Angelique Kidjo Brings Her Radical Reimagining of Talking Heads' 'Remain In Light' to Central Park Summerstage Sept 27

Angelique Kidjo Brings Her Radical Reimagining of Talking Heads' 'Remain In Light' to Central Park Summerstage Sept 27

CD VERSION OF ‘REMAIN IN LIGHT’ TO BE RELEASED SEPT 28 (KRAVENWORKS RECORDS)
Angélique Kidjo set the music world on fire in June with her track-by-track reimagination of Talking Heads’ landmark album ‘Remain in Light.’ Now Angelique and her full band will perform her ecstatic version of this album at home in NYC, September 27 at Central Park’s SummerStage. Opening is the Resistance Revival Chorus, who also performed with Kidjo at the Women’s March on Washington. SummerStage is the latest stop on an international 2018 tour that continues through the year and has included performances in Los Angeles, London, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Her version of ‘Remain In Light’ will also be released via CD format on September 28 (Kravenworks Records).
Angélique has had an incredible summer - she performed “Once in a Lifetime” on Jimmy Kimmel Live in May, discussed the album with David Byrne on the New Yorker Radio Hour, has been featured on NPR Morning Edition, NPR Music First Listen, Pitchfork, LA Times, Studio 360, Questlove Supreme, PRI’s The World and more.
Angélique partnered with super producer and 2015 Grammy Producer of the Year Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Rolling Stones, Beyonce) for her version of ‘Remain in Light,’ which brings the landmark 1980 album by Talking Heads full circle, back to the sounds of West Africa that inspired the original. It includes appearances by Ezra Koenig, Blood Orange, Fela Kuti drummer Tony Allen, the Antibalas horns, Angelique’s longtime guitarist Dominic James, and Magatte Sow (percussionist for the ‘Black Panther’ film score). Visual artist Kerry James Marshall created the album artwork.

Iron & Wine’s Weed Garden is available today worldwide from Sub Pop + EP now streaming

Iron & Wine’s Weed Garden is available today worldwide from Sub Pop

Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2wrbKTm
Apple Music: https://u.subpop.com/2vNk93h

North American fall tour dates September 21st-November 17th with support from Erin Rae, Ohmme, and Carl Broemel

Iron & Wine’s Weed Garden arrives as a six-song collection of all new material, whose roots were planted during the making of last years Grammy-nominated, Beast Epic.  The release is being made available worldwide from Sub Pop and joins the ranks of his previous EP’s -The Sea and RhythmWoman King and In the Reins which contains some of Iron & Wine’s most beloved material.

Recorded earlier this year at The Loft in Chicago, Weed Garden features the single “What Hurts Worse” and the fan favorite, “Waves of Galveston,” which first appeared as part of The Onion’s AV Club “State Songs” and is finally making its official release. Galveston is just a short trip from Austin where Sam Beam lived for a number years, and its coastal beauty is brought to life in this late summer breezy acoustic number that harkens back to some of Iron & Wine's earliest material.

Beam recently stated that “‘Waves of Galveston” was one of those songs that had a more reflective feel and I knew I wanted to do it as an acoustic thing.  I guess it pointed me in the direction of where the rest of Beast Epic went.” He also touched on the EP format and noted that he "really like(s) short records. The more concise the better. Anytime you have fewer things to absorb you observe and listen to it differently. It’s a concentrated statement”.

The Associated Press had this say of Weed Garden, “Beam’s surprise gift is the exquisite “Waves of Galveston,” a fan favorite getting its first official release. Its very 70’s-sounding refrain caresses the eardrums and Nick Drake may have sounded like this if singing about Texas….There are plenty of references to nature — the sea, butterflies, serpents, rain, clouds, flowers, winds and waves — but it’s all related to the human experience and the final three songs sustain the theme. Especially affecting are the gorgeous “Autumn Town Leaves” and the increasingly intense and desperate closer “Talking to Fog.” Weed Garden is both a wonderful bonus in relation to Beast Epicand an enchanting collection that deserves to be valued for its own plentiful merits.”

And NPR Music offers this, “Not only is Weed Garden a consistently powerful extension of Beast Epic, but it also marks the first studio release of one of Beam's live staples: "Waves of Galveston." That outtake has been cropping up in performances...but it benefits enormously from a new full-band arrangement that's crisp and lovely, spare but sweet.”

Weed Garden is available on CD/LP/DL/CS through Sub Pop [link here]. LP purchases through megamart.subpop.com and select independent retailers will receive the limited Loser edition on Amber colored vinyl (while supplies last)

Editions Mego: Klara Lewis & Simon Fisher Turner' s collaborative debut, Care [Release: 10/5]

Editions Mego has announced the October 5th release of Klara Lewis and Simon Fisher Turner’s Care. The set will be released as a single-LP.

Care is the first outing from the legendary English musician, songwriter, composer, and producer Simon Fisher Turner and the highly-acclaimed, emerging Swedish sound artist, Klara Lewis.
This collaborative debut is a unique outing rife with delicious dichotomy. The opening track, “8”, positions the aggressive directly against more fragile moments. On the subsequent track, “Drone”, medieval melodies sprout from a dense rhythmic hiss. Witness a Middle Eastern song appearing amongst a haunted rattling reverb in the epic "Tank", whilst a beautiful force of hope can be found within the sound world of closing track "Mend".
The wide scope of references and constant pull of forces make this debut offering a timeless patchwork of sonic spaces. Care is an album which sways in such a salubrious manner one can't help but delight in its unique form of location/disorientation.

Anna Calvi Shares Videos For "Hunter" & "As A Man;" LP Out This Friday, 8/31

Today, Anna Calvi shares two new videos - a film for her current single "Hunter" and a performance video for a brand new track, "As A Man" - both taken from her much anticipated upcoming album, Hunter, due for release tomorrow, August 31st, 2018, via Domino. Both were directed by the Berlin-based filmmaker and photographer, Matt Lambert, much of whose work explores queer love and intimacy.

In the track "Hunter", Calvi celebrates the transcendent aspects of pleasure and finding a community and home in queer spaces. According to Calvi, it is about "exploring a more subversive sexuality, which goes further than what is expected of a woman in our patriarchal heteronormative society." The film for "Hunter", which was premiered via Dazed (here), was a chance to follow an ongoing theme of creating honest and authentic portrayals of intimacy. Lambert said the following: "The ritual of self-love and body-exploration for many queer individuals is the first step toward feeling confident intimate moments with others".

About the track "As A Man", Calvi said the following: "If a woman wants to be powerful she's expected to exhibit 'male' traits. The woman in the song is trying to understand a man by imagining becoming him, but as it progresses she asks the man to become more like her instead. There's been a lot of encouragement for women to become more like men if they want to get their voices heard, or be powerful. But there hasn't been enough effort to get men to become more like women. Men are brought up believing that to be feminine is to be weak. If there is to be equality, both sexes need to be able to move to the middle of the spectrum. This song is about finding freedom in the non-binary world."

"As A Man" (audio) is available to stream and share via all digital service providersHERE
Anna Calvi - Hunter (Official Video) (Explicit)

Produced by Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Grinderman) at Konk Studios in London with some further production in LA, Hunter was recorded with Anna's band - Mally Harpaz on various instruments and Alex Thomas on drums - with the addition of Adrian Utley from Portishead on keys and Martyn Casey from The Bad Seeds on bass. It has a new rawness, a primal energy into which Calvi pushes the limits of her guitar and voice beyond anything she's recorded before.

Hunter is available this Friday on DIG, CD, LP, via all DSPs and on limited edition deluxe LP 180g red vinyl with exclusive signed print, encased in a high gloss gatefold sleeve with download code. To pre-order click here.

NPR's All Songs Considered features Gaelynn Lea's Track "The Last Three Feet"

ICYMI: NPR's All Songs Considered features Gaelynn Lea's Track "The Last Three Feet"

"Our 2016 Tiny Desk Contest winner Gaelynn Lea says she came up with this track after a Foreign Services Officer challenged her to write a song about the "last three feet" in diplomacy – a reference to the hardest part of international exchange, one that requires face-to-face, personal contact. Lea says she'd also been hurt a year earlier by a friend and hadn't made peace with it. So, contemplating the song idea, she says, "really helped clarify a lot for me. You have to be willing to recognize not only how you've been wounded but where you too were wrong." NPR/All Songs Considered

New Record Learning How To Say
Out Sept 7
"Gaelynn Lea has been described as a 'haunting' violinist and songwriter. Her new album, Learning How to Stay, is the very definition of the word - poignant and evocative; difficult to ignore or forget. From the beautiful simplicity of 'Bound by a Thread' to the complicated pop sensibilities of 'Lost in the Woods,' Gaelynn had me captivated from the very first musical moment."
- Jeremy Harvey, Drummer for Cloud Cult

"A battle-cry for love in all its forms... This joyful, energizing album is a treat!"
- Maria Bamford, Comedian
About:
When Gaelynn Lea won NPR Music’s 2016 Tiny Desk Contest, her two decades as a hardworking and talented musician finally crystallized in a beautiful moment of national recognition. It was also just the beginning of a grand adventure. With the wind of her award at their backs, Gaelynn and her husband Paul sold their house in Northern Minnesota, quit their jobs, bought a van, and hit the road.

Since then, Gaelynn has played over 250 shows in 42 states and seven countries, adding nearly 100,000 miles to their Ford Econoline’s odometer. The singer-songwriter and violinist has performed everywhere from coffee shops, bars, schools and festivals; she’s graced the stage of renowned venues like Nashville’s Music City RootsThe Kennedy Center, House of Blues and even BBC World News. This June she was featured at arts festivals in Iceland and Switzerland, and she played the Winnipeg Folk Fest in July and Travelers' Rest Fest (curated by The Decemberists) in August.

Yet somehow between this perpetual blitz of performances, Gaelynn also recorded her third full-length album set for release in September. Until this point Gaelynn Lea has presented most of her songs using only a few tools: a violin, a voice, and a looping pedal. But for her latest, Gaelynn Lea enlisted the help of some musical friends to bring her new album to life. Several of Minnesota’s heavy-hitters—including Al Church, Dave Mehling, Marty Dosh, Andrew Foreman and Alan Sparhawk—lent their creative influence and musicality to this recording. The result is a powerfully emotive effort of confidence and purpose which captures the poignancy and presence of Gaelynn Lea’s crafted repertoire.

Her forthcoming album, Learning How To Stay, is an 11-song collection that runs the gamut sonically from pensive and luscious to aggressive and intentioned, from folk to decidedly pop, and even includes a couple of traditional fiddle tunes. Undoubtedly the connecting thread of this album is Gaelynn Lea herself. With her singular voice and deeply-affecting violin, she guides the listener through a journey that explores the contrasting nature of existence: dark and light, birth and death, anger and forgiveness, sorrow and joy. Learning How to Stay encourages the listener to stay present for it all.

In addition to performing and recording, Gaelynn Lea loves to do speaking engagements about disability awareness, inclusion in the arts, and leading an enriching life. Gaelynn has a disability called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bones Disease) and she is a strong voice in the disability community. Gaelynn Lea believes society must prioritize accessibility so people with disabilities can participate in their communities and use their gifts without barriers or discrimination.
