Brooklyn-based dream rock outfit Ok Cowgirl share their highly anticipated debut EP, Not My First Rodeo. After gigging around New York City for years, building a name, reputation, and sizable following, the quartet is here to share their first record full of raw, vulnerable, and honest lyrics backed by scuzzy guitars and atmospheric synths.
Atwood Magazine featured the EP alongside an in depth track-by-track from the band, in addition to naming Ok Cowgirl as one of the artists to watch in 2022. Atwood writes, "Ok Cowgirl pack a wealth of lived experience, emotion, and passion into these five songs, resulting in a record that is as catchy as it is cathartic and as intimate as it is intense. Whether you’re in it for the rock riffs or the raw reckonings, this EP is sure to provide endless entertainment all winter long – and it’s certainly earned Ok Cowgirl a space as one of Atwood Magazine‘s 2022 artists to watch."Not My First Rodeo is a collection of self-reflective and raw stories. Earworm melodies, elements of shoegaze, folk, and rock all intermingle effortlessly in the unique sonic world of Ok Cowgirl. Songwriter and frontwoman Leah Lavigne lets you in on her personal frustrations and ponderings, and it is as intense as it is intimate. Noise/feedback, gripping guitar tones, and pounding drums trade off with sparser sections where basslines weave around vocal melodies swimming in atmospheric synths. The title of the EP, Not My First Rodeo, is a cheeky nod to the group’s previous personal and musical journeys. An honest offering, Ok Cowgirl’s debut EP demonstrates a sophisticated sense of self only achievable by a cohesive and experienced group of musical collaborators. The tracks, ranging from the ecstatic agony of one's first all-consuming queer crush ("Her Eyes") to groundshattering breakups ("Roadtrip (Till the End of Time)), Not My First Rodeo sees Lavigne move through life: an intimate, honest, and sometimes painfully self-aware look at growing up through your early 20s. Lavigne manages to pack an equal amount of longing, musings, and catharsis into her lyrics, uplifted by her soaring vocals and backed by emotive electric guitar.
Not My First Rodeo invites you into Ok Cowgirl's world, to embrace vulnerability and unabashedly feel everything. Stream the EP on any DSP now.
Catch the band at Knitting Factory on December 15th, where they will be playing a release show with Spud Cannon and May Rio. |
