Danish alterna-pop chanteuse Oh Land, aka Nanna Øland Fabricius, is gearing up for the release of her highly-anticipated new album Wish Bone. Defining of Montreal is impossible. There are too many perspectives to consider, angles to explore and layers to uncover. Just when you think you have a concept of what kind of creature they are they transform into something unexpected and new. As a result, each album holds the opportunity for re-discovery, re-immersion, re-appreciation.

On lousy with sylvianbriar, this paradigm holds true once more. The record was created with a new songwriting approach, a different recording method, and a fresh group of musicians. Seeking creative inspiration, Kevin Barnes re-located to San Francisco where he spent days soaking in the strange surroundings and channeling the city's energy into his writing. After a very prolific period there, he returned to Athens, GA and assembled the cast of musicians to begin the sessions.

Barnes eschewed computer recording, with its pitch correction, limitless effects plug ins and editing possibilities. Instead, with the help of engineer Drew Vandenberg (Deerhunter, Toro y Moi), he recorded lousy with sylvianbriar in his home studio on a 24 track tape machine. With no computer tricks to fall back on, the band - Kevin Barnes (guitars, bass, vocals), Rebecca Cash (vocals),Clayton Rychlik (drums, vocals), Jojo Glidewell (keys), Bob Parins (pedal steel, bass), and Bennet Lewis (guitars, mandolin) - could only get out of the recordings what they put into them. Most of the tracking was recorded live with the band in the same room together. They worked quickly, with the band members composing their parts on the fly with little second guessing. The album was recorded in just three weeks.

"I knew I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people used to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s," reveals Barnes. "I wanted to work fast and to maintain a high level of spontaneity and immediacy. I wanted the songs to be more lyric driven, and for the instrumental arrangements to be understated and uncluttered".

Opening track and lead single "fugitive air" feels like a Stones-y anthem, with sparks of Philip K Dick's psychedelic prose, Ralph Bakshi's cartoon violence and William S Burroughs' hyper-paranoia. "belle glade missionaries" finds Barnes lyrically at his most political, backed by a soundtrack that is pure Dylan circa Highway 61 Revisited.

Female vocalist Rebecca Cash makes several appearances on the album, taking the lead on the plaintive "raindrop in my skull," where her and Barnes share a Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris-inspired duet.

"she ain't speakin' now" ranks among of Montreal's all-time great songs, transforming its brooding acoustic guitar intro into a visceral angst-ridden rocker that sounds like the best moments of Neil Young & Crazy Horse. The album's closer "imbecile rages", a caustic and doleful epitaph for a crumbling relationship, is one of Barnes' most raw and personal statements.

Like the classic albums that inspired it, this is an album to be explored, to be lived with, to be listened to in happiness and in darkness, to be dissolved into. To be played very loudly at parties and with eyes closed, in headphones, alone. It should become dog-eared and dirty with use and it should lessen the blow of our enemies, in all of their forms.

The album will be available digitally, on tape, CD and 180-gram vinyl. 1500 copies of vinyl will be clear green vinyl and available through Polyvinyl's E-store exclusively, while the other retail copies will be pink vinyl. Cassette edition limited to 250 hand-numbered copies on green cassettes, courtesy of Joyful Noise Recordings.

Ariel Pink and Jorge Elbrecht have teamed up for their first ever collaborative split 7", written and recorded over one weekend at Gary's Electric studio in Brooklyn. "Hang On to Life" is heavy on heartbreak and high on melodrama, with Elbrecht's gentle tenor proving a perfect complement to Pink's raspier croon. Loping, soft-rock verses give way to a mid-song consolation phone-call ("she did what? ... I can't believe these girls, man...") sending the pair into a soaring canon. On the flipside, "No Real Friend" plays out in total soft-focus, taking cues from sugary J-Pop, lite rock balladry and televisual muzak (After School Special, and '70s family sitcom resolutions come to mind). There's certainly a winking awareness across this 7", but also a very real sincerity which comes through in its meticulously authentic execution. It should come as no surprise that this pair are drawn to these lesser trodden pop territories, and manage to appropriate them in the most imaginative way possible.

This quasi-Satanic Z-gore homage is the latest video from the Black Angels, Austin's pied pipers of scuzzy iso-tank psych. Mia Doi Todd plays Pasadena w DJ sets by Dublab

Prolific singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California, Mia Doi Todd will be performing August 9 at Levitt Pavillion in Pasadena, CA with DJ sets by Dublab. Derek Story also will be performing on the bill. Chosen by the New York Times as one of the Top Ten Records of 2011, prolific singer-songwriter Mia Doi Todd's latest album, Cosmic Ocean Ship (City Zen Records), is her most beautiful and optimistic work to date. Recorded and produced by Jonathan Wilson in Los Angeles using analog 2 inch tape, the album has a warmth and depth that showcases Mia's powerful, unique, and at times delicate voice.  Inspired by interstellar journeys, reflective encounters with friends, and explorations of forest, beach, jungle, desert, and city in Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, France, and India, Mia searched deep within to communicate a new perspective for - one that transports the listener into the ecstatic radiance of intimate Love, and one that is yearning with an overall positive vision for the future of Planet Earth and the human experience.  I'm hoping you'll consider advancing this show with a feature, CD review or advance blurb.

The whole record was tracked in just over 4 days, with Gabe Noel on bass, Andres Renteria on percussion, Adam MacDougall on keys and Jonathan Wilson both engineering and rotating on various instruments.  Most of the songs were recorded live with the band all playing together and Mia playing and singing in the same room.  Listening to Cosmic Ocean Ship, one hears the sweet nuanced relationship between the room, the tubes, the weathered circuitry, and the collective energy in the sessions.  There's a real magic captured on tape here.

In addition to the original compositions that make up the majority of Cosmic Ocean Ship, Mia covers "Gracias a la Vida" written by Chilean Folk artist Violeta Parra in 1966, and "Canto de Iemanjá," the Afro Samba tribute to the great Orisha of the Ocean, by Baden Powell and Vinícius de Moraes. Mia produced an extraordinary music video for "Canto de Iemanjá," that pays homage to the rituals that take place in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil at the Praia de Iemanjá every year on February 2nd, her special saint's day. In the summer of 2011, Mia had the great honor of opening for Stevie Wonder at the Hollywood Bowl as part of KRCW's Global Soul tribute produced by Ricky Minor. Mia has toured in the US and EuropeIn 2009, she toured in Brazil for the first time, performing in Sao Paulo and at the legendary Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro. Recently, Mia has been working on a Brazilian song cycle. She had two songs included in the new Red Hot + Rio 2 compilation, including a duet with Jose Gonzalez, "Um Girassol da Cor de Seu Cabelo." Last year Mia gave birth to her firest child.

Prolific singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California, Mia Doi Todd began singing as a child in choirs and later studied classical vocal technique.  She found her own voice in writing songs about nature, romance, love and loss.  Her first solo acoustic album, The Ewe and the Eye was released in 1997 as Todd was graduating from Yale University.  She then spent a year in Japan thanks to Yale's Parker Huang Fellowship, studying the avant-garde dance form Butoh and returned to the States to release two more acoustic albums, Come Out of Your Mine (1999) and Zeroone (2001).  In 2002, she was signed to Columbia Records and recorded The Golden State, collaborating with producer Mitchell Froom on more elaborate instrumentation.  That was followed up by two albums on the indie label Plug Research, Manzanita and an album of remixes, entitled La Ninja: Amor and Other Dreams of Manzanita.  In 2008, Mia began releasing music on her own label City Zen Records with Gea, featuring string and horn arrangements by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and an instrumental album of meditational music, entitled Morning Music.

“Raging Lung” Announced as Next Single

 

 

 

The Knife announce new single “Raging Lung” and have released a Shaking The Habitual Show live video set to the track. The video, self directed by Sorklubben (The Knife performance collective), is the first officially released footage of the Shaking The Habitual Show, and contains a montage of live footage filmed at The Knife's headline show at Hangaren Subtopia in Stockholm in May 2013.

 

The team behind the show, also known as Sorkklubben, is a temporary and expanding community that grows and jiggles. Together they made a performance based on collective joy, effort and sweat.
