"Minus is astonishing... Both stunning and original" – **** Q
"Introspective explosion…recalls Talk Talk's Laughing Stock and Neil Young's 'Ditch Trilogy'" –8/10 Uncut
Daniel Blumberg will release
Minus, his debut album and the first release under his own name, on
May 4 via
Mute. An astonishing work, the record weds an improvisational, free-music ethos to the rawest emotional songwriting.
The 13-minute epic “Madder” is the record’s center point and brings in and out of focus both the euphoric melodies and songcraft as well as the abstract and improvised. Written on the island of Sanday off the north coast of Scotland, “Madder” was tracked in Wales with strings by Ute Kanngiesser added in London. Listen

Blumberg explains,
“’Madder’ is the blueprint of the album, lyrically and musically and is the most extreme song on the record both melodically and dynamically. You can hear the interplay between the musicians really clearly: me, Billy Steiger, Tom Wheatley and Jim White. They each have such unique voices and this shows the exceptional range of dynamics they have as individual players, as well as what happens when those voices combine in the same room.”Preorder

Minus was recorded with legendary producer Peter Walsh (Scott Walker’s collaborator since
Climate Of Hunter), violinist Billy Steiger, double bassist Tom Wheatley, and revered drummer Jim White (Dirty Three, Xylouris White).

Blumberg has spent much of the last five years working solely within the radical community of musicians centered around London’s Café OTO, releasing music as GUO with Seymour Wright and performing with Neil Hagerty’s The Howling Hex.
On
Minus, there is a sense that he has finally arrived at the place he has been searching for. The album is an arresting and progressive work, one that is set to establish him as one of Britain’s most unique contemporary voices.
Daniel Blumberg will support the album release with a series of live dates including a show at Rough Trade East and a residency at Café OTO. Steiger and Wheatley will perform alongside Blumberg, and Jim White will join on select dates. Further dates to be announced.
