FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / June 7, 2023 — The Hollywood Stars today announce that guitarist Jeff Jourard is a new addition to the band’s lineup. Jourard will be sharing guitar duties with George Keller who joined in March.

To mark the occasion, a pair of concerts are scheduled for next month. The Hollywood Stars will play the Redwood Bar in downtown Los Angeles on July 21, sharing a bill with the Slamdinistas and Nico Bones. The following day, they will perform an afternoon show at Supply & Demand in Long Beach with special guests the Reflectors and the Juvenile Wrecks. Tickets will be available at the door.

As teenagers in the late 1960s and early '70s, Jourard and Tom Petty were aware of each as they played in different bands in Gainesville, Florida. At the time, future Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ bassist Ron Blair was playing in Jourard’s band, RGF.

Petty’s band Mudcrutch relocated from Gainesville to Los Angeles in 1974. “I had already moved to LA in 1972, and had played a gig at the Whisky a Go Go in ’73,” recalled Jourard.  “When Mudcrutch broke up in 1975, Petty was still under contract to Shelter Records and he was looking for musicians for a new group. Eventually, Ron and I were invited to take part on the sessions for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (1976). I play guitar on most of the tracks and that’s my motorcycle jacket on the cover.”

By early 1978, Jourard was working with Martha Davis on the Motels’ debut album. The resulting Motels includes a pair of  tracks co-written by him, including the second single, “Total Control,” which Tina Turner covered in 1982. Jeff’s younger brother, Marty Jourard, also joined the Motels at this time and is back in the band’s current lineup.

In addition to Jourard and Keller, the Hollywood Stars now includes singer Scott Phares and drummer Terry Rae, both founding members of the group in 1973. Bassist Michael Rummans joined in 1976 and appears on the group’s second and third albums, Sound City and The Hollywood Stars. Keller has been on the Los Angeles music scene since the 1980s and has played with Tina Turner, George Cromarty, Colin Carter, and the Stingrays, as well as alongside Rummans in the garage rock band the Sloths.

In February, Golden Robot Global Entertainment released the four-song Still Around digital EP, which featured the first new songs in 46 years from the Hollywood Stars.
