THE LOST TAPES VINYL BOX SET OUT DECEMBER 4th, 2012

5 LP SET – 180g VINYL

More than a great listen, the set solidifies both Can’s oeuvre and their approach to music making as far-reaching influences."

a masterpiece in it’s own right

“A startling discovery”

Mute and Spoon are delighted to announce that, due to phenomenal demand, Can’s The Lost Tapes will be released as a 5 LP box set on 180g vinyl on December 4th, 2012.

The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore and edited by Jono Podmore. The vinyl issue of The Lost Tapes will come with a 24” square poster and a 28 page booklet with sleeve notes by Irmin Schmidt and Ian Harrison.

‘Lost Tapes’ were discovered when the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum. The new owners sentimentally preserved everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau.

Whilst dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labeling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore started to go through over fifty hours of music.

What they found was years of archived material--not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons – soundtracks to films that were never released and tracks that didn’t make it onto the final versions of albums due to space.

Irmin Schmidt explains “Obviously the tapes weren't really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them. Everybody except Hildegard, who watches over Can and its work like the dragon over the gold of the Nibelungen and doesn't allow forgetting.

The final cut of tracks, dating from 1968-1977, features studio material recorded at Schloss Nörvenich and Can Studio, Weilerswist with the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and on most tracks, vocals from Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki.

Can was formed by ex-student of Stockhausen Irmin Schmidt, who, fired by the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa abandoned his career in classic music to form a group which could utilise and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.

Can’s influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been. They themselves have always been impossible to classify and reflecting this, the scope of artists who in recent years have cited Can as a major influence is varied from John Lydon to Radiohead, The Fall to Portishead.
Richard Hawley: "Can are impossible to classify and its impossible to ignore their seismic influence on so many diverse musical paths, I'm so glad what was lost has been found"

Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite: "I can honestly say that there isn't another band who sound like Can. Their music was of a future that we haven't yet arrived at. Influencing people with their ambition more than just music we're incredibly lucky to have found even more of their music to wonder at. God bless Can."

New Order’s Stephen Morris: "Can are the most revolutionary band ever, hearing Monster Movie for the first time was like stepping into another world. You Doo Right is the reason I took up the drums in the first place. It's not a song, it's a journey. I love everything they have ever done."

Wild Beasts’ Tom Fleming: "Can are, along with very few others, what I consider to be the zenith of how a group can play together; loose and sensuous, but tightly coiled and always ready to go off; academically trained but gloriously, beautifully casual. I'm not at all surprised that unheard-of recordings exist, they sound like they just did it, every day."

Factory Floor’s Gabe Gurnsey: "Can is pure escapism. I have great memories of driving back through the British countryside after FF recording sessions listening to 'Oh Yeah' over and over, dancing to 'I Want More' in the early hours and wishing I'd written 'Quantum Physics'. Repetition is the platform for free thinking, something we try to mirror in Factory Floor."

With a phenomenal canon of work that includes Tago Mago, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2011, The Lost Tapes is an opportunity to hear unreleased material from this iconic band – whoever thought that would be possible?

ERIC BURDON AND THE GREENHORNES RELEASE EP

ERIC BURDON AND THE GREENHORNES RELEASE EP ON RECORD STORE DAY’S BLACK FRIDAY

ALBUM PRODUCED BY BRENDAN BENSON AND RELEASED ON READYMADE RECORD

[October 22nd, 2012, Nashville, TN] Hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the “100 Greatest Voices of All Time,” Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Eric Burdon has teamed up with producer Brendan Benson Cincinnati garage rock mainstays The Greenhornes for a four song EP. The album will be released on 180 gram vinyl only on Record Store Day’s “Black Friday” (November 23rd) on Readymade Records. The album will be released digitally on November 27th, and available for pre-order now at this link: http://jsrdirect.com/bands/ericburdon/.

Eric Burdon has been a commanding presence in the musical landscape as the front man for The Animals and WAR and in his own solo career. The Cincinnati trio of Craig Fox, Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs) and “Little Jack” Lawrence (The Raconteurs, Dead Weather, Blanche) have always cited The Animals as one of The Greenhornes’ biggest influences. Bringing the two parties together was a natural fit and an inspired idea.

This collaboration was Brendan Benson's inspired idea to reinvigorate the sound of The Animals. After Benson performed with Burdon at SXSW 2012, he immediately knew that the voice of The Animals would be a perfect match for the Greenhornes and brought the two parties together in Nashville at Welcome to 1979 studio. Benson had previously worked with The Greenhornes rhythm section in their band The Raconteurs and also as a producer on their 2005 EP East Grand Blues. The week following SXSW Benson, Burdon and The Greenhornes hunkered down at Nashville’s Welcome to 1979 studio and produced the four song EP. This four song EP, recorded in a day and a half, is a result of an immediate and simultaneous connection.

ANGEL OLSEN ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR IN SUPPORT OF HALF WAY HOME

Angel Olsen has a fresh edge to her sound, a warm and wonderful range, and an otherworldly skill and charm. Her special presence became apparent through her debut, Strange Cacti and radiates even more on her sophomore album, Half Way Home. PUBLIC IMAGE LTD announce in store events

PUBLIC IMAGE LTDANNOUNCE IN STORE SIGNINGS ACROSS THE NATIONON THEIR CURRENT U.S. TOUR
PIL TO PERFORM A ONE-NIGHT-ONLY SHOW SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28 AT CLUB NOKIA IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

THE NIGHT BEFORE JOHN LYDON WILL DJ THEKCRW HALLOWEEN MASQUERADE PARTY IN LOS ANGELESSATURDAY, OCTOBER 27 @ PARK PLAZA HOTEL

"...a sprawling, hour-long musical journey that both evokes the PiL of old and pushes into new territory. A mixture of big,
bassy, fast-moving tracks
, some slower guitar pieces and Lydon's at times-unaccompanied voice, This is PiL has an
epic album feel
without being overblown.”
--Edward Krudy, Reuters (October 18, 2012)

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD have announced three in-store appearances across the U.S.: Wednesday, October 24 at Amoeba in San Francisco 6:00pm (1855 Haight St), Thursday, Nov 1 at Good Records in Dallas 12:30pm (1808 Greenville Ave.) and Saturday, Nov 3 at the Fun Fun Fun Fest-Waterloo Records Tent in Austin 4:00pm (Auditorium Shores, 920 W. Riverside Dr.). The band is currently in the midst of their first U.S. tour since their 2010 reunion trek which kicked off at Coachella. The group will hit Los Angeles’ Club Nokia for a one-night-only show Sunday, October 28. The night before, the iconic PiL frontman JOHN LYDON is set for a headlining DJ set at KCRW’s Halloween Masquerade Party in Los Angeles on Saturday, October 27 at Park Plaza Hotel. For more information, visit: http://www.kcrw.com/masquerade.

For fans that are unable to attend the shows, PiL will be live streaming their performance on Friday, October 26 in Reno, NV at the Knitting Factory Via Livestream. Visit: https://new.livestream.com/theknitreno/PiL.

The potent and eclectic PiL line-up featuring JOHN LYDON (vocals), LU EDMONDS (guitar), SCOTT FIRTH (bass) and BRUCE SMITH (drums) continues to garner rave reviews for their epic live sets which are not to be missed.

“The crowd swelled and danced in place to the hypnotic 'Warrior' as Lydon's bellows and barks echoed and intertwined with Edmonds's otherworldly sounding stabs of delayed and effected guitar.”
--David Von Bader, MIAMI NEW TIMES (October 8, 2012)

“Lydon and company delivered a two-hour plus set that turned out to be a sustained, Apocalypse Now descent into hell. From the propulsive opening attack on ‘This Is Not A Love Song’ through classic deep-groove diatribes like ‘Flowers Of Romance’ and ‘Death Disco’-both of them among the evening’s highlights--the group kept it dark and angry…The playing and pacing were inspired throughout, with recent material like ‘Deeper Water,’ ‘Reggie Song,’ and ‘Out of The Woods’ sounding even more urgent than on the group’s excellent latest release, This Is Pil. “
--Bernard Perusse, MONTREAL GAZETTE (October 18, 2012)

The group--described as “a musical force taking a jackhammer to pop music’s boundaries” (Phil Gallo, BILLBOARD, 5/19/12)--are touring in support of their new album, THIS IS PiL. It was released May 29 this year via their own PiL Official label, with distribution through Redeye in the U.S. and Cargo in the U.K. THIS IS PiL--the band’s first album of new music in 20 years--has generated rave reviews from critics and features new tracks such as “Deeper Water,” “Lollipop Opera,” “One Drop” and “Out of the Woods.” On October 1, a new AA side single titled “Out Of The Woods/Reggie Song” was released in CD, digital and as a special 12 inch Vinyl. Delta Rae Opens for Michelle Obama at UNC Chapel Hill

Delta Rae Opens for Michelle Obama at UNC Chapel Hill

Durham, NC based Delta Rae opened for First Lady Michelle Obama earlier this week at Carmichael Arena at UNC Chapel Hill. The band's performance preceded The First Lady taking the podium to encourage college students and other supporters to vote, as early voting began in North Carolina yesterday. "There are currently so many issues being discussed and decisions being made in Washington that are going to drastically affect our generation" says Eric Hölljes of Delta Rae. "I truly hope, as young people, we stand up in this election and let our collective voice be heard."

Delta Rae has been very involved with the Obama campaign in their home state of North Carolina. They were invited to perform at the DNC in Charlotte alongside James Taylor, only to have the show washed out at the last minute due to a venue change due to rain.

Several years ago, California voters passed Prop 8, which effectively banned gay marriage in the state. In response, Delta Rae's Ian Hölljes wrote the song "Chain on Love," protesting what he believed Prop 8 to be -- a severely unjust law that directly discriminated against the LGBT community and, by doing so, infringed on the rights of all Americans.   In May, North Carolina voters faced a similar choice with Amendment One. Delta Rae fervently supports marriage equality and, more generally, the equal rights of the entire LGBT community.

Delta Rae were recently profiled on NPR's All Things Considered. NPR describes the Durham, NC six-piece band's sound as "modern folklore." The band themselves, which includes three siblings: Ian, Eric and Brittany Holljes, tell VH1 that if one must categorize their music, they usually call it Americana. "It captures so much of American music across all boundaries and time." VH1 selected Delta Rae as their "You Oughta Know" Artist Of The Month for October and has moved their video for their single, "Bottom Of The River," into heavy rotation.

If you've never heard of Delta Rae and need a good introduction, check out this rendition they did of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" for Billboard. Goosebumps. Delta Rae recently performed "Bottom Of The River" on Conan and have been touring relentlessly all year in support of their debut album, Carry The Fire, which came out on June 19th (iTunes). A full list of dates is below, please let us know if you are interested in checking out a show.

Talk Normal Sunshine Streaming Now At Spin Magazine

Talk Normal Sunshine Streaming Now At Spin Magazine
Sophomore Album Out October 23 On Joyful Noise
Fall Tour Dates Announced

Talk Normal will release their sophomore LP Sunshine on October 23 via Joyful Noise Recordings. Spin is running an exclusive album stream and a Q&A with the band. The Brooklyn-based duo chatted about the recording process (five different studios in two states) and inspiration for the record (including Big Freedia and Merchant of Venice). Talk Normal has a NYC album release show scheduled for October 26 at Secret Project Robot and will tour this fall in support of Sunshine with Future Islands. All shows are listed below.

After years of friendship, Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro's Talk Normal first emerged on the NYC music scene in 2007, initially releasing demos, cassettes and their Secret Cog vinyl EP. Following the 2009 release of their debut album Sugarland on Rare Book Room Records (recorded and mixed by Nicolas Vernhes), Talk Normal released a handful of 7"s (including a split 7" with Thurston Moore on Nathan Howdeshell from The Gossip's Fast Weapons Records) and shared the stage with the likes of Sonic Youth, Wire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Zola Jesus.

In the three years since Sugarland, Talk Normal have refined their noisy vigor into the diverse batch of songs found on Sunshine. Tracks like "Bad Date", "Cover", and "Hurricane" carry almost a meditative emotional energy, where others like "Sunshine" and "Shot This Time" err on the side of explosive driving rock. Plus dance-y "XO", narrative noisers "Lone General" and "Baby, Your Heart's Too Big", and standout vocal harmonies on "Hot Water Burns". Produced by the band, Sunshine was recorded in 2011 by Christina Files at Vacation Island Studios in Brooklyn NY and Echo Canyon West in Hoboken NJ (Files also contributed to production). Allen Farmello mixed at The Snow Farm in Brooklyn NY.

Unlike traditional noisy-rock, Talk Normal's Sunshine is steeped in melody, albeit unconventional melody. Sweet-sounding female vocals are present throughout, sometimes as sung lyrics and sometimes as instruments themselves. Ambro & Register's combined voices often volley back and forth, each providing equal contributions to vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation - meticulously orchestrating not only the arrangements, but also the tonality of each collected sound. As Pitchfork describes: "(their) vocals can handle both desperate screech and matter-of-fact detachment somewhere between Karen O and Kim Gordon." Combined with Register's flowing, nearly-drony riffs and Ambro's finely choreographed beats, the end result is a natural sonic cohesion. Maybe not the sunshine you're used to, but rays within which you'll want to bask.

Upcoming Shows:

CRIME & THE CITY SOLUTION on tour now

CRIME & THE CITY SOLUTION

ON TOUR NOW

OUR FRIEND WAKES FROM HER SLUMBER, BLINKS IN THE SUNLIGHT AND RUBS HER EYES.
CRIME SMILES, ALL MISCHIEF AND WONDER.
LET THE EXCITATION BEGIN –
CRIME AND THE CITY SOLUTION LIVE AGAIN

Crime & the City Solution – who embark on a worldwide tour this week, their first in over 20 years – have made a brand new track available, “My Love Takes Me There”, the first taste of American Twilight.

Recorded in Detroit and scheduled to hit shelves in spring of 2013, this will be Crime & the City Solution’s first new album release since 1990’s Paradise Discotheque.

Listen to “My Love Takes Me There”:

For this latest incarnation of Crime & The City Solution, Berlin era members Simon Bonney (vocals), Bronwyn Adams (violin) and Alexander Hacke (guitar), are joined by renowned visual artist Danielle de Picciotto, Jim White (drums, The Dirty Three), David Eugene Edwards (guitar, 16 Horsepower / Wovenhand), Troy Gregory (bass, The Dirtbombs / Swans / Spiritualised) and Matthew Smith (keyboards).

The live show will feature new music from American Twilight as well as reinterpretations of songs from the Berlin and London periods. It will also feature, for the first time, a powerful visual component designed by new member Danielle de Picciotto.

Using back projection on large screens, the imagery will accompany the live performance as a cinematic embodiment of the Crime musicscape, and will perfectly complement the grand narratives and dynamism that are the hallmark of Crime’s music and live shows.

Crime & the City Solution recently released A History Of Crime - Berlin 1987 – 1991, the latest in a new series of An Introduction To…  compilations with tracklistings chosen by the band. For this Crime & the City Solution have selected tracks from the three Berlin era albums: Shine (1988), The Bride Ship (1989) and Paradise Discotheque (1990). The album also features the band’s swansong, ‘The Adversary’, from the film Until The End Of The World (Wim Wenders,1991).

Crime & the City Solution had several incarnations, the first of which was formed by Simon Bonney in Sydney, Australia, in 1977/78. Mk II saw the band based in Melbourne before Simon Bonney was encouraged to move to England in 1984 by Mick Harvey (Birthday Party / The Bad Seeds) who joined the band along with Rowland S Howard, his brother Harry on bass and one time Swell Maps drummer Epic Soundtracks.

In 1987, Bonney and Harvey moved to Berlin, and it’s here that the A History Of Crime - Berlin 1987 – 1991 takes its inspiration. The band at this point comprised of Simon Bonney, Mick Harvey, Einstürzende Neubauten’s Alexander Hacke, Thomas Stern, ex-DAF/Liaisons Dangereuses Chrislo Haas, and Bonney’s co-writer Bronwyn Adams.
