Two FRANK ZAPPA BOOKS Set For Release This Fall

TWO FRANK ZAPPA BOOKS SET FOR RELEASE THIS FALL:

'ZAPPA GEAR: THE UNIQUE GUITARS, AMPLIFIERS, EFFECTS UNITS, KEYBOARDS AND STUDIO EQUIPMENT'
BY MICK EKERS WITH FOREWORD BY DWEEZIL ZAPPA
OUT NOVEMBER 29

'THE HOT RATS BOOK'
BY BILL GUBBINS AND AHMET ZAPPA
DUE DECEMBER 15

The Zappa Trust has announced the release of two books honoring legendary musician and composer Frank Zappa's legacy: ZAPPA GEAR: THE UNIQUE GUITARS, AMPLIFIERS, EFFECTS UNITS, KEYBOARDS AND STUDIO EQUIPMENT by Mick Ekers with foreword by Dweezil Zappa and THE HOT RATS BOOK, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Frank Zappa's HOT RATS album by Bill Gubbins and Ahmet Zappa.

"These books provide another way for fans to connect with Frank Zappa," Ahmet Zappa says. "They give a fascinating window into Frank's mind and the ideas he came up with throughout his career."

First up, the November 29 release of Zappa Gear: The Unique Guitars, Amplifiers, Effects Units, Keyboards and Studio Equipment by Mick Ekers with the foreword by Dweezil ZappaZappa Gear offers an unprecedented inside look at the machinery behind the legendary music. In addition to a detailed presentation of the equipment, Zappa Gear also introduces some of the pioneering inventors, engineers, and entrepreneurs without whom the instruments would not exist. Frank Zappa was an unremitting musical innovator and experimenter, always looking for ways to exploit the latest advances in technology. His working life coincided with the explosive development of music technology that ran from the 1960s through the following three decades. Without such inventions as the Marshall amplifier, the Gibson SG, the wah-wah pedal, and the Synclavier--much of it modified to Zappa's requirements and used in ways for which they had never been designed--Zappa's "air sculptures," as his music has been described, would have had a significantly different shape and texture. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes over 180 unique photographs of Frank Zappa's guitars and equipment taken by the author at Zappa's UMRK studio in Los Angeles. Zappa Gear is an official Frank Zappa book produced and written with the full cooperation and endorsement of Gail Zappa and the Zappa Family Trust.

The following month will see the release of The Hot Rats Book by Bill Gubbins and Ahmet Zappa, out December 15To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the much-loved Hot Rats LP, Ahmet Zappa and the Zappa Trust have teamed with Backbeat Books and Bill Gubbins, the only photographer to document the Hot Rats sessions, to create The Hot Rats Book, a deluxe, commemorative book packed with never before-seen photos and an interview between Ahmet and Gubbins documenting the Hot Rats sessions and last U.S. show of the original Mothers of Invention on August 10, 1969 at Cleveland's Musicarnival in Warrensville Heights, Ohio. "A movie for your ears" is how rock icon Frank Zappa first described his album Hot Rats, which remains, 50 years after its release, not only one of Zappa's most critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums, but a stunning tour-de-force of the totality of his musical genius and legendary skills as a composer, lyricist, producer, arranger, studio innovator and virtuoso guitar player. The Hot Rats Book is an official Frank Zappa book produced and written with the full cooperation and endorsement of the Zappa Trust.

Adam Green Exhibition Opening At Morrison Hotel Sept. 26th At 7PM, Guy Eppel Photography

Adam Green Exhibition Opening At Morrison Hotel Sept. 26th At 7PM, Guy Eppel Photography

Engine of Paradise LP Out Now Via 30th Century Records

///OPENING ALERT/// THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 26th at 7 PM

HONOR BY HONEST, HE FELL DOWN UPON US
Adam Green, the Minor Love years
A collection of photographs by Guy Eppel
Morrisson Hotel Gallery 116 Prince Street, 2nd Floor New York, NY 10012
In life there are normally only a sprinkling of subjects who stop you in your tracks. To make you think, this person is one of a kind & spending time with them and photographing them to form a narrative is a treat. No, that’s too much of an undersell, it’s an honor. Adam Green is one of those artists. He’s not just a musician. He is a special individual that when in his presence you become included in his artistic endeavors to full level immersion. Without even meaning it every time I point my camera at him he emanates that coolness that just comes naturally to some and can’t be taught.

After becoming close friends I was invited to join him in experiencing his life for a portion of time, to photograph all aspects of his goings ons. Full nitty gritty. The phrase “access all areas” says it best. During this time period we set out to create an album cover for the Minor Love record & to document the subsequent tours. The first of them begun in September 2009 with Adam supporting our good friends in The Cribs.

Now it’s 10 years later and what with Adams latest record just being released(Engine of Paradise) and him coming back to music it feels like an appropriate time to relive this era. When reminiscing about that decade and then turning back around into the present we jump to Adam Green - Filmmaker, musician, artist, graphic comic novelist, husband and a father.

This collection spans July 2009 to February 2010. Two tours. Two countries. Two mates. This is the result. Thanks to Adam for the honor and for falling down upon us.

Beverages of the night courtesy of Sailor Jerry. (big thanks to the amazing Dana Dynamite).
Guy Eppel is a London-born photographer based in New York, who began his career shooting some of the best & brightest U.K bands of the early oughts for the illustrious New Musical Express. During his early days for the magazine, he made important connections with artists such as The Libertines, The Cribs, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, among many others.
After many years covering live shows from the grottiest and dingiest pub venues to the lofty arenas and festival stages, Eppel moved to the States and began focusing on feature photography and portraits, capturing definitive recent images of 70’s New York greats including David Johansen, Alan Vega and the Beastie Boys.
He currently resides in Brooklyn and shoots for publications MOJO, Q and The Guardian.

Adam Green is an artistic polymath -- a songwriter, filmmaker, visual artist, and poet.
A co-founder of The Moldy Peaches and author of ten solo-albums, his songs have been performed by artists as diverse as The Libertines, Carla Bruni, Kelly Willis, Dean & Britta, and Will Oldham. Green’s paintings and sculptures have been the subject of exhibitions in America, Asia and Europe, including a 2016 show at the Fondation Beyeler Museum in Basel, Switzerland.
He wrote and directed the feature film The Wrong Ferarri (2010), the first feature film shot entirely on an iPhone, and Adam Green's Aladdin (2016) which Buzzfeed.com described as “the trippiest movie ever made."
Green’s newest book War and Paradise is a graphic novel that combines his lyrical and visual vocabulary. The satirical war epic is about the clash of humans with machines, the meeting of spirituality with singularity, and the bidirectional relationship between life and the afterlife.

About Jason Cruz:
Jason Alexander Cruz is an artist, musician, father and motorcycle enthusiast. Trading an art scholarship for the open road Cruz began touring with his band Strung Out at an early age and never looked back. With over eleven full-length albums under his belt and 30 years of touring he still continues to write and perform with the same band he started over 30 years ago
As an artist, Cruz has shown his work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and Tokyo. His inspirations include 80’s Venice skate culture, graffiti, Basquiat, Lee Bonticou, and the Pulp covers of Robert McGinnis.
Jason says, “I became fascinated with and started collecting children’s book before I ever thought of having kids. I loved the freedom of children’s books, the possibilities, and the rhythm. As an artist and musician, it seemed like an obvious choice to make my own. Once I became a father I began the process of creating this book.
‘There are such things as in your Dreams’ took two years to complete and will be my first book in a series of three children’s books. It’s basically a bedtime song with illustrations providing the music.”

WIRE People In A Film - crowdfunding taster @wirehq @peopleinafilm

People In A Film

Today we are bringing the Wire documentary trailed in August 2018 a step closer..
For the first time Wire are collaborating on a film about themselves and their work. This film aims to express the very essence of Wire – the personalities, their music, their worldview, their history and their future.
This is a film which will go beyond the over-familiar conventions of the standard music documentary.  Wire are working with seasoned director and producer Malcolm Boyle and award winning writer and producer Graham Duff, to create a film that has the humour, the unpredic tability, the surrealist edge and creative agility of a Wire song.

How To Get Involved
You can help make this documentary about this most unique and influential of British bands happen.
Initial shooting has already started, capturing Wire in the legendary Rockfield Studios recording a new album, as well as extensive in-depth interviews with Colin Newman, Graham Lewis, Robert Grey, Matt Simms and Bruce Gilbert.  We've also shot footage of a special one off event which reunited Wire's original line-up.
We are now seeking su pporters to help us complete the next stage of the film. We initially need financial support for the researching and sourcing of archive materials, as well shooting further interviews with key players in the Wire story. The budget for this is £60,000.

Once this next stage has been completed, we will then seek final funding from funding bodies and other sources to complete the final edit and dubbing theatre mix, and cover international music, still and film property clearances.

We are optimistic that this crowdfunding campaign will draw together the international community of Wire fans, music documentary viewers and lovers of music and cutting-edge culture who would be fascinated to see inside a group of artists who continue to leave such a distinctive mark on modern music and culture.
There are a range of donation options on offer.  All and any help is welcome.  If you’re feeling generous, you can even ha ve your name on the credits!

Donate today and bring People In A Film closer to completion via PEOPLE IN A FILM'S - CROWDFUNDER PAGE

People In A Film  Launch Event

13th July - State 51’s Factory Space on Rhoda Street in Shoreditch
Past and present members of the band will be there, along with film-makers Malcolm Boyle and Graham Duff. We’ll be talking about Wire and the film, and showing early rushes to give you a taste. Admission is FREE but capacity is limited. Tickets availabe from WeGotTickets.

2020

As also mentioned in last August’s newsletter and reiterated in Colin’s Consequence of Sound Interview (ostensibly about the 40th Anniversary of “154”) there will be a new Wire album in 2020. Most likely to be released in January. Recording is by now quite advanced for the as yet un-named album but anyone who has seen any of Wire’s late 2018 gigs or any this year will have heard at least some of the songs. There are also plans for a 2nd release for RSD 2020.  Watch th is space!

Alison Mosshart Announces New Book CAR MA

Alison Mosshart Announces CAR MA
Compendium Of Art, Photography & Writing To Be Published in June via Hells Angles & FF-1051 Gallery

Lead vocalist with The Kills and The Dead Weather, Alison Mosshart has spent the last 26 years on the road performing and living a predominantly transitory life. The daughter of a used car salesman, Mosshart grew up with a vivid appreciation for classic cars; for being behind the wheel and in the passenger seat. In the early days of The Kills they kept the band to a duo in order that they could tour America by car and throughout her life she has recorded her existence on the road with photography and journals.

CAR MA is Alison Mosshart's first printed collection of paintings, photographs, short stories, and poetry. It is a book about cars, rock n' roll, and love. It's a book about America, performance, and life on the road. It's a book about fender bender portraiture, story tellin' tire tracks, and the never-ending search for the spirit under the hood.

CAR MA, is a 112 page love letter to the motorcar, and - more specifically - the perceptivity gained from a life spent relishing them. Already renowned as a lyricist, Mosshart's reputation in the art world has been growing over the past few years as galleries in New York, London and Los Angeles have staged exhibitions of her paintings. CAR MA includes some of these along with hundreds of photographs she's taken along the way. Her prose is electric, inspired by the images she was collating for the book, it provides a narrative to the anthology; a first person walk through Alison's journals as she details memories, places, conversations, relationships, journeys and - of course - cars.

Mosshart imagines the auto body shop like some other Coney Island. And America's highways the last great roller coasters. She shows us that the engine on fire is connected to the guitar feeding back since birth. And the sensation of walking on stage and facing an audience is like the laugh before the scream in a car without brakes. She ruminates that automobiles- with their doors and mirrors and windows, engines and wheels and radios- portray us. Mirror our need to be in or to exit, our inward reflections and outward visions, our lifetimes of tinkering with the mysterious heart. That which runs until it doesn't. Throughout history the car has been a symbol of freedom and hopeful adventure. It stands to reason it is also a symbol of our subsequent spinning out... over things we never thought could happen during a song that f'king good with the volume up that f'king loud.
If you've ever found yourself feeling holy, pulling out of the gas station with a full tank, like the last beautiful free soul on this planet, this book is for you. In fact it's probably about you.

CAR MA  will be available from Dover Street Market. First edition is a limited edition run of 500 copies. Retail $50.00

ABOUT ALISON MOSSHART
Born in Vero Beach, FL, Mosshart pursued art from an early age. The daughter of a high school art teacher and a used car dealer, she had an early passion for painting, cars, and music. As a teenager she joined a punk band and began touring at the age of 14. Mosshart continuously made art, took photographs and kept extensive journals on tour, inspired by the constant change of scene and bewildering pace from one city and country to the next. The disjointed yo-yo of life on the road, adrenaline spikes and comedowns, the many bizarre or bad, boring or blissful moments, are manifest in her impulsive painting style and subject matter. Mosshart studied fine art at the University of Florida, Gainesville, between tours, concentrating on printmaking, photography, video, collage and drawing. Dropping out in 2000 to move to London to start The Kills, she continued her studies for a semester at various London art schools. As well as fronting both The Kills and The Dead Weather, she has appeared as a special guest on recordings by the Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, Cage The Elephant, Primal Scream, Placebo, The Last Shadow Puppets and Gang Of Four.

My Own Devices--Photographs by Misha Vladimirskiy May 11 at Joseph Gross Gallery in Chinatown

My Own Devices
Photographs By
Misha Vladimirskiy

Opening
Saturday, May 11
6-9pm

Joseph Gross Gallery
978 Chung King Rd.
Los Angeles Ca 90012
In MY OWN DEVICES, photographer Misha Vladimirskiy has captured celebrities interacting with themselves, creating visual doubles that both expose and obscure the subject’s true nature. Pairing technical acumen with instinct and intuition, Vladimirskiy’s images of actors (Tiffany Haddish, Jeff Goldblum), comedians (Jon Stewart, David Cross), and musicians (Billie Eilish, Kehlani) explore each subject’s self-awareness as well as their awareness of the viewer’s perceptions about the character they project. In showing these celebrities interacting with themselves, some self-consciously while others at ease, Vladimirskiy uses his camera to help his subjects and their alter egos reveal their stories.
Born in Transnistria, Misha Vladimirskiy received a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC), where he studied with Larry Sultan and Jim Goldberg. Vladimirskiy has linked the worlds of commerce and art, launching two successful media companies. Vladimirskiy is equally comfortable working with international corporations as he is shooting live bands at intimate clubs and large-scale festivals. His commercial work has been featured in publications such as Billboard, Flaunt, The New York Times, NME, and Rolling Stone.

Setlists For Young Voices is the brainchild of novelist, screenwriter, and music lover Nick Hornby. “One of my friends used to stand at the front of the show so he could read the setlist and call out the name of the next song. It really used to annoy the band,” Hornby says. “So this is a way to satisfy your music-geek side without aggravating your favorite musicians.” Hornby called on fellow novelists Dave Eggers and Michael Chabon to partner with him, and Setlists for Young Voices was born. “We’re hoping to raise about $50,000,” says Eggers. “That will have a powerful impact on more than 150 student writers at the Ministry of Stories and writing centers worldwide.”
