Sydney-based duo Royel Otis today release their debut EP, Campus, alongside brand new track "Never Been More Sure," out now on House Anxiety / Ourness. The project features their greatly-received single, "Only One," and latest release, "Without U," which was championed by BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders, and Apple Music 1's Matt Wilkinson.

The enigmatic duo’s new single "Never Been More Sure’" opens with a buoyant riff, which elevates the tune alongside it’s bright self-assuredness, “I’ve never been more sure, that I’m where I’m supposed to be." Campus is a bold and glowing body of work from the new band, in their own words, “‘Campus’ is an attempt at creating the songs of nostalgia we have been craving but haven’t managed to find. From coastal cruises to the mellow tunes we want to hear early in the morning, in the back of a cab coming home from a party. Raindrops on the windows and traffic lights bouncing through them. Each of the tracks have their own place in our personal history and were recorded in a comfortable place with mates. Hopefully that translates.”

Royel Otis launched with their debut single in July this year; the woozy, psych-infused groove ‘Only One’ was produced by Julian Sudek and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, MGMT) and set the tone for what was to come from the beguiling new band. ‘Only One’ is oozing with knowing charm and brooding lyricism, “I’m just so tired of my sick mind" laments Otis in its opening bars, the track embodies an ethereal yet rock n roll groove not dissimilar from much-adored coming-of-age soundtracks.

From Royel’s time spent in New York, to the old Japanese ‘city-pop’ like Hiroshi Sato and the legends Jonathan Richmond, The Strokes and Daft Punk, Royel Otis find their inspiration in the most intriguing of places. This melting pot of sonics form who the band are at their essence, Royel explains, “We want to create a sound that holds the same raw, honest, evocative feeling that inspired us to pick up our instruments in the first place.” Their sunny yet scorchingly lovesick single, ‘Without U’, closely followed. Playing on this delicious juxtaposition to form the perfect, summer-ready indie pop song, the accompanying video sees the duo in lo-fi, with the wind in their hair, jamming in the blazing Aussie sun. In their own inimitable words: “Without U is the yearning for that spesh person whilst cruising down the coast in the back of a convertible, grilling some grub on a George Foreman grill and cooling some cold ones. The wind’s in your hair and the sun’s going down on the horizon but what’s the point in having fun without a loved one?”

Royel Otis is the brainchild of self-proclaimed “young scoundrels” Otis Pavlovic and Royel Maddell. Friends and kindred spirits born on the sun-drenched coastline of Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach, this unique and idyllic way of life naturally influences their sound. The magnetic pair recently signed to notorious imprints House Anxiety / Ourness, who between them introduced the world to King Krule, Genesis Owusu and Courtney Barnett. With Royel Otis’ first project unleashed into the world, the world is their oyster.
