty either, you get exclusive items (explained in the 'read more' of this post)

Peaches, Eddie Argos of Art Brut, Chk chk chk and Har Mar Superstar show their support!
