The Damned Documentary Trailer Released + SXSW Premiere

DAMNED DOCUMENTARY TO
WORLD PREMIERE AT SXSW

The Damned Will Attend, Perform Afterward

Poster Photo Credit: Ian Dickson // ian@late20thcenturyboy.com

Trailer Premieres on Pitchfork

Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones, Lemmy, Members of Sex Pistols, Pink Floyd, Guns ‘N’ Roses All Appear in Film

THE DAMNED: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead is filmmaker Wes Orshoski’s long-awaited documentary of British punk pioneers The Damned. The film will world premiere Wednesday March 18th at The Paramount Theatre in Austin as part of the 2015 South by Southwest Film & Music Festival. The Damned will attend the premiere and perform later that night at an official SXSW showcase at Mohawk.

Shot around the world over the past four years, the authorized film features appearances by Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Mick Jones (The Clash), Nick Mason (Pink Floyd), Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead), Duff McKagan (Guns ‘N’ Roses), Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi), Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), actor/comedian Fred Armisen, and more.
The world premiere is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. on March 18, and will be attended by the current line-up of the Damned, including founding members David Vanian and Captain Sensible.

The third prong in the holy trinity of English punk—alongside the Sex Pistols and The Clash—The Damned beat both in the race to be the first to put punk on wax: The Damned were the first U.K. punk band to release a single (1976’s essential “New Rose”) and album (1977’s iconic Damned Damned Damned) and they were the first to bring British punk to America, including a stop at New York’s hallowed CBGBs.

Weathering near fatal line-changes, The Damned went on to record hits in the new wave era (“Love Song” & “Smash It Up”) and registered a massive impact on the 1980s goth scene. The Damned is one of the only surviving band’s from punk’s first wave.

THE DAMNED: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead charts the band’s unique history and bitter infighting; it captures the band in the midst of a 35th anniversary tour in 2011 which estranged former members Rat Scabies and Brian James answered with their own anniversary tour. Meanwhile other former members reunite in the unlikeliest of places—a Welsh cancer ward; elsewhere, members of Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Melvins, T.S.O.L., Buzzcocks, Adverts and the Offspring detail the Damned’s role in setting fire to the dinosaur rock of the 1970s while sparking the punk movement in America.

THE DAMNED: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead is longtime journalist/ photographer Wes Orshoski’s follow-up to 2011’s Lemmy, the award-winning portrait of Motörhead legend Kilmister (which Orshoski co-directed/produced).

The Damned’s current line-up of Vanian, Sensible, keyboardist Monty Oxymoron, drummer Pinch and bassist Stu West will launch the film by appearing at the world premiere and with a performance at 11 p.m. that night (Weds. March 18) at Mohawak, on the first night of the SXSW Music Festival.

Family Jams featuring Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Vetiver DVD

THE FAMILY JAMS
featuring Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Vetiver,  + more
DVD and 52-Page Book coming April 21st via Factory 25

An evocative portrait of youthful possibility, THE FAMILY JAMS follows these artists as they tour the USA in 2004 playing their music for a growing audience.

"Family Jams may not ever attain the stature of, say, a concert film like D. A. Pennebaker's Don't Look Back. But it should, as a record of musicians in youthful flower,
sharing a loose, heartfelt camaraderie and lack of pretension. "
- Andy Webster, Critics Pick: New York Times

"A curiously effective musical docu that captures the raw dynamics of collective creativity... JAMS affords the opportunity to hang with gifted, genre-defying fringe
artists
at a pivotal point in their evolving careers."
- Steve Dollar, The Wall Street Journal

JOBRIATH A.D. on DVD

JOBRIATH was...
"The American David Bowie"
"Hype Of The Year"
"The True Fairy Of Rock And Roll"

Jobriath A.D. on DVD with an LP of NEVER BEFORE RELEASED
music from Jobriath's lost musical, "Popstar"
coming April 21st via Factory 25

"Neither for the ears of the elderly nor for those with middle-aged perspectives, Jobriath voiced the excess destitution of New York's most tormentedly aware, whose lives were favoured by darkness. Cinematic themes of desperate dramas in paranoid shadows were presented as choppy and carnivalesque melodies...Neither America nor England was quite ready. "
Morrissey
Factory 25 announces the release of director Kieran Turner's music documentary Jobriath A.D.
about seventies glam rock musician Jobriath, also known as "The American Bowie," "The True Fairy of Rock & Roll," and "Hype of the Year." The film, on DVD, will be packaged with an LP of unreleased music from Jobriath's lost musical, "Popstar".

The first openly gay rock star, Jobriath's reign was brief, lasting less than two years and two albums. Done in by a over-hyped publicity machine, shunned by the gay community, and dismissed by critics as all flash and no substance, Jobriath was excommunicated from the music business. He retreated to the Chelsea Hotel where he died, forgotten, in 1983 at the age of 37, as one of the earliest casualties of AIDS.

In the years since his death, new generations of fans have discovered his music through acts as diverse as Morrissey, Def Leppard, The Pet Shop Boys, and Gary Numan, all of whom have cited Jobriath as an influence. Through interviews, archival material, and animation, audiences can experience the heartbreaking and unbelievable story of the one, the only, Jobriath.

The film features narrator Henry Rollins (Black Flag) and interviews with Jobriath influenced artists: Marc Almond, Joey Arias, Jayne County, Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, Will Sheff of Okkervil River, and Justin Tranter of Semi Precious Weapons.

JOBRIATH A.D.: WRITEN & DIRECTED BY KIERAN TURNER; PRODUCED BY KIERAN TURNER; EDITED BY DANNY BRESNIK; CINEMATOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL CANZONIERO AND PJ GAYNARD; SOUND BY RACHEL CHANCEY, MUSIC BY IAN MOORE AND JASON STACZEK; NARRATED BY  HENRY ROLLINS

Style Wars, the Holy Grail of hip-hop films, on Blu-ray Nov 4th

STYLE WARS
Blu-ray release of the classic hip-hop documentary
Available on November 4th

"Tony Silver's 1983 documentary Style Wars portrays decades of social inequities and American art and culture through the prism of hip-hop."
- The Chronicle of Higher Education
Style Wars, the legendary hip-hop documentary and timeless film classic, the indispensable record of a golden age of youthful creativity and exploding hip hop subculture, will be available on Blu-ray on November 4th, 2014.

When director Tony Silver and co-producer Henry Chalfantdelivered the broadcast version of their prize-winning film to PBS in 1983, the world received its first full immersion in the phenomenon that had taken over New York City. The urban landscape was physically transformed by graffiti artists who invented a new visual language to express both their individuality, and the voice of their community.

In Style Wars, New York's ramshackle subway system is their public playground, battleground, and spectacular artistic canvas. As MC's, DJ's and B-boys rock the city with new sounds and new moves, we see street corner breakdance battles turn into performance art.

The soundtrack features classics performed by The Sugar Hill GangThe Treacherous Three,The Fearless FourGrand Master Flash and The Furious FiveTrouble FunkRammellzee / K-Rob and Dion. New York's kings of graffiti and b-boys own a special place in the hip hop pantheon. InStyle Wars they continue to empower new generations with the original spirit of hip hop, as it reached out from underground tunnels, from uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds, to the world at large

Bonus materials include:

The Outtakes, A brand new 40 min film culled from 30 hours of left over materials filled with hidden gems and fascinating moments never before seen.

B-Boy Showcase: is a montage of fast paced phenomenally acrobatic Rocksteady Crew at their tour launch party, in the studio, on the streets, and battling it out against Dynamic Rockers at the United Skates of America in Queens.

Style Wars In The Cutting Room: In the summer of '83 a camera crew visited Valkhn Films, an editing house where Style Wars was being painstakingly spliced together. This 25 min piece is a rare glimpse at the process of telling a real story as it's happening.

"Anybody who wants to understand what hip hop is all about needs to see a movie called Style Wars-- KRS-One

"A breakthrough documentary." -- A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"The Holy Grail of hip-hop movies." -- XLR8R

"Hip hop's Rosetta Stone." -- VIBE

Looking For Johnny - The Legend of Johnny Thunders

Looking For Johnny - The Legend of Johnny Thunders
Available October 14th via Digital Formats / DVD
and Soundtrack on CD and Limited Edition Red Vinyl (2 LP)

A documentary on the life of the late New York Dolls and Heartbreakers guitarist
Chip Baker Films in association with Jungle Recordsand MVD Entertainment Group presents a Danny Garciafilm.

Johnny Thunders was the legendary hard-living rock'n'roll guitarist who inspired glam-metal, punk and the music scene in general. Looking For Johnny is a 90-minute film that documents Thunders' career from his beginnings to his tragic death in 1991.

When Johnny Thunders died in New Orleans on April 23rd 1991, he left behind a mystery. Though MTV and international broadsheets reported the guitarist's demise, for many in the mainstream, Thunders was perceived as an enigmatic outlaw. He was adored by a legion of devotees and cited as an influence by at least three successive generations of musicians. Thunders refused to play the corporate game and was both elevated and damned for it.
Looking for Johnny is the creation of the documentary maker, Danny Garcia (The Rise & Fall of The Clash). The young Spanish filmmaker was seized by a question that wouldn't let go - "just who was Johnny Thunders?" He spent 18 months travelling across the USA and Europe, filming interviews with fifty of the people who were closest to Johnny, building a compelling narrative drawn from first hand testimonies.
The film examines Johnny Thunders' career from the early 70's as a founding member of the influentialNew York Dolls, the birth of the punk scene with The Heartbreakers in both New York City and London, and later incarnations including Gang War and The Oddballs. It also explores Johnny's unique musical style, his personal battle with drugs and theories on the circumstances of his death in a New Orleans hotel in 1991 at age 38.

Interviewees include Sylvain Sylvain, Lenny Kaye, Walter Lure, Billy Rath, Bob Gruen, Terry Chimes, Alan Vega, Peter Perrett, Sami Yaffa, three of his late managers (Marty Thau, Leee Black Childers and Malcolm McLaren), and many others.
The film includes forty songs (including Born To Lose and You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory) and historic film of Johnny with live performances from all periods, including unseen New York Dolls and Heartbreakers footage and photos. Cult filmmakers Bob Gruen, Don Letts, Patrick Grandperret, Rachael Amadeo and others contribute classic archive footage, helping illustrate the charisma, chaos and heartbreak inherent to the guitarist.

Premiere showings took place in May and June 2014 across USA and Europe, including New York City, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Stockholm, New Orleans, Dallas, Toronto, Boston, Washington DC, Gloucester MA, San Francisco, Madrid, Barcelona and elsewhere, with more events to follow.

Muscle Shoals screening

Ponderosa Stomp Foundation, Picture Palace Pictures and CAC present
A Clandestine Celluloid screening of Muscle Shoals
Thursday, October 3rd with Special Guest Spooner Oldham

”Rising out of the Deep South of 1960s America, a sound emerged that began to attract artists as diverse as Otis Redding, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones. That sound, and the people who helped create it, would go on to leave its mark on music history. The place was Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and this is the story of how it gave birth to some of the most memorable music of our time.” From the documentary Muscle Shoals, a 2013 Magnolia Pictures release

The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation, Picture Palace Pictures and the Contemporary Arts Center present a Clandestine Celluloid screening of the acclaimed new documentary Muscle Shoals, with a performance by special guest Spooner Oldham. The film, chronicling the legendary recording studios where hundreds of hits were created will screen Thursday, October 3rd at the Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp Street in the warehouse district of New Orleans, as part of the Ponderosa Stomp Festival. Doors open at 6:30, the film begins at 7pm. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for CAC Members and Ponderosa Stomp Music History Conference attendees.

There will be a short introduction by Clandestine Celluloid producer Madeleine Molyneaux and Oldham, a 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, will perform a short solo set following the screening. "Clandestine Celluloid is honored to present the Louisiana premiere of one of the year’s best films, in the presence of one of the film's most distinctive subjects, Spooner Oldham. The award-winning Muscle Shoals is a deeply felt love letter and road-trip tone poem to the sound and the spirit of collaboration across social, racial and sonic distinctions,” explained Molyneaux.

The story of Muscle Shoals, Alabama is essentially the story of two recording studios (Fame and Muscle Shoals Sound) and the music –and music legends-- that left an indelible mark on both a small backwater town and on popular culture and music. The film deftly chronicles the sounds (“Mustang Sally”, “Wild Horses”, “I Never Loved A Man”) as well as the legends who recorded there –from Wilson Pickett to Bob Dylan, Lynryd Skynrd to the Staple Singers, and hidden sonic instigators, many interviewed or appearing in performance, including Rick Hall, The Swampers, Gregg Allman, Mick Jagger, Spooner Oldham, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Keith Richards, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Cliff, Alicia Keys, and Bono among others. Also featured: Dan Penn, Donna Jean Godchaux, Donnie Fritts, W.C. Handy, Sam Phillips, Earl Montgomery.

Muscle Shoals also provides a powerful endorsement of the way the town, the studio and the sound transcended the realities of Southern racial politics, as relationships were forged with black and white musicians and musical styles, before and after the Civil Rights Era.

Directed by Greg “Freddy” Camalier, Muscle Shoals is his first foray into filmmaking. A former commercial real estate agent from Boulder, CO, Camalier teamed up with his old friend (and the film’s producer) Stephen Badger for a ‘Southern Route” road trip a few years back, stumbling one late night onto Muscle Shoals without realizing just how significant the town had been to forging the sound of music they both loved. Stephen Badger had in the past attended the Ponderosa Stomp and was inspired to hear Rick Hall and others speak about the “sound” and its significance.  Camalier in Rolling Stone: "The coming together of races at that time, as well as the landscape and this rural, beautiful town, as well as the singing river, as well as these incredible characters and all the other musicians down there – it all sort of came together."
