Only BUST Magazine could pull off a party of this magnitude.
Maintaining a decades-long tradition of not only inspiring women with intelligent and provocative content, but also mainstreaming feminism, the iconoclastic independent publication is now revealing details for its 25th Anniversary Extravaganza. This collective of female thought leaders—spearheaded by co-founders Debbie Stoller and Laurie Henzel—takes over House of Yes in New York City on Tuesday, August 28, to commemorate the milestone. After presenting the first “Golden Bra Awards” in 2013 at their 20th Anniversary event, the ladies will honor women they admire, including GRAMMY® Award-winning, neo-soul legend Erykah Badu, feminist comedienne Phoebe Robinson and more, with coveted “Golden Bra Awards” at this year’s party as well!
Quite fittingly, the evening boasts a full-blown “feminist variety show” hosted by Jenny Slate, featuring a DJ set by Badu, performances by all-female rock outfit Sharkmuffin, The Resistance Revival Choris, Kembra Pfahler and the Girls of Karen Black and Brooklyn rapper Miss Eaves, standup from Phoebe Robinson (2 Dope Queens), Michelle Buteau, Patti Harrison and other groundbreaking comedians, an appearance by Amber Tamblyn, secret guests and spirits. It’s as if the pages of BUST came to life on stage.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s been 25 years,” says Henzel. “We’re very proud, happy, and kind of amazed to be here. Even though we’re a small independent magazine, we’ve built the most supportive audience. It’s incredible to be a part of advancing feminism together.”
“It feels like the culture has finally caught up to us,” adds Stoller. “There was a time when celebrities received a backlash for embracing feminism—but these days, it’s the other way around. It’s been exciting to see pop culture, the media, and young women embrace the term—and we’re thrilled to have played a role in that. And given the current political climate, our voices are more necessary than ever. It’s just an honor to still have a platform.”
Back when feminism was a dirty word even the edgiest starlets didn’t dare utter, BUST proudly waved the flag for it. Launched in 1993 by Stoller and Henzel and operated independently as a bimonthly voice since, the publication has fiercely clung to its ideals from day one. It would be among the first women’s magazines to openly endorse feminism, explore and promote women’s pleasure by writing candidly about vibrators and sex toys, feature plus-size and transgender models, touthandmade crafts as part of women’s legacy, and promote feminist-friendly entertainment. Classic cover stars have included Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Solange Knowles, Cher, and others, while the magazine has been featured on The Tonight Show, Ellen, and more.
