Established in 1960, Tower Records was once a retail powerhouse
with 200 stores, in 30 countries, on five continents. From humble
beginnings in a small-town drugstore, Tower Records eventually became
the heart and soul of the music world, and a powerful force in the music
industry. In 1999, Tower Records made an astounding $1 billion. In
2006, the company filed for bankruptcy. What went wrong? Everyone thinks
they know what killed Tower Records: The Internet. But that's not the
story.
Directed by Colin Hanks, and featuring music icons like Dave Grohl, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, All Things Must Pass
is a feature documentary film examining this iconic company's explosive
trajectory, tragic demise, and legacy forged by its rebellious founder
Russ Solomon. For seven years, Hanks took on the documentary that
lamented and celebrated the Sacramento-based record store that grew from
his hometown into an American retail powerhouse.
"I remember buying 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was the informative record for me on my musical path, which I bought at Tower Records," he said.

MVD Entertainment Group furthers the distribution of Arrow Video in the US with two new titles...
Wake Up And Kill (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray + DVD] coming November 24
"An important step in the evolution of Lizzani's crime cinema." - Giallo Fever
During the 1960s Luciano Lutring committed more than one hundred armed robberies in Italy and on the French Riviera. To the media he was the 'machine gun soloist', a name he'd earned as he kept his weapon in a violin case. To the public he was a romantic figure, one who only targeted the wealthy, stealing more than 35 billion lire during his criminal career.
Wake Up and Kill was the logical extension of such fame. It became the first feature to commit Lutring's story to celluloid, shooting having begun mere months after his eventual arrest. Capitalizing on the breakthrough success of his performance in French television's The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Robert Hoffmann is perfect as Lutring, bringing just the right amount of charisma and youthful exuberance to his first major big screen role.
Directed by Carlo Lizzani (Requiescant), scored by Ennio Morricone, penned by the future screenwriter of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, and featuring that film's star, Gian Maria Volonté, in a key supporting role, Wake Up and Kill's true-crime thrills serve as an enthralling dry run for the poliziotteschi movies that would follow a few years later.

What Have You Done To Solange? [BLU-RAY + DVD] coming December 15
"An accomplished film that should keep even the most hardened of giallo fanatics guessing until the very end." - Flickering Myth
From director Massimo Dallamano, cinematographer on both A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, comes giallo classic What Have You Done to Solange?, the debut feature of actress Camille Keaton (I Spit on Your Grave). A sexually sadistic killer is preying on the girls of St. Mary's school. Student Elizabeth witnessed one of the murders, but her hazy recollections of a knife-wielding figure in black do nothing to further the police's investigations. Why is the killer choosing these young women? And what does it have to do with a girl named Solange? Also starring Cristina Galbo (Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue) and Fabio Testi (I Spit On Your Grave), What Have You Done with Solange? features all the hallmarks of classic gialli - the amateur detective, the black-gloved killer - as well as a lush score from Ennio Morricone.

Adam Ant "The Blueblack Hussar"
In-depth documentary coming to on DVD and digital platforms in the US
on October 16th
"Jack Bond's intriguingly unguarded fly-on-the-Ant-wall doc finds Adam himself a mite stomped-on by mental health issues and music-biz vagaries." - The Guardian
|
![]()
This Sunrise Pictures production was described as, "Amazing and wonderful", by Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and, "Up there with Pennebaker and the Maysles Brothers", by Sam Dunn, BFI. The film's Director, the renowned Jack Bond, captures this true icon's extraordinary and brave comeback, after years of mental health problems. The 99 minute film comes packaged with bonus features like rare live performance footage, and a Q&A with Jack Bond hosted by journalist John Robb. The trailer can be seen here:http://youtu.be/lZ2d3TwWVLo
The Blueblack Hussar is Adam's latest persona and, so emboldened, he embarks on his first tour for 15 years with a new backing band, 'The Good, the Mad and the Lovely Posse'. For the first time since his Punk roots, Adam is captured playing with a young, hungry band, and collaborating with the likes of Boz Boorer (Morrissey, The Pole Cats, etc). The film includes electrifying live performances, starting at London's 100 Club and culminating at Hyde Park, before an audience of 55,000. Jack Bond's 'fly on the wall' direction includes intimate scenes of Adam at home, backstage and even getting a new tattoo. The film exposes Adam's complex personality through the characters he interacts with on his journey, who include Amy Winehouse producer, Mark Ronson, Jamie Reynolds of The Klaxons and the legendary Pop Artist Allen Jones ('A Clockwork Orange'), Adam's art student days' mentor.
The film takes in the atmosphere pervading Adam's life in London, including that explosive show at the 100 Club. The Blueblack Hussar also follows his escape to Paris to record with his 'Bardoesque' backing singer, Twinkle and the enigmatic film star, Charlotte Rampling, who inspired his first album, 'Dirk Wears White Sox'. Jack Bond, one of Britain's most innovative directors, returns to the Cinema Verité roots of his ground-breaking 1965 film, 'Dali in New York' to portray the creative talent of Adam Ant, another 'mad genius'.
Jack Bond himself is an English Director/Producer of feature films and television documentaries, including films on Salvador Dali, Roald Dahl, Patricia Highsmith, Werner Herzog and The Pet Shop Boys. Three of his feature films: 'Separation', 'Anticlock' and 'The Other Side of the Underneath' have been re-released on DVD and Blu-ray by the BFI. Jack Bond is to be the subject of a biography by Kirk Lake ('There Will Be Rainbows', a biography of Rufus Wainwright) and is currently working on a new feature film.
The Blueblack Hussar is an honest - at times excruciatingly so - portrait of a troubled, but ultimately triumphant natural talent. The years may have marched on but Adam Ant, as this unflinching film proves beyond doubt, remains a true star.
Bonus Materials include:
Live performance of 'Whip in My Valise' at The Scala, London
Live performance of 'Young Parisians' duet with Boy George
Live performance of 'Deutsche Girls' at the Electric Ballroom, London
Q&A Jack Bond and journalist John Robb

I Need A Dodge: Joe Strummer On The Run
Coming to the US on October 16th
"Poignant doc... A snapshot of a man - not a rock star -
looking for catharsis in the most unlikely of places." - NME
|
![]()
Produced and Directed by Nick Hall, this is the story of Joe Strummer's self-imposed exile in Granada in 1985/6. It will be released on DVD by MVD on October 16th and comes packaged with a cassette of a Spanish radio interview with Strummer, a postcard, sticker, and pin.
"This is Joe Strummer at a crossroads in his professional and personal life. Initially his trips to Spain seemed to be little more than an anecdote but this story says so much about Joe coming to terms with life after The Clash," said Hall.
Johnny Green, The Clash's legendary road manager said of the film, "I glowed - I felt uplifted. Once again, it was as if I had spent a little time with my dear lost friend, Joe Strummer. I was hooked all through - the story is compulsive. More to the point, you have perfectly captured the brooding melancholia, that shy underside, which was a compelling component of Ol' Joe. I Need A Dodge is fabulous." The film also received a special mention at the In-Edit Festival in Barcelona.
Heading to Spain in 1985 to flee the disaster that was the implosion of The Clash version two, the band formed in the wake of Strummer firing Mick Jones and aftre Topper Headon left the band. The new line-up's Cut The Crap album had largely been shunned by both critics and the public alike andStrummer needed space. Telling a Diario De Granada interviewer that he had come "to feel the pain of the wound," upon arrival in Granada, Strummer found himself firmly subsumed into the city's musical and cultural fabric. He was welcomed with open arms by local acts 091 and bigger-fish Radio Fortuna, who all met up at the Silbar.
"When we met Joe it was like a miraculous apparition," said Jose Ignacio Lapido, 091's guitarist. It was Radio Fortuna who facilitated the purchase of a set of wheels for Strummer. Tracking down a Barreiros, essentially a European edition of the Dodge-Dart, became a mission. As Santiago Auseron, the Radio Fortuna singer said, "It looked cool, it just looked a bit mad. Which at that time suited Joe very well."
Strummer was delighted with the huge car which he thrashed around the streets of Granada and Madrid. However, having parked the car in the capital when he flew back to the UK for the birth of his daughter Lola, he forgot where it was and never saw it again. I Need A Dodge! Joe Strummer On The Run is partly the story of the search for the car, and partly the story of Strummer's own search for meaning and redemption in those wilderness years.
Strummer launched an unsuccessful attempt to find the car, making an appeal for information on Spain's Radio 3 in 1997. With witnesses disagreeing on the colour and style of the car - agreeing only that it was registered in Oviendo - and some claiming never to have seen it, filmmaker Nick Hall's quest seems unlikely to succeed, yet his investigation does unearth the truth about this period of Strummer's life that has largely been ignored.
Installing himself in the producer's chair for the recording of 091's album, Strummer's micro-management led, rather than to the boost these star-struck musicians were hoping for, to a growing sense of disquiet and wasted studio time. The album eventually surfaced, having finished off to the record label's specification rather than the band's, and was disappointing.
The Dodge is an emblem for Strummer's time in Spain, his ambition, personal style and, in a way, the nature of those troubled days in general. When he is pulled over by the police, it is revealed that he doesn't even have a license to drive. Drawing on the recollections of his friends in London and in Spain, his partner Gaby Holford, and the members of 091 and Radio Fortuna, this a revealing story of a search for much more than just a car.
"It was an escape. He was a man on the run. He was getting away from the tension in London," saysSantiago Auseron.
Joe Strummer did, indeed, need a Dodge.

Soaked In Bleach coming to DVD on August 14th
Benjamin Statler's groundbreaking docudrama explores the controversial death of Kurt Cobain |
Soaked In Bleach , a docudrama by Benjamin Statler , reveals the events behind Kurt Cobain's death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband (Kurt Cobain) only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain's death was ruled a suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound), but doubts have circulated for twenty years as to the legitimacy of this ruling, especially due to the work of Mr. Grant, a former L.A. County Sheriff's detective, who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations, interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artifacts from the 1994 case.
Statler says, " Half of the film is cinematic recreations of Tom Grant's investigation in 94' incorporating actual audio recordings, while the other half of the film is interviews with Tom Grant and some of the world's top experts in the respective areas of the case. The recreations served the purpose of helping people to see how the investigation actually unfolded and to better appreciate the context of certain situations. The interviews provide the objective scientific facts involved in the case of Kurt Cobain's death and back up what Tom Grant has been saying for 20 plus years."
Soaked In Bleach is Benjamin Statler's directorial debut. He also wrote and produced the film under his production company Montani Productions He has been the executive producer on such projects as fan favorite Comic Con Episode 4: A Fan's Hope and the fact-based Navy Seal thriller Act Of Valor.
Soaked In Bleach , is the first in a trilogy of docudramas to be produced by Montani Productions. Ben will also be producing and directing other projects with Montani, which primarily will be based on true life stories.
