According to two economic impact reports compiled by Another Planet, the concert promoter behind the festival, Outside Lands generated $66.8 million in new economic activity for the city in 2017, and created the equivalent of 700 full-time year long jobs across the greater Bay Area. In 2011, the festival generated $60 million in economic activity and 756 Bay Area jobs.
The two reports rely on surveys conducted among concert-goers in which respondents are asked about their place of residence, spending habits and other behavioral patterns that can inform how the festival impacts the local economy.
Even though the economic impact reports are conducted by the concert promoter itself, the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department backs the reports' findings and methodology. The department also added that since the festival's inception, the department has raised over $27 million in funds that have been used to pay for frequent restoration of festival grounds in Golden Gate Park and a full-time, year-round gardener for the Polo Field.
Even though the 2021 festival is being conducted two months later than its normal August date and against the backdrop of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (though attendees must show proof of vaccination or a negative test), the parks department and concert promoters expect that the concert will generate $71.3 million in new economic activity — which is in line with the 2017 figures, adjusted for inflation.
