Happy Birthday

It's my birthday today. I was born on May 6th. It rained today.

There are usually some good shows on my birthday.

Last year I saw Washed Out. But this year is going to be a small
dinner with friends and family. Thank you for all the online love.

The Flaming Lips "You Lust" video

"YOU LUST" VIDEO CLIP PREMIERS EXCLUSIVELY ON VICE.COM BEGINNING TODAY for 48 HOURS

THE FLAMING LIPS TO APPEAR ON LATE NIGHT WITH JIMMY FALLON ON MAY 15TH

May 2, 2013 - (Burbank) THE TERROR by THE FLAMING LIPS ,their thirteenth studio album is out now and amassing critical praise around the globe. THE TERROR was produced by long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and THE FLAMING LIPS at Tarbox Road Studios (Fredonia NY) and Pink Floor Studios (Oklahoma City).

Beginning today their brand new video for the album track, "You Lust" which features THE LIPS with assistance from Phantogramwill premier exclusively on Vice.Com for 48 hours. Click here to view now! If you don't already have THE TERROR, clickhere to purchase.

In other LIPS news, the band will perform "Try to Explain" live on The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wed May 15th. Check local NBC listing for details.

LIPS Multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd considers the music they've created on this album as; "a mood that might possibly suggest elements of Popol Vuh, Silver Apples, and Suicide."

Wayne Coyne explains, "Why would we make this music that is The Terror - this bleak, disturbing record...? I don't really want to know the answer that I think is coming. Maybe this is the beginning of the answer."

Suffice to say The Terror is a bold and expressive journey that has evolved over THE LIPS' nearly 30-year tended garden of sonic delights that ebbs and flows with extraordinary splashes of light and shade, pleasure and pain, sadness and hope, and the knowledge that to expect the unexpected is half the fun of THE LIPS experience. But don't take our word for it:
"Before the confetti cannons and sci-fi Day-Glo-pop operettas, The Flaming Lips made great acid-nightmare rock records about the high cost of transcendence. The Terror is that darkness returned: a gripping middle-age-mystic crisis with rude, cosmic-German electronics crowding Wayne Coyne's tremulous boy-explorer voice. The beauty is fleeting but piquant. A choral glow cuts past the clatter and seizures...Heaven, on Earth or anywhere else, doesn't come easy." Rolling Stone (4 out of 5 Stars)
"...Entrancing darkness makes for some seriously bleak, intensely involving new music." - Spin.Com (9 out of 10)
"Sounding almost post-apocalyptic in its scabrous, searching bleakness... The Terror moans and scrapes ominously from its opening seconds onward. Scorched and frayed, with an almost industrial ugliness to it... the sound of a world (and, it would seem, a band) in distress, even decay." -- NPR

Track listing for The Terror:
Look...The Sun Is Rising
Be Free, A Way
Try To Explain
You Lust
The Terror
You Are Alone
Butterfly, How Long It Takes To Die

Always There...In Our Hearts

ANE BRUN’S SONGS 2003-2013

ANE BRUN’S SONGS 2003-2013 OUT SEPTEMBER 10
 ON BALLON RANGER RECORDS

32-TRACK RETROSPECTIVE INCLUDES NEVER-BEFORE-HEARD MATERIAL

“Norwegian-born pop singer-songwriter Ane Brun makes music that fits well into the cinematic world.
Her songs are brimming with life and energy while still touching on feelings of loss and self-doubt.”—NPR
Ten years after the release of her debut album, Spending Time With Morgan, Ane Brun releases Songs 2003-2013, an anthology of her previous work. The 32-song collection will be released September 10 on Brun’s own label, Balloon Ranger. Songs 2003-2013 is more than a hits compilation—it is a celebration of Brun’s musical accomplishments from the last decade.
The opening track, “Humming One Of Your Songs,” was also the opening track on Brun’s debut, which speaks to the constancy of her message. The two-disc set also includes live arrangements of some of her most popular songs, original studio versions and rare, previously unreleased material.
Brun is well known for her covers, which reinterpret songs to make them uniquely hers. For Songs Brun recorded “Feeling Good,” the Newley/Bricusse classic popularized by Nina Simone, which she strips down to its basic chords. In that same vein of reinterpretation Brun turns her lens on herself, presenting a new version of “This Voice” from her 2005 album A Temporary Dive. The 2013 version of “This Voice” is based on her recent live performances, and it shows her evolution as a performer. The album also includes her take on Arcade Fire’s “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels).”
Songs also draws from another part of Brun’s oeuvre: her duets—of which she released an entire album in 2005. This retrospective includes an orchestral version of her duet with Peter Gabriel (with whom she toured worldwide) on his song “Don’t Give Up,” from his album New Blood.
Brun was born in Norway and lives in Stockholm. She has recorded eight albums over the last ten years. In 2005, her second album A Temporary Dive earned her critical acclaim at home and abroad and the Norwegian Grammy for Best Female Artist. Her third album The Changing Of The Seasons was recorded in Iceland by Valgier Sigur∂sson, of which the New York Times said, “Changing of the Seasons offers the kind of comfort that only well-versed singer-songwriters can give. An album full of sad songs to revel in as the days grow shorter and colder, Seasons is Brun’s strongest work yet.” Songs 2003-2013 is a confirmation of Brun’s achievements as a songwriter. She isn’t resting on her laurels; she is merely stating that she is here to stay. Brun will tour Europe beginning in October, in celebration of the last decade.

HANNI EL KHATIB RELEASES HEAD IN THE DIRT + tour

HANNI EL KHATIB RELEASES HEAD IN THE DIRT (PRODUCED BY DAN AUERBACH)

SHARES UNCENSORED VERSION OF "FAMILY" VIDEO VIA VIMEO

RELEASES MORNING BECOMES ECLECTIC SESSION FOR KCRW

LAUNCHES TOUR WITH BLACK ANGELS TOMORROW

WATCH: "Family (Uncensored Version)" - https://vimeo.com/65240336

WATCH: Morning Becomes Eclectic session -
Following yesterday's release of his second album Head In The Dirt, Hanni El Khatib is back today to share the uncensored version of the hugely popular "Family" music video along with the Morning Becomes Eclectic session that he recently recorded for KCRW in Los Anglees. Check out both above, along with footage of Hanni discussing recording Head In The Dirt with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach and performing new songs for France's Canal+, where Head In The Dirt is album of the week, below.

All of this comes the day before Hanni launches a US tour with Black Angles tomorrow in Baton Rouge, LA. All upcoming Hanni El Khatib tour dates are below.

When Hanni El Khatib started out, he was just a skater kid playing the world's worst guitar and singing by himself.  Inspired by a long line of determined do-it-for-themselves musicians winding back through punk and psychedelia to rock 'n' roll and early r&b and finally the first scratchy years of the blues, he'd record song after bare-bones song-in between day jobs and night life-just because he had things he wanted to sing about. Then in 2010 from a chance meeting, up-and-coming indie label Innovative Leisure recognized that there was something huge hiding in those little songs. And so El Khatib made his official full-power soul 'n' rock 'n' roll debut (on vinyl too) in 2010.

Soon his music would overtake him completely. By the time his first album Will The Guns Come Out was released in 2011, he clawed out a space of his own musically and left his job as creative director at streetwear label HUF as well as his hometown of San Francisco to become part-owner of (and
in-house Art Director) Innovative Leisure in Los Angeles, California. It had been the kind of year where anything that could happen would happen.

In 2012, however, Hanni El Khatib showed up to record his second album with just the clothes on his back-no guitar, no fancy almost-finished demos, and only about three weeks time to get from start to finish. While on tour, he'd met Dan Auerbach in a bar in Paris and after some whiskey got involved, they decided to partner up in Auerbach's studio in Nashville. The idea was to erase everything he'd become comfortable with and to make an album out of only raw instinct and inspiration.

The result is Head In The Dirt, produced by Auerbach, in which El Khatib takes a lucky eleven songs and makes the entire history of rebel music something all his own. He's got cut-to-the-bone rhythm 'n' blues ("Save Me") and overcranked Stooges-style stompers ("Family"). He's got bottomless Black Sabbath riff-outs (the back half of "Pay No Mind") and dub-a-delic garageland rockers ("Nobody Move") that call up the spirits of the Clash and the Equals both. His "Low" is just one Andre 3000 remix away from a club anthem, "Penny" is his stuck-in-your-head pop hit and "Sinking In The Sand" is his smash-your-head freak-out. The plan that first day in Nashville might have been to make something out of nothing-but by the end of Head In The Dirt, you'll realize that Hanni El Khatib actually made something out of everything.

WAMPIRE SHARES NEW TRACK "TRAINS"

WAMPIRE SHARES NEW TRACK "TRAINS" VIA ROLLING STONE

DEBUT LP CURIOSITY DUE MAY 14 VIA POLYVINYL

ANNOUNCE NEW TOUR DATES

Wampire photographed by Robbie Augspurger

Following the release of early singles "The Hearse" and "Spirit Forest," Wampire are back today to share "Trains" from their forthcoming debut Curiosity. When asked about the origin of the new single, Wampire's Eric Phipps said:
"'Trains' was written during a time when I was young and overly idealistic about love. A lady was driving me wild with her strange affection and I was naively waiting for it to 'mean something' or whatever. When she finally skipped town, I was sitting on a train that was delayed for some reason or another and started humming the melody that later became 'Trains.' By the time I got home I had the lyrics and rough skeletal structure of the song. Girls are like trains - you're always waiting for a chance to be let on just so you can hop off at the next stop."
Along with the new song, Wampire are announcing a run of West Coast tour dates, a handful of which are with STRFKR. Check out "Trains" and all upcoming Wampire tour dates below.
