Muscle Shoals screening

Ponderosa Stomp Foundation, Picture Palace Pictures and CAC present
A Clandestine Celluloid screening of Muscle Shoals
Thursday, October 3rd with Special Guest Spooner Oldham

”Rising out of the Deep South of 1960s America, a sound emerged that began to attract artists as diverse as Otis Redding, Paul Simon, Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones. That sound, and the people who helped create it, would go on to leave its mark on music history. The place was Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and this is the story of how it gave birth to some of the most memorable music of our time.” From the documentary Muscle Shoals, a 2013 Magnolia Pictures release

The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation, Picture Palace Pictures and the Contemporary Arts Center present a Clandestine Celluloid screening of the acclaimed new documentary Muscle Shoals, with a performance by special guest Spooner Oldham. The film, chronicling the legendary recording studios where hundreds of hits were created will screen Thursday, October 3rd at the Contemporary Arts Center, 900 Camp Street in the warehouse district of New Orleans, as part of the Ponderosa Stomp Festival. Doors open at 6:30, the film begins at 7pm. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $8 for CAC Members and Ponderosa Stomp Music History Conference attendees.

There will be a short introduction by Clandestine Celluloid producer Madeleine Molyneaux and Oldham, a 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, will perform a short solo set following the screening. "Clandestine Celluloid is honored to present the Louisiana premiere of one of the year’s best films, in the presence of one of the film's most distinctive subjects, Spooner Oldham. The award-winning Muscle Shoals is a deeply felt love letter and road-trip tone poem to the sound and the spirit of collaboration across social, racial and sonic distinctions,” explained Molyneaux.

The story of Muscle Shoals, Alabama is essentially the story of two recording studios (Fame and Muscle Shoals Sound) and the music –and music legends-- that left an indelible mark on both a small backwater town and on popular culture and music. The film deftly chronicles the sounds (“Mustang Sally”, “Wild Horses”, “I Never Loved A Man”) as well as the legends who recorded there –from Wilson Pickett to Bob Dylan, Lynryd Skynrd to the Staple Singers, and hidden sonic instigators, many interviewed or appearing in performance, including Rick Hall, The Swampers, Gregg Allman, Mick Jagger, Spooner Oldham, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin, Keith Richards, Clarence Carter, Jimmy Cliff, Alicia Keys, and Bono among others. Also featured: Dan Penn, Donna Jean Godchaux, Donnie Fritts, W.C. Handy, Sam Phillips, Earl Montgomery.

Muscle Shoals also provides a powerful endorsement of the way the town, the studio and the sound transcended the realities of Southern racial politics, as relationships were forged with black and white musicians and musical styles, before and after the Civil Rights Era.

Directed by Greg “Freddy” Camalier, Muscle Shoals is his first foray into filmmaking. A former commercial real estate agent from Boulder, CO, Camalier teamed up with his old friend (and the film’s producer) Stephen Badger for a ‘Southern Route” road trip a few years back, stumbling one late night onto Muscle Shoals without realizing just how significant the town had been to forging the sound of music they both loved. Stephen Badger had in the past attended the Ponderosa Stomp and was inspired to hear Rick Hall and others speak about the “sound” and its significance.  Camalier in Rolling Stone: "The coming together of races at that time, as well as the landscape and this rural, beautiful town, as well as the singing river, as well as these incredible characters and all the other musicians down there – it all sort of came together."

Filmmaker Examines The Legend of Zelda

Filmmaker Examines The Legend of Zelda

and Its Cultural Influence In New Documentary

Players of the Legend of Zelda games have grown up to become creatives, and evidence of their lasting admiration of the series is often found in their work. Beyond the Veil Productions announces: It's Dangerous To Go Alone...The Movie, which will look at the impact the series has had on the arts, culture, and entertainment of the last 25 years.
Sarasota filmmaker, Joe Granato has launched a Kickstarter campaign for "It's Dangerous To Go Alone...The Movie," a documentary that will examine the ubiquity and cultural influence of one of Nintendo's most iconic franchises, The Legend of Zelda. Through its own adventure story narrative, the film will explore the works of a generation of artists whose first impetus for creativity was found while saving Zelda's fantasy world of Hyrule.
Keeping true to the spirit of the series, the filmmaker has announced that one method of distribution for the film will be in game form. On the project's Kickstarter, a video shows an early draft of a unique adventure game being played on an iPad. The evolution of this will become a full game where a player will navigate a fantastic world in search of segments of the documentary, bonus material, and behind the scenes footage. For those looking for a more linear method of viewing, traditional distribution is also planned.
The film's website, http://www.TheZeldaMovie.com, is also a homage to the 8-bit era of gaming and the original NES Zelda game. The site's method of navigation is its own pixelated adventure, which features some of the film's interviewees as NPC helpers. By beating the web game, the player is rewarded with a two-minute look at coverage of the Symphony of the Goddesses (a four movement symphony based on Zelda music) concert in Miami, FL.

Bob Dylan & The Band "Down In The Flood" DVD

Bob Dylan & The Band "Down In The Flood"
Comes to DVD on September 25

The Story Of Bob Dylan & The Band

Features exclusive new interviews with Garth Hudson, Ronnie Hawkins,
band producer John Simon & tour drummer Mickey Jones

Trailer

In 1966 Bob Dylan began his first electric world tour. It was a landmark moment, both for Dylan and for the history of rock music, and it bitterly divided his audience.

Backing Dylan on stage was an obscure group of Canadian musicians collectively known as The Hawks. In the months following the tour they would join Dylan during a lengthy convalescence in New York's Catskill Mountains; when both parties re-emerged, Dylan had undergone an artistic transformation that sent ripples across American music and The Hawks had become simply 'The Band', one of the most important recording groups of their generation.

This is the story of the relationship between Dylan and The Band, the legendary amateur recordings that they made together in Woodstock, their re-invention of American music and their continued albeit sporadic relationship during the 1970s.

Featuring new interviews with Garth Hudson;  Band producer John Simon; The Hawks' 66 tour drummer, Mickey Jones; the man who assembled and tutored the Hawks and from whom they took their name, Ronnie Hawkins; Dylan guitarist, Charlie McCoy; Band biographer Barney Hoskyns; Basement Tapes Archivist, Sid Griffin, Isis magazine's Derek Barker and Rolling Stone's Anthony De Curtis.

Also features rare footage, archive interviews, seldom seen photographs and the music that changed the world, all at once making for the finest program on this element of Bob Dylan and The Band's respective and communal careers yet to emerge.

Circle Jerks "My Career As A Jerk" DVD

Circle Jerks "My Career As A Jerk"
To Be Released on DVD September 25

I was a participant on a very long musical adventure through all the fun and miserable times and thinking about this I don't know if i'd change any of it!
- Keith Morris

MVD Entertainment Group
From the beginning, LA punk band the CIRCLE JERKS were rooted in controversy. Formed by ex members of Black Flag and Red Cross (now Redd Kross) in late 1979, the band came to encapsulate the image, sound and energy of California Hardcore Punk.

Filmmaker David Markey (1991: The Year Punk Broke, The Slog Movie) mixes in-depth interviews, rare live footage and historical perspective to illustrate the story of one of the most influential bands in the American underground.

"I was at many of these shows, and let me tell you, there wasn't a tighter band in Los Angeles at the time," said Markey. "Making this film reminded me just how truly great they were."

My Career as a Jerk follows the band from their early days and classic debut to navigating the independent label and touring scene of the 80s to the addictions, fights and injuries that forced their break up.

Of course the story doesn't quite end there...

Features interviews with members Keith Morris, Greg Hetson, Lucky Leher. Earl Liberty, Zander Schloss as well as J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr), Henry Rollins (Black Flag), Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Bad Religion), and more.

Bonus Materials include: Deleted Scenes and Bonus Interviews

50th Anniversaries of Beatles and Muhammad Ali

50th Anniversaries of Beatles and Muhammad Ali Commemorated in Newly Released Documentaries on DVD

The Beatles: Their Golden Age

Ali: The Man, The Moves, The Mouth

In commemoration of the 50th anniversaries for the Beatles and Ali, Music Video Distributors (MVD) has announced the release of two documentaries on DVD: The Beatles: Their Golden Age (one hour, $9.95) and Ali: The Man, The Moves, The Mouth (one hour, $9.95). The Ali DVD documentary is narrated by one of boxing's most-acclaimed sportscasters, Bert Sugar, and is one of his last works before his death in March.

In August of 1962, Ringo Starr replaced drummer Pete Best in an English band that few Americans knew of then, completing what would soon be the biggest entertainment act in history, the Beatles. Soon after, young Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali) began training for his biggest fight to date, a bout with the former heavyweight champion of the world, Floyd Patterson, who he would defeat handily when they met the following month. The news crews of the day couldn't get enough of the two events, and those unassuming, yet ballyhooed beginnings changed popular culture and sports forever!

MVD Entertainment Group
The Ali documentary is based on a book of like title by Les Krantz, who also produced the documentary.  In it, are highlights of all of Ali's biggest fights, including "The Fight of the Century," in 1971, in which two undefeated heavyweight champions, Ali and Joe Frazier, amazed fans with their stamina and tenacity.

Ali, the dethroned heavyweight champion, had lost his boxing license earlier when he refused to be inducted as a draftee into the U.S. Army. With Ali absent, Frazier had won the championship in 1970. You'll witness Frazier beat Ali in the 1971 bout in this documentary, but, in their rematch, "The Thrilla in Manilla," Ali came back to win over Frazier. Both matches are on the DVD. Hyping the rematch, Ali states on camera, "It'll be a thrilla and a killa and a chilla when I get the Gorilla in Manilla." Also included is "The Rumble in Jungle" in Zaire where Ali retook the championship, defeating George Foreman.

Lots of rare footage distinguishes this documentary from other films about Ali's career. "Most Americans today don't realize that Ali spent a lot of time in Britain in the beginning of his boxing career," Krantz  said. "We used some superb footage of Ali shot over in England where he had some early professional fights." The Brits were curious about this outspoken black man whose brash style was not what British TV viewers were used to seeing. "The British footage is why our documentary has a bit of a different look than other Ali films," Krantz said, "so it has a lot of Ali footage that most Americans haven't seen." In addition to highlights of fights with Englishmen Henry Cooper and Joe Bugner, Ali offers plenty of his amusing quips in the documentary.

Ali's rhetoric was colorful. "I'm the King!" he shouts in one scene shot in London, as he hyped a fight. "You got a queen, but you ain't got no King! I'm the King!" Almost as colorful as Ali is the documentary's narrator Bert Sugar who perpetually wore a trademark fedora hat and almost always had a fat cigar he'd wiggle at you. Sugar had a special relationship with Ali. In order to make his calls better when he covered an Ali fight, the sportscaster once sparred with the Ali . . . just to learn what it might be like. When he spoke of it, he'd raise his fists to demonstrate how he jabbed at Ali and he'd bob and weave like a prize fighter as he gave his account. "Seeing Bert, with his 'dukes up,' ready to poke you," Krantz said, "was an intimidating experience, even though he was seventy something when he did with me."

"You can't imagine what a thrill it was for me, " producer  Krantz said, "to work on back-to-back documentaries of the heroes of my youth, Ali and the Beatles."

MVD Entertainment Group
The latter work, The Beatles: Their Golden Age, tells the story of the Beatles from their beginning in 1960s, thru Ringo joining the group in 1962, to the very end in 1970 when the Beatles broke up. In addition to their world tours, the documentary has highlights of their movies, all five of them. You'll witness them dancing and singing their way across the screen, including a portion on the making of their first movie, A Hard Day's Night. Also included are scenes from Help!, Yellow Submarine, Magical Mystery Tour, and Let it Be.

Not every scene in the Beatles documentary is as familiar as the boys' movies. Rare footage in Krantz's documentary include John Lennon reading his from his poetry book; Paul McCartney angrily lecturing a newsman about revealing his LSD usage;  George Harrison batting his eyes at his new wife Patty Boyd, and Ringo clowning around in the Irish countryside with the other Beatles. "We liked to show a side of the boys that was seldom very public," Krantz said. The famous scenes are here too:  a repentant John explaining his remark that the group was "bigger than Jesus;" the Beatles arriving in London as they returned from their world tour, and their triumphant return to their hometown, Liverpool.

MVD Entertainment Group
The newly released DVD documentary, The Beatles: Their Golden Age, (one hour, from MVD, $9.95,) commemorates the 50th anniversary of when the Beatles, as we know them now, became complete on August 18, 1962-the day Ringo Starr formally joined John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, who formed the group in 1960. The group, with Ringo, became the most popular entertainment act in history.

SAUL BASS ON FILM!

SAUL BASS ON FILM! (DAY ONE):
Commercials, Titles, Shorts and Rarities

Saturday, June 23rd | 5:30pm

“Saul Bass wasn’t just an artist who contributed to the first several minutes of some of the greatest movies in history -- in my opinion his body of work qualifies him as one of the best filmmakers of one of this, or any other time.“ - Steven Spielberg

Whether you realize it or not, you’ve been touched by and have admired designer/filmmaker Saul Bass -- his striking work is ubiquitous to the modern eye, and his name has become synonymous with graphic design. You’ve frequently taken in his elegant, striking logos, from the AT&T “death star” to the silhouetted Girl Scout cookie sisters. He single-handedly reinvented the movie title sequence (Vertigo, West Side Story, Exodus and Goodfellas? All Bass creations), illustrated the most stylistically influential movie posters, and probably created the best film sequence Hitchcock ever directed -- yes, the shower scene from Psycho. Yet an equally brilliant area of his work remains vastly underseen: commercials, whimsical educational and industrial films, a fantastical Ray Bradbury adaptation, and Phase IV, one of the most visually striking sci-fi features from the genre’s Seventies golden age. With precise efficiency, Bass (with his wife/collaborator Elaine) communicated enormous feeling and information into the smallest of spaces, making him not only of our greatest designers or filmmakers -- but one of the great eyes of the 20th century. With a big thank you to the Academy Film Archive and Jennifer Bass, tonight’s program includes the lecture documentary Bass on Titles, a selection of Bass’ rare commercials, excerpts from his industrial films, The Searching Eye (created for the 1964 World’s Fair), his beloved pull-out-all-stops Why Man Creates, and more!
Archival film materials courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.

Watch excerpts from Bass opening credits sequences, plus excerpts from some of the films to be screened!

The Hundred In The Hands "Keep It Low"

The Hundred In The Hands Share Andy Stott Remix,
Announce North American Tour Dates

Check Out Andy Stott’s Remix of “Keep It Low” HERE

Upcoming North American Tour Dates

5/15 - Brooklyn, NY - Glasslands

6/14 – Toronto, ON – Wrong Bar (NXNE w/Purity Ring)

6/15 – Chicago, IL – Empty Bottle

6/18 – Philadelphia, PA – Kung Fu Necktie

6/19 – Washington, DC – Rock & Roll Hotel

6/26 – San Francisco, CA – Rickshaw Stop

6/27 – Los Angeles, CA – The Echo

* More dates to be announced soon

The Hundred In The Hands is releasing their new album RED NIGHT on June 12th via Warp Records, and today the band has shared Andy Stott’s ethereal remix of their single “Keep It Low.” The remix swells with added bass and percussion, which Stott transposes against Eleanore Everdell’s transfixing vocals throughout. It can be found on the 12-inch “Keep It Low” single, which includes an original B-side (“Mountains”), and additional remixes from JD Twitch, who turns in two great Optimo reworks. The single will see a release on May 28th via Warp Records as well. The band is also announcing a handful of North American tour dates, including an album preview show at Brooklyn’s Glasslands tomorrow, where they’ll be debuting new material from RED NIGHT live for the first time.

Of the Andy Stott remix, the band says, “We were listening to Andy Stott’s “Passed Me By” and “We Stay Together” EP’s a lot as we started the record. So many good ideas and textures, with low end in the extreme that kind of rattled our minds a bit. When it came to looking for people to remix, he was first on the list.”

RED NIGHT is a self-produced meditation on separation and reunion, love nearly lost and the long night back to it; a chronicle of late-hour pining awash in digital glow and urban buzzing. Album opener “Empty Stations” begins with a haunting string arrangement that is overtaken by a propulsive rhythm and Eleanore’s spellbinding vocal turns. “Come With Me” guitar stabs, icy keyboard, and polyrhythm underscore the lyrical siren’s call. The heart broken vocal on “Faded” wraps itself around the spiraling bell and fragile arrangements to devastating effect.

The goth R&B monster “Stay the Night” is a tale of yearning with a seductive slowed-down groove. The vast soundscapes of “Lead In The Light” start out sparse and build to an otherworldly climax and then back down again. RED NIGHT is an opportunity to enter the winding tunnels of The Hundred in the Hands’ nocturnal city where time stretches, tempos drop, and guitars plunge rumbling and throbbing out against denser and denser vocals as the story unfolds. The band’s boundary-pushing sound is unafraid to marry minimalism and abstraction with big melodies.

ABOUT CITIZEN TWAIN

Val Kilmer will present his one man play, Citizen Twain, in a limited run at The Historic Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery over just two weekends this March.

"The recent news of my death has been greatly exaggerated." - Mark Twain

Created and performed by acclaimed actor Val Kilmer, and seen recently in development by sold out audiences in venues in Los Angeles such as Disney Concert Hall, Tim Robbins' The Actors' Gang, and The United States Veterans Artists' Alliance Hall, Mr. Kilmer's production delves into the heart and soul of Samuel Clemens and conjures forth the great spirit of Mark Twain, America's greatest storyteller.

Deeply entertaining, with great wit, song and prose, the play weaves Twain's biographical themes into a play that proclaims and takes joy in the marvel of words, which, as Twain says in the play, "Form the ladder to my heaven." Storytelling was a lifeline for Twain, and in Kilmer's Citizen Twain, this lifeline continues into and after Twain's death, making it an appropriate choice to perform the show in The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
