Here’s a little something to kickstart your Tuesday! Back in March Bella Union stalwarts White Denim and Plantoid toured the UK together, getting on famously and guesting during each other’s sets throughout the tour. The bands first met last December when Plantoid supported White Denim at Chalk in Brighton, with frontman James Petralli subsequently inviting Plantoid to support them again on White Denim’s March UK tour. Ahead of the tour Petralli thought it would be fun to do something together, and being a fan of The Pretenders suggested they both cover of a track of theirs, with White Denim choosing “Time The Avenger” and Plantoid going with “Tattooed Love Boy”, and each band’s singer guesting for the other. Commenting on the collaborations James Petralli says: “Ahead of our spring run of the UK together, I thought it would be a fun and nice way to start our working relationship by doing a little song swap. I chose The Pretenders because they have been a group that I have listened to fanatically since I was a kid. I feel that the group's tight, direct playing, their deceptively tricky arrangement choices, and Chrissy Hynde's cutting lyricism and approach to the microphone should be essential touchstones for every rock and roll band. I suspected that Plantoid would have a similar penchant for their music and thankfully they did!”
Chloe Spence of Plantoid adds: “James reached out to us ahead of our spring tour together and we were delighted to hear that he wanted to do a cover swap of Pretenders tunes with us! Being longtime fans ourselves, we were overjoyed. We decided on ‘Tattooed Love Boys’ with its raucous and punky energy, blaring guitar solo and odd time. We went straight into the studio with our producer Nathan and got right into laying down some takes. We wanted to make sure the track kept its identity whilst emphasising and embellishing on the instrumentation, raw production and brisk tempo to ensure a fresh injection of Plantoid genes! It’s both surreal and amazing to hear James’ soulful voice float on top, carrying that Hynde sass and attitude. We had tons of fun doing this and thank James massively for the opportunity.”
