Jake Bellows had quit music. Or so he thought.
After fronting Neva Dinova for more than 15 years, which included five full-lengths, a split EP, and countless tours, he packed up his dog and moved from his native Omaha to his girlfriend's hometown of Los Angeles. Two days before he left he recorded 18 demos with musician and engineer Ben Brodin at his insistence. Once in L.A., Bellows got a job installing sliding-glass doors and sold his Les Paul to buy a Datsun pick-up truck.
Though he had no plans to form a new band, he played the occasional solo show, performed with Whispertown, and continued to write songs. In early 2011, an invitation arrived from Omaha's Film Streams Theater for Jake's old friend Ryan Fox also living on the West Coast, to perform an original live film-score. Fox enlisted Bellows and Brodin to collaborate and the trio began to compose and discuss improvisational ideas over long-distance. Since they were all going to be in Omaha and had a long history of playing in each other's bands, Brodin and Fox nudged Bellows into booking studio time to record some of his dormant songs.
Fox and Bellows drove from LA to Omaha that November. They entered ARC Studios for a feverish recording session, arranging and writing parts on the fly with an impromptu band including Heath Koontz, Todd Fink, Whispertown bandmate Morgan Nagler and other old friends. Committing quickly to intuitive arrangements the band recorded 17 tracks in a little more than a week. They worked remotely on the record throughout that winter and spring, adding overdubs in basements and bedrooms across western North America.
The new music is underpinned by philosophical conviction and shaped by an interest in physics, cosmology and mythology. Bellows returned to music with a renewed sense of the intrinsic value of art and its ability to express the commonality of human experience. His debut full-length, New Ocean, offers a mix tape of different kinds of songs hanging out on one record - love songs that are not necessarily ballads despite their introspective gauziness, with left turns into drunk-in-the-sun bossa nova and blue-eyed-soul ruptured by fuzz guitar. Bellows believes that songs change the fabric of the universe through the very frequencies they emit. As such, the record attempts to create the world he wants to see instead of reflect the world that is.

STREAM PARQUET COURTS' NEW EP, "TALLY ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU BROKE", OUT 10/8 ON WHAT'S YOUR RUPTURE?
RADIO STATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY GIVE LISTENERS AN EARLY TASTE THIS WEEK
RECORD RELEASE SHOW AT MUSIC HALL OF WILLIAMSBURG TONIGHT!
Parquet Courts' new EP, "Tally All The Things That You Broke," is officially out next week (Oct 8th on What's Your Rupture?). As in, for sale in record stores, available for purchase online, gettin' hocked at pawnshops, being pirated online, gettin' added to mixtapes, and being played for newborn babies, ya know, to improve their ever-developing brains. Well, far be it from us to allow all the consumers to enter the marketplace uninformed. That's why we're sharing the entire new EP with audiences early. I KNOW, I KNOW, you're thinking "are you INSANE? Just GIVING it away like that? It's NEVER been done BEFORE." First off, stop inflecting your sentences with all caps, it's annoying and inappropriate. Also, we're pretty sure a few folks have done this in the past. Well, maybe not exactly like this. Today, the EP is streaming in full on www.parkayquarts.com, but earlier this week, five marquee American radio stations premiered the record on the airwaves. KEXP in Seattle,WXRT in Chicago, CD102.5 in Columbus, KVRX in Austin, and WXPN in Philadelphia all played the entire EP on Monday and Tuesday. Now we're gettin' into uncharted waters, so permission to freak out granted.

Also, don't forget that any record is, or at least should be, a righteous representation of the live band, and Parquet Courts pride themselves as a hard working one, first and foremost. So with that said, Parquet Courts' record release show is TONIGHT at Music Hall of Williamsburg. This is their biggest hometown headlining date, and they're pulling out all the non-existent stops for this one. Be prepared to hear stuff off their instant classic, Light Up Gold, tracks off the new EP, and even new songs slated for the next LP. Stops, OUT; leaving everything on the field; IN. After that, the boys take off for two weekends at the Austin City Limits festival before waving "ta-ta" to the US for a month and crossing the ocean for more dates abroad. So for us Americans, the time is now; the show is tonight; the band is Parquet Courts.
PARQUET COURTS DATES:
Wed. Oct. 2 - Brooklyn, NY @ Music Hall of Williamsburg w/ The Beets, The Yuppies, Future Punx
Sat. Oct. 5 - Austin, TX @ Austin City Limits Festival (Barton Springs Stage)
Sat. Oct. 12 - Austin, TX @ Austin City Limits Festival (Barton Springs Stage)

BRIANNA LEA PRUETT'S GYPSY BELLS
BRIANNA LEA PRUETT'S GYPSY BELLS OUT TODAY VIA CANYON RECORDS
PASTE PREMIERES GYPSY BELLS ALBUM STREAM
"Brianna
Lea Pruett's sweet vocals and vivid lyrics are continuing to garner
more attention in anticipation of the forthcoming release of Gypsy
Bells" - PASTE
Today, Canyon Records releases the "breathtaking folk" and "quiet bucolic beauty" of Brianna Lea Pruett's stunning collection of songs that form her debut Gypsy Bells. Paste Magazine continues to champion Pruett by premiering the entirety of Gypsy Bells yesterday saying "Brianna Lea Pruett has captivated us with her sweet vocals and rustic lyrics."
Gypsy Bells is
as informed by Pruett's Cherokee and Choctaw heritage as it is her
parent's vinyl collection, with influences ranging from Leonard Cohen
and Emmylou Harris to Pruett's personal discoveries of Mazzy Star and
Neko Case. Gypsy Bells cuts
to the quick within the simplicity and poignant themes across the range
of the album seeming juxtaposed to the richness of Pruett's Native
American heritage and her California folk traditions.

The Limiñanas To Release Costa Blanca Nov. 19
THE LIMIÑANAS TO RELEASE COSTA BLANCA NOVEMBER 19TH ON TROUBLE IN MIND
STREAM/SHARE THE LIMIÑANAS' "MY BLACK SABBATH"
The Limiñanas, the brainchild of French duo Lio and Marie Limiñana, are back on Trouble In Mind with their third album, Costa Blanca, out November 19th! Once again, recorded at their home in the south of France by Lio himself, Costa Blanca pushes the envelope of their signature Franc-o-phonic sound -- the
coloeur café cool of Gainsbourg, the hypnotic drone of VU-era Cale, and
the spiky fuzz of Davie Allan. This time around the band incorporate
avant-classical and experimental sonic elements, lacing the tunes with
a dramatic flair of French New Wave soundtracks and the percussive
accents found in Morricone's work in Il Gruppo. Melodic "jump-cuts,"
sonic echoes of previous tunes and future melodies, appear and
disappear throughout the course of this album (and The Limiñanas'
entire oeuvre). Thematically, Costa Blanca is
an insular record, with subjects that reference Lio's youth growing up
in Spain in the 1970's near the Mediterranean Sea and nostalgic odes to
the music, films, girls, books and cars that shaped his world.
STREAM/SHARE THE LIMIÑANAS' "MY BLACK SABBATH" -
"Marie and Lio Limiñana are making something new with the echoes
of France's artistic past. . . Marie's airy vocals add that retro
element to the modern soundscape, which even features glimmers of
Mediterranean melodies. The driving bassline also has a throwback vibe,
but its place within the production and combination with the rest of
the instrumentation gives it a twenty-first-century flavor. The
Limiñanas know how to make established styles sound new again." - Ad Hoc

Sebadoh performs in New York on November 1st
Sebadoh's first LP in 14 years, Defend Yourself, is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings and is streaming in its entirety at Bandcamp!
Fans can catch them live at the Bowery Ballroom on November 1st.
WHAT THE PRESS IS SAYING ABOUT DEFEND YOURSELF:
"Even
as Barlow offers up clear-eyed postmortems of a wrecked marriage,
Defend Yourself exudes the live-wire energy of a vital band
brought back from the brink." NPR
"A private project became a public one, and this is its legitimate new chapter."
The New York Times
The New York Times
"...great, gritty new songs and refreshing upgrades to their idiosyncratic aesthetic." Exclaim!
"Fuck yeah, we still need indie-rock bands!" SPIN
"So,
yeah, it’s not surprising that a band has changed after 14 years
without a record, but the changes here, the subtlety of them, are
bracing and make Defend Yourself not just a welcome return, but a shot
in the arm for the band, the listeners, and indie rock at large." Pop Matters
"...his muse hasn’t run out of ways to torture him yet." Pitchfork
"That a band can successfully experiment after such an extended break is a testament to their self-preservation." FILTER
"Luckily
for everyone - from the peach-fuzz hipsters who claim to have witnessed
the original incarnation of the band in the flesh, to those
who actually did - Defend Yourself is virtually filler-less, unlike so
many filler-hiding-behind-one-good-song returns." MAGNET
"It
harks back to the classic sounds of Sebadoh - tender Barlow ballads,
balls to the wall Loewenstein rockers - essentially the yin and
yang that endeared the band to so many fans throughout the 90's, with
the artistic growth you'd expect from a band 14 years removed from
their last album." Under The Radar
"A band maintaining the same sound after 14 years is not usually a positive. With Sebadoh, it's a gift." eMusic
