Pere Ubu release Lady From Shanghai today, via Fire Records!

Pere Ubu release Lady From Shanghai today, via Fire Records!

"If Pere Ubu's '414 Seconds' were only an instrumental, it would be plenty terrifying: During these slinking seven minutes, drum hits trigger guitar cries that sound like death moans in the distance, while reeds of electronic noise slither like snakes through the din. But it's not instrumental, and both the curdled voice and the oneirological torment of frontman David Thomas only exacerbate the music's hall of horrors.
- Grayson Currin, Pitchfork

Pere Ubu return with their first new studio album for over three years in January 2013, the thirty-fifth anniversary of the group’s debut (The Modern Dance). Lady From Shanghai will be released on Fire Records (home to Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma, Giant Sand, Bailterspace, Josephine Foster and many others). The album ushers in a new era in the history of Pere Ubu, with David Thomas and band continuing to provoke and shock listeners, further establishing them as one of the most innovative, progressive and important bands of all time.

Lady from Shanghai is an album of dance music – it is the Ubu Dance Party.

“The dancer is the puppet of the dance,” says singer David Thomas. “It’s long past time somebody puts an end to this abomination. Lady From Shanghai has fixed the problem.
“What is the problem? Dance encourages the body to move without permission.”

The Pere Ubu project was supposed to be an end, not a beginning. Assembled in August 1975 to be the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young of the Cleveland music underground, the plan was to record one, maybe two singles and exist no more. Within months, however, those first self-produced records were being snapped up in London, Paris, Manchester, New York and Minneapolis. Pere Ubu was changing the face of rock music. Over the next 34 years they defined the art of cult; refined the voice of the outsider; and inspired the likes of Joy Division, Pixies, Husker Du, Henry Rollins, REM, Sisters of Mercy, Thomas Dolby, Bauhaus, Julian Cope and countless others.

Pere Ubu make a music that is a disorienting mix of midwestern groove rock, “found” sound, analog synthesizers, falling-apart song structures and careening vocals. It is a mix that has mesmerized critics, musicians and fans for decades.

Press for Lady From Shanghai:
"Pere Ubu made some of the darkest and most creative music of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Thirty five years after its release, The Modern Dance would easily make my top 10 of all time. We hear the word "industrial" bandied about to describe music — The Modern Dance exemplified that genre.  Wordsmith and singer David Thomas and his ever-changing band members have made more than a dozen albums worth hearing since then. And now they're back with a new song, "Free White," from a new album, Lady From Shanghai, due in January. It's good to know that singular, defining sound still haunts this band." Bob Boilen - NPR

“Ubu are generally regarded as the missing link between the Velvets and punk. From the beginning they obviously understood the nuts and bolts of popular music, and then loosened them.” Joe Cushley – Mojo

“They’re the greatest out-rock ‘n’ roll group of this millennium, and probably the next.” Edwin Pouncey – The Wire

Water EP out 1/22 on V2 / Cooperative Music

Box of Secrets & Fire Like This reissued in US

RRVideoShot.JPG

Watch: "Red River"

With their new EP, Water ready to drop on January 22nd, Blood Red Shoes share the video for explosive new track "Red River". The video contains live and on-the-road footage of the band's recent tour in Russia, which saw the pair encounter the full force of the Russian Customs officers, travel through the snow after shows, and spark mosh pits in Moscow and St Petersburg.

The band have said of the trip, "The video is a montage of footage from our recent trip to Russia. It was our first time over and was kind of insane, for many reasons. From the minute we landed and had a 4 hour fight with customs to get our gear into the country, to the last night when we made a 4am pilgrimage to Red Square, it was one hell of an experience. A crazy and beautiful country with crazy and beautiful people, one of the most full on crowds we've ever had on our first trip to a country."

The EP features three brand new songs, which were recorded in Dallas TX this October by John Congleton (The Roots/The Walkmen/Explosions In The Sky).

Meanwhile, Blood Red Shoes first two albums, 2008's Box of Secrets & 2010's Fire Like This will also be available in the US on January 22nd. These records were previously unavailable from US retailers. Box of Secrets features their break out hit "It's Getting Boring By The Sea" which was included on the soundtrack for feature film Scott Pilgrim vs. The World in 2010. Fire Like This garnered favourable reviews from the likes of the BBC, Pitchfork, Artrocker & the NME.

"enchanting black-and-white texture blending traditions of Japanese minimalism
and the American frontier. It's all so pretty I'm afraid saying anything else might diminish it."
The FADER

LA duo Tashaki Miyaki is pleased to announce two covers they recorded for acclaimed Los Angeles tastemaker, Aquarium Drunkard. AD invites artists to cut exclusive covers of their favorite artists/songs, these are known as the Lagniappe Sessions. Tashaki Miyaki chose The Replacements as their first artist to cover, with a beautifully-dense recording of "Unsatisfied," cementing their version with wistful slide guitar. Next the band tackled a '50s doo-wop classic, "I Only Have Eyes for You," originally recorded by The Flamingos.

Tashaki Miyaki is finishing up their debut LP to be released in 2013.

Paul Dillon MIRACLE FALLS 'DEBASEMENT TAPES'

PAUL DILLON (EX MERCURY REV/LONGWAVE) NEW ALBUM;
MIRACLE FALLS 'DEBASEMENT TAPES'
RE-RELEASED JANUARY 22ND 2013

Paul Dillon has done a lot in his years on this side of the Atlantic, working and touring with many of the best 'psych/shoegaze' acts around including Sparklehorse, Longwave and Mercury Rev.

Moving to Chicago from Dublin at 18, Paul met up with with Jimi Shields of Rollerskate Skinny fame, joining him on guitar in his new project Lotus Crown. The band was soon signed to Warner/Reprise Records and, with their debut album, 'Chokin' On The Jokes', produced by Dave Fridman, (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips , MGMT etc.), embarked on US and UK tours, opening for The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr.

After the breakup of the band, Paul relocated to New York City, subsidizing Lower East Side DJ gigs with a job at Kim's Records on St. Marks and continued writing and recording at home, inbetween tours as a guitar tech for the likes of Sparklehorse, Yo La Tengo and Ray Davies.

In 2001, Paul joined Mercury Rev on their world tour in support of 'All Is Dream', the follow up to their critically acclaimed 'Deserter's Songs' album, but subsequently left to focus on his own project, Silver Rockets. He continued touring as a session musician with acts such as Longwave, Favourite Sons and Metric's Emily Haines for her solo album 'Knives Don't Have Your Back'. Most recently, Paul joined Sparklehorse for the recording sessions of their as-yet-unreleased final album, which was produced by Steve Albini at Electrical Audio.

MIRACLE FALLS - 'Debasement Tapes' was recorded at Revolver Studios in Portland, Oregon, and includes guest appearances from Collin Hegna, (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), Pete Holmstrom, (The Dandy Warhols), Jason 'Plucky' Anchondo, (The Warlocks), Jeff Mercel and Grasshopper, (Mercury Rev). This criminally overlooked album, which was made available through iTunes this past fall, will be re-released later this month.

SHUGGIE OTIS' 1974 ALBUM "INSPIRATION INFORMATION"

PSYCHEDELIC SOUL MAN SHUGGIE OTIS' 1974 ALBUM,
INSPIRATION INFORMATION, LONG OUT OF PRINT, RETURNS COUPLED
WITH PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED ALBUM WINGS OF LOVE

FEATURES ORIGINAL INSPIRATION INFORMATION ALBUM
PLUS FOUR UNRELEASED TRACKS ON CD 1, PAIRED WITH WINGS OF LOVE, AN ALBUM OF 14 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED LIVE AND STUDIO TRACKS RECORDED 1975-2000

Available everywhere April 16, 2013, through Epic/Legacy

"The Shuggie Otis Rite Tour" continues through winter and spring, with shows in Mexico (February), Australia and Japan (March), and North America (April)

For more than four decades, Shuggie Otis has earned respect as a musician's musician. His composition "Strawberry Letter 23," a #5 Pop hit for the Brothers Johnson in 1977, is just the tip of Shuggie's musical iceberg. He has won praise as a guitarist on projects with artists as diverse as his father, Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame R&B pioneer Johnny Otis (1921-2012), Al Kooper, Etta James, Charles Brown, Frank Zappa, Chico Hamilton, Don "Sugarcane" Harris, Mos Def, and many others.
But it was Shuggie's third and final album, 1974's Inspiration Information on Epic Records, that was destined to inspire at least two generations of admirers around the world. Widely regarded as a masterpiece, songs from the long out-of-print album have been sampled on pop hits including OutKast's "Ms. Jackson," Beyoncé's "Gift From Virgo," Digable Planets' "For Corners," and the list goes on.
INSPIRATION INFORMATION/ WINGS OF LOVE, a brilliant restoration personally supervised by Shuggie, arrives as a double-CD set on April 16, 2013, through Epic/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.
In this new package, the first CD will comprise the original nine-song Inspiration Information album, with the addition of four previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded in 1971. The tracks were done at Columbia Studios and at Hawk Sound, the 16-track studio built in the backyard of the Otis family homestead in the West Athens neighborhood of Los Angeles. The second CD, entitled WINGS OF LOVE, is a new album of 14 previously unreleased live and studio tracks recorded by Shuggie between 1975 and 2000. This is the first new music that the world has heard from Shuggie since 1974.
The release of INSPIRATION INFORMATION/WINGS OF LOVE caps an amazing new phase of Shuggie's career, as he emerged from his quiet (but productive) seclusion in Los Angeles to complete this package and return to the stage. "The Shuggie Otis Rite Tour" commenced in November 2012, with a European trip that included shows in London, Paris, Antwerp, Hamburg, Amsterdam, and Dublin. After the UK shows, The Independent hailed Shuggie as a "Musical visionary," while The Guardian called him "A spectacularly gifted musician."
Four days after the European leg concluded, Shuggie made a rare appearance at the intimate subterranean Echoplex venue in L.A.'s Echo Park area. (The last time Shuggie played a local show was a one-off date with Mos Def in 2004, in conjunction with Mos Def's second album, The New Danger, on which Shuggie played guitar on "Blue Black Jack.") L.A. Weekly blogger Sean O'Connell attended the Echoplex show and wrote: "Shuggie Otis is Los Angeles music royalty... Shuggie's performance last night hovered somewhere amid the past and the future, acknowledging his soulful heritage while dipping into a blues-drenched familiarity that united father, son and holy ghost."
"The Shuggie Otis Rite Tour" carries on through the winter and spring of 2013, beginning in Mexico, then Australia and Japan, culminating with a cross-country North American trip in April. The touring includes album release week shows in Chicago (Lincoln Hall on April 17th) and New York City (BB King's on April 18th). (Please see itinerary below.)
In his native Los Angeles and around the world, the name Shuggie Otis is spoken in reverential tones by his peers, as a multi-talented instrumental genius (most notably on guitar), songwriter, producer and all-around reminder of the musical joys of the psychedelic era. In his liner notes essay for INSPIRATION INFORMATION/WINGS OF LOVE, UK-based writer Chris Campion ranks the original LP alongside such late-'60s/early-'70s breakthroughs by black artists as Love's Forever Changes, the Jimi Hendrix Experience's Axis Bold As Love, Sly & the Family Stone's There's A Riot Going On, and Stevie Wonder's Innervisions.
Another longtime fan is Columbia recording artist Raphael Saadiq, who has said: "Millions of thoughts fly through my mind when I think about the music of Shuggie Otis. The word 'genius' is frivolously used these days, but when it comes to Shuggie and his brilliant body of work, it is not used often enough. His music is passion personified and you would have to be deaf not to hear it."
Shuggie Otis (b. 1953) spent virtually his entire young life playing in and around the various Johnny Otis bands which introduced such R&B legends through its lineups (since the late-'40s) as Big Jay McNeely, Wynonie Harris, Charles Brown, and Little Esther Phillips, to name a few. Shuggie was finally "discovered" by Al Kooper during his stint as a Columbia Records A&R staff producer starting in the late-'60s. Kooper's second 'Super Session' LP, Kooper Session: Al Kooper with Shuggie Otis (released early 1970) essentially introduced Shuggie, the guitarist on all seven tracks, who was a 15-year old wunderkind when he recorded the album.
He was a year older when he recorded Here Comes Shuggie Otis (released late 1970) for Epic, his first official LP under his own name, produced by Johnny Otis and featuring the cream of L.A. jazz session players. Freedom Flight (Epic, 1971), again produced by Johnny Otis, was Shuggie's second solo LP in two years, and is the source for "Strawberry Letter 23." Shuggie was just 21 years old when Inspiration Information was issued on Epic at the end of 1974.
After the release of Inspiration Information, as far as the public knew, Shuggie simply disappeared from view. But as he told Chris Campion, he "never stopped making music... There were little lapses here and there, little breaks from time to time, but I never stopped playing, writing, recording. I was still going around to record companies, still pitching my tapes." Those tapes, most of them recorded at his home studio, are the substance of the "new album" - or "lost album," depending on your perspective - now known as WINGS OF LOVE.
"Like pop as Michael Jackson made it, as Prince made it, but more," Campion offers, while also suggesting, "That you can hear traces of both those artists in their prime on WINGS OF LOVE is no mere accident. Such has been Shuggie's influence, you can bet they were not only aware of Shuggie Otis, they studied him." Several tracks are singled out, among them "Tryin' To Get Close To You" (which utilizes the Rhythm King, an early beatbox-metronome that became a signature of Shuggie's sound and which he still employs today); "Doin' What's Right" (one of several songs that "name-check" INSPIRATION INFORMATION); "Black Belt Sheriff" ("Shuggie Otis, simple and plain, stripped and bare, singing and playing, without either a studio or a band to back him up"); and of course the epic 11 and a half-minute title track, "Wings Of Love" ("build[ing] on a melody, brilliant in its minimalism, that circles, builds, takes off, soars and flies, buoyed by dazzling guitar arpeggios that sound like Paganini ripping on electric guitar").
An overriding theme is "the romantic, lovelorn teenager, who has now grown up and matured, lived and learned, sometimes hard lessons, but never in vain. He's no longer just dreaming of an idealized love, but has found it, tasted it for real and now has to work out how to get it and/or keep it." This is the driving force behind "Give Me A Chance," "Don't Run Away," "Tryin' To Get Close To You" and "Special."

WINGS OF LOVE, Campion sums up, is "a time capsule of music from another age - to be precise, several ages - buried, but not forgotten, waiting for the date it can be cracked opened, pored over and appreciated. And that time is now."

BOYD RICE / NON

98 MESEROLE AVE, GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN

For the first time in many, many years, the pioneering electronic artist Boyd Rice/NON will be coming to New York to play Europa Club in Greenpoint Brooklyn on January 24th. In November this prolific artist released his first album since 2002, Back to Mono, under his moniker NON. Self-proclaimed as the album that re-imagines the genre he created, he will be showcasing material from this innovative record as well as mixing in some classic numbers you are sure to recognize.

Joining Boyd, is the ostentatious duo, Hirsuit Pursuit. Tickets are available now for the show and can be purchased here!

Turn Me On, Dead Man
Watusi
Back To Mono
Seven Sermons To The Dead
Obey Your Signal Only
Man Cannot Flatter Fate
Scream
Back To Mono (Live)
Turn Me On, Dead Man (Reprise)
Fire Shall Come
Warm Leatherette

Back To Mono, released November 6th 2012, is a return to Boyd Rice’s noise roots and the first new album since 2002’s Children Of The Black Sun.

Back To Mono’s tracklisting encompasses brand new recordings - made with Wes Eisold of Cold Cave and New York based producer Bryin Dall (Thee Majesty / Hirsute Pursuit) as well as long time collaborator Z’ev. The album also features unreleased studio and live recordings from the late 70s, plus a cover of The Normal’s “Warm Leatherette”, Mute’s first release which explains Rice, is “the best electronic pop song – bar none. I bought that single fifteen minutes before meeting Daniel. And that meeting changed my life.”

It is difficult to imagine the pioneering impact that tracks such as 1978’s “Watusi” (here re-recorded by Wes Eisold) and “Scream” (recorded live in 1979 at Los Angeles’ Whiskey A Go-Go) must have had at the time—now that noise is a recognized genre.

Says Rice, “I was doing sample-based music about a decade before the advent of samplers, when everyone else was using bass, guitars, keyboards and drums.  It has been said that I invented the first sampler.  Perhaps I did. At the time I called it the N.M.U. (or noise manipulation unit). It allowed me to essentially sample numerous tracks of noise and mould them into rudimentary rhythms.  This was my principle instrument for a good many years and can be heard on Back to Mono, in the late 70’s archival recordings.”

Turn Me On, Dead Man and Turn Me On, Dead Man (Reprise) are both collaborations with musician, artist, poet, dancer and “long time partner-in-crime” Z’ev, who has previously collaborated with the likes of Merzbow, and Psychic TV amongst others Cold Cave’s Wes Eisold produced and recorded the title track at Cold Cave’s Philadelphia studio.

Boyd Rice / NON’s first release was what is known as the Black Album (1975). “When I started to compose and perform noise music in the ‘70s there simply were no other noise groups.” As noise became more commonplace, Rice moved into more subtle and complex recordings.

Explains Rice, “Back to Mono was my attempt to demonstrate that the genre I created still had room to grow; that it could still be re-imagined.”

Press Quotes
"Punk's not dead! And Fidlar are here from Los Angeles to prove it with three-chord thrashes that summon the spirit of 77" - Guardian
"Rock needs a band like this from time to time. Someone to remind all those Coldplay’s of the world where music’s balls are." - Nylon Guys
"FIDLAR channel elements of classic acts like the White Stripes and Pixies, while practically begging for a co-headlining tour with contemporaries like Bass Drum of Death and JEFF the Brotherhood" - SPIN
"The tune can be summed up in a handful of image descriptions; sandboarding, grim reaper, suicidal flip-up hat, skull mask, and shred." - Filter Magazine
"We all have a major music crush on FIDLAR here at VICE" - VICE
"They remind me of Pixies a lot (an obvious link, given the singer's Frank Black style screeeeeeam), but there's also some really, really nice'n'fuzzy guitars in there that sound like they've been nicked from the blueprint Death In Vegas followed on 'Aiesha'." - NME
"FIDLAR has an agressive, straightforward, but melodic conception of punk." - LA Times
"But one wouldn't mistake the band for one of its slacker subjects, not when they play this fast. The tracks sizzle with the aggression and bargain-price fidelity of the SoCal punk tradition, though FIDLAR's catchy hooks have more in common with Social Distortion and Wavves than Black Flag. " - MTV Buzz

"Thanks for coming, man. Want some bum juice?"
"What the fuck is in this shit?"
"Tampico and Everclear. It's pretty gross."
When they started in 2009, seeing FIDLAR meant showing up to a house party and eventually having this exchange with one of them. Zac Carper, The bands guitarist and singer (well, one of 'em) would hand you a red cup , throw an arm around your neck and probably end up blurting out how fucked up he was. Their set list would read more like a grocery list of party supplies than a list of songs: "Cocaine. Cheap Beer. Chinese weed. Four Loko."
After a few years of being a band Zac still plugs in his pedals attached to a skate deck ("Pedal board", get it?) and says "Hi We're FIDLAR: F-I-D-L-A-R. It means 'Fuck It Dog, Life's a Risk".  Seeing a FIDLAR set consists of drinking and dancing with people that are twice as drunk as you are while the band rips through songs about what they know best: The girl doesn't call, my ex is a whore, I lost my phone, my car is a piece of shit, my friends are pieces of shit, I do too many drugs, I'm really awkward, I love Del Taco.
FIDLAR is Zac Carper, Elvis Kuehn,  Brandon Schwartzel, and Max Kuehn.   Elvis and Zac met at Kingsize Soundlabs in LA and recorded a ton of demos with the band before playing a live show.  Their first show was on a FMLY bike ride at a skatepark in Culver City. Three years later the band has played with Black Lips, OFF!, Japanther and toured with The Hives.  They've released two EP's and just got back from touring Europe.
Listening to them, you can tell that the band did their homework on punk rock and seem dead set on inflicting lessons on anyone willing to listen.  Any given song will give you a Germs influenced guitar solo, the catchy "Ooo's" and "Ah's" of The Misfits , and lyrics in the same family as Black Flag's "Six Pack" and "TV Party" . On the same token they can just as easily be compared to any of the bands they cover (Blink 182, FEAR, CCR, Warron Zevon), yet it all comes across entirely their own: Surfier, Faster, more fuzzed out, more personal and a lot more drunk.
FIDLAR's first LP is coming out via Mom + Pop and Wichita recordings. Recorded at their home studio, The album is set to be 14 tracks long and out January 22nd.  FIDLAR are your dumbass friends that find a beer, scrape the shit off their shoes, and tell you how the hardest thing about waking up late and trying not to fuck up your life is having to do it with no job, no money and everyone bumming your cigarettes.

ANGEL OLSEN SHARES TWO NEW VIDEOS -- "TINIEST SEED" AND THE PREVIOUSLY UNHEARD "SWEET DREAMS" -- PREMIERED THIS MORNING VIA NPR MUSIC

"SLEEPWALKER" 7" OUT JAN. 15 ON SIXTEEN TAMBOURINES; HALF WAY HOME LPS BACK IN STOCK

UPCOMING SHOWS: JAN. 4 IN LOS ANGELES, FEB. 7 IN ST. LOUIS, FEB. 8 IN CHICAGO

Let's all begin the new year with some new Angel Olsen, shall we? Today, she shares with the world two new films, premiered this morning via NPR Music. There's the "Tiniest Seed" video, which is a track off of her stunning sophomore album, Half Way Home, and the video for the previously unreleased song, "Sweet Dreams." A "transatlantic collaboration between four friends," filmmakers Randy Sterling Hunter, Ashley Connor, Zia Anger, and Ms. Olsen created these with the idea of the viewer watching them in tandem. "Two songs were written and recorded in Chicago and then sent to Vienna. There they were translated into a film score. The score was mailed back across the Atlantic and then interpreted using a hand-wound 16mm camera . . . The final version is the documentation of an epistolary-exchange lasting nearly a year . . . an attempt to sync the unsyncable and our experiment at reconciling the space between us." NPR Music tells the full story about these two films.

"Songs on [Half Way Home] had much in common with the passions and range of a singer like Roy Orbison. The common thread between that powerful singer-songwriter and hit-maker from Texas and this more delicate Midwesterner is that they both write from the heart and sing with a range that may make you stop what you're doing and drop your jaw a bit." - NPR Music

Following that sold-out tour of select cities in November, Angel will play her first Los Angeles show tomorrow at Bootleg Bar.
