En Orbita Fest 7/15 @ LPR (Os Mutantes/Martin Rev/Lee Ranaldo)

Os Mutantes, Lee Ranaldo, Yonatan Gat, A Place To Bury Strangers & More Play En Orbita Festival At Le Poisson Rouge (New Location) On 7/15

Festival Also Features Panels & Exhibitions Curated In Collaboration With The MIT Media Lab Space Exploration Initiative
En Orbita was always intended to be a dialogue between science and music- an expression of how music connects across spaces, cultures... and potentially dimensions.

July 15 in NYC marks the third-ever edition of the festival, with a lineup for the ages. The festival will see performances from none other than the godparents of Latin American Psychedelia, Os Mutantes. Also sharing sounds is the outstanding and recently buzz-heavy Yonatan Gat- the former member of Israeli garage rock outfit Monotonix who recently has been captivating international audiences with his brand of spiritual noise (take a listen, you'll get it). Martin Rev from the legendary band Suicide will grace the space. A Place To Bury Strangers represents New York with their cerebral post-punk and Boston-based Chilean band Breaking Forms blesses the stage with what's been dubbed Bubbly Space PopTres Warren from the band Psychic Ills is releasing a new project with Berlin based,  chilean architect and artist, Alfredo  Thiermann called "Land In Sky". The record was published by the label Sacred Bones

Alongside a quite otherworldly lineup, the festival will also include talks and exhibits, featuring the performing artists

Nicole L'Huillier and Xin Liu, of the group Space Exploration Initiative from MIT Media Lab, will be presenting the work they have done which explores the connections between sound and vision, as well as what human expression means in outer space. Telemetron, Orbit Weaver, and Teserrae are the three projects exhibit during En Orbita, all three of them created with the intention of exploring living systems for humans in outer space.

The main topic of the talks will be: creativity, why we do the things that we do, like the panel:

"Creating back then, creating now", presented by Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Sergio Dias (Os Mutantes) and Martin Rev (Suicide)

Or the conversation about the Telemetron: a music instrument built to be used in space or in zero gravity, with Oliver Ackermann (founder of A Place To Bury Strangers and the effects pedal company Death by Audio) and Lee Ranaldo discovering its uses and how it works.

A Little En Orbita History

En Orbita has had two wildly successful versions so far, both in its hometown Santiago, Chile. It's managed to bring in amazing international acts like Cigarettes After Sex, Los Mirlos, The Sonics, Damo Suzuki, Lee Ranaldo, Parquet Courts, Holy Wave, Juana Molina, as well as showcase local Chilean gems like Miss Garrison and Protistas (among many others).

It's had insightful talks from multi-disciplinary speakers ranging from Ian Svenonius (of the band The Make-Up) to Sean Bohrman, head of Burger Records to Sergio Diaz, cofounder of Os Mutantes to Public Image ltd. (among other bands), drummer and current speaker, academic and writer Martin Atkins.

En Orbita approaches the ever-changing music industry and its place in our universe with brutal honesty and celestial optimism- looking to confront the challenges it faces while simultaneously daydreaming up solutions and reminding us why we're all here in the first place- the music. As founder Carmen Barahona says, "it's the first step for a dialogue we want to open in the world."

About The MIT Media Lab Space Exploration Initiative

The Media Lab Space Exploration Initiative was created during the 2016-2017 school year. The initiative has since grown from grassroots student interest to a team of over 50 students, faculty, and staff actively prototyping our open-access, space-hacking future. The initiative supports 20+ research projects (from satellite constellation algorithms to astrobiology). Examples include The Telemetron (a unique mode of musical performance that takes advantage of the poetics of zero gravity) and the Orbit Weaver (Orbit Weaver is a series of imaginative interactions with moving bodies in zero gravity)- both of which will be on display on July 13 (location TBA)
