Watch TOY's new video for It's Been So Long
Dir. Douglas Hart
Fresh off their debut North American tour TOY unfurl the new video for It's Been So Long, taken from their second album Join The Dots released early this year on Heavenly Recordings and directed by Jesus And Mary Chain's Douglas Hart.
"The video for TOY's It's Been So Long features calibration charts used for everything from testing focus on microscopes and optical movie projectors to the calibration of cathode rays and the accuracy of the US Army Air Force's bomb and gun sights. The video also includes colour reference charts which instruct technicians as to the true nature of black, white and the three primary colours which combine and overlap within optical devices to create every imaginable colour and shade. Often these charts include strange symbols mapped out in mysterious lines, spirals, and solid shapes, some of which look like they belong on the pages of a New Orleans Voodoo curse, or on an Op Art canvas." - Douglas Hart
TOY are: Tom Dougall (vocals / guitar), Dominic O'Dair (guitars), Maxim Barron (bass / vocals),Alejandra Diez (synths / modulations) & Charlie Salvidge (drums / vocals).

Boston-based singer Marissa Nadler is streaming her new full-length album, July, this week, exclusively at NPR First Listen. The album, set for release February 4th on Sacred Bones (US) and February 10th on Bella Union (ROW), will be celebrated with a special performance in Brooklyn onSaturday, February 8th at Glasslands. After being one of the first artists to perform at Rough Trade's new Brooklyn space this past November, Nadler is embarking on a national tour behind July.Dates below.
Recorded at Seattle's Avast Studio, the album pairs Nadler for the first time with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves in the Throne Room). Dunn matches Nadler's darkness by creating a multi-colored sonic palette that infuses new dimensions into her songs. Eyvind Kang's strings, Steve Moore's synths, and Phil Wandscher's guitar lines escalate the whole affair to a panoramic level of beautiful, eerie wonder.
July follows Nadler's critically acclaimed 2011 self-titled LP, which she released independently through a successful Kickstarter campaign, selling her own handmade albums (as well as a highly-circulated 'Covers' series) through Etsy. Following several albums on Kemado, her DIY venture earned her SPIN 'Best New Artist,' Vogue 'Artist To Watch,' KEXP, NPR 'World Cafe: Next,'and NPR 'First Listen' accolades, while Pitchfork gave it an "Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention."
Recently collaborating with Angel Olsen and Xasthur, among others, July is the kind of release that reminds you why NPR counts Nadler's songwriting as so "revered among an assortment of tastemakers." This is a singular achievement for the artist, a record she couldn't have made earlier in her career because, as every songwriter knows, she didn't just write these songs: She lived them.

Agnes Obel Announces North American Tour
Danish Artist Agnes Obel Announces North American Tour
"Absolutely sublime" - KCRW
"Repeated listens unfurl all sorts of wonder." **** Q
"In surpassing her debut, Agnes Obel has confirmed she is in it for the long haul." **** MOJO
Danish singer/songwriter Agnes Obel has announced a North American tour behind her sophomore album, Aventine, out now on Play It Again Sam/[PIAS] America. Performing as a trio, with Agnes on piano, accompanied by Anne Müller and Mika Posen (Timber Timbre) on cello and viola respectively, watch the live video for 'Dorian' to see what's in store on this tour. The video comes from a series recorded in Berlin at Hemathefen Neukölln, which also featured 'The Curse,' originally revealed by KCRW.
Rapturously received by critics across Europe, Aventine entered the Top 5 album chart in four countries, reaching No.1 in her native Denmark and No.2 in France. Notable supporters here in the US include KCRW, Mother Jones, and long-running nationally syndicated radio program, Echoes.Aventine, which has already gone platinum in France, follows Agnes's 2010 debut, Philharmonics, which received a gold award in Holland, platinum awards in Belgium and France, and went quintuple platinum in her native state of Denmark, where Agnes won five Danish Music Awards (the Danish Brits) in 2011. Agnes was also recently invited to perform for the French President, Francois Hollande, at Radio France Inter's 50th Anniversary celebrations.
All of the songs on Aventine were written (music and lyrics), recorded, produced and arranged by Agnes Obel roughly from the beginning of 2012 until late spring 2013, at home in Berlin and in a rented drum studio in the Kreuzberg district.

MAC DEMARCO ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM & TOUR DATES
SHARES FIRST SINGLE "PASSING OUT PIECES"
SALAD DAYS DUE APRIL 1 VIA CAPTURED TRACKS
|
"As I'm getting older, chip up on my shoulder..." is the opening line from Mac DeMarco's second full-length LP Salad Days, the follow up to 2012's lauded Mac DeMarco 2. Amongst that familiar croon and lilting guitar, that initial line from the title track sets the tone for an LP of a maturing singer/songwriter/producer. Someone strangely self-aware of the positives and negatives of their current situation at the ripe old age of 23.
Written and recorded around a relentless touring schedule, Salad Days gives the listener a very personal insight into what it's all about to be Mac amidst the craziness of a rising career in a very public format. The lead single, "Passing Out Pieces," set to huge overdriven organ chords, contains lines like "...never been reluctant to share, passing out pieces of me..." Clearly, this isn't the same record that breezily gave us "Dreamin" and "Ode to Viceroy," but the result of what comes from their success. "Chamber of Reflection," a track featuring icy synth stabs and soulful crooning, wouldn't be out of place on a fantasy Shuggie Otis and Prince collaboration. Standout tracks like these show Mac's widening sound, whether insights into future directions or even just welcome one-off forays into new territory. Still, this is musically, lyrically and melodically good old Mac DeMarco, through and through. The crisp John Lennon/Phil Spector era homegrown lush production that could have come off Geoff Emerick's mixing board in 1972 with that peculiar Mac touch that's completely right now is still present. "Brother," a complete future classic, is Mac at his most soulful and easygoing but with that distinct weirdness and bite that can only come from Mr. DeMarco. "Treat Her Better" is rife with Mac-isms, heavily chorused slinky lead guitar, swooning vocal melodies, effortless chords that come along only after years of effort, and the other elements seriously lacking in independent music: sentiment and heartfelt sincerity. We're only in Part 2 1/2 (one EP and two LP's in) of Mac's career. As you read this and as you hear the album on April Fool's Day of this year, he'll probably be on tour, or preparing for one... or maybe already writing new music. A relentless work ethic is something to be admired in today's indie music scene, but when it's of the quality Mac is giving us time and time again, it starts to turn from admiration to awe.

‘Holy City’ is the new album’s prime Motown/Hi label-influenced pop fusion, a brilliantly instinctive lead single inspired by a visit to Jerusalem’s Wailing Wall and understanding people find ecstasy in different ways, from praying to making music. The track’s atmospheric closing scat-rap is from Reggie Watts: “he’s an incredibly inspired musician as well as being a comedic genius,” ventures Joan, “he challenges you to think much deeper but in a way that’s subtle, plus he’s so comfortable, natural and sensual in his body... I contacted him through mutual friends, and a week later, he was recording on my record with the freedom to do what he wanted. It felt very magical.”
‘Holy City’ is available digitally now but is also released on 7" vinyl as a AA-side single with the album's title track, ‘The Classic’ on 17th Feb
The Classic, the fourth album of originals by the uniquely charismatic artist known as Joan As Police Woman, builds on the creative impetus and success of its 2011 predecessor The Deep Field. As ever Joan strives to create music rooted in an intimate, elemental and uplifting brand of soul combined with her own unique serene, torch-singing temperament, but whereas melancholy was a principle feature of Joan’s earlier work, this time there’s a more liberated feel than ever before.
Famously a key member of Antony Hegarty’s Johnsons and Rufus Wainwright’s band until she began making her own records, Joan was inspired by their combined piano balladry while infusing it with her own stripped-down-soul and torch-song approach. Her 2006 album debut Real Life was followed by To Survive (2008), written in the aftermath of her mother’s death; in 2009, she released an interim covers album simply called Cover, before The Deep Field confirmed Joan had started a full recovery and was determined to beat the blues. Which takes us to The Classic, where Joan reaches even further toward the light.
A UK tour has been confirmed for April/May, plus two low-key shows in March. The Lexington show, announced to fans via Joan's Facebook page, sold out in a matter of minutes. Tickets for all the other shows on sale now:
