Joy Downer Announces June 5th Release of Debut LP Paper Moon & Drops New Single “A Song You’d Never Want to Hear” Today!

Paper Moon
New York, NY – May 6, 2020 – Joy Downer is excited to announce the release of her debut album Paper Moon on June 5th. With the news, Joy is sharing the infectious new single “A Song You’d Never Want to Hear” – available today via all DSPs HERE. The track and album feature Joy’s addictive vocal melodies seamlessly blended with synths, drum machines and guitars. Self-described as “Alternative Dream Pop,” the nine-song debut LP was recorded by Joy and her husband Jeffrey Downer in their home studio in West Adams, Los Angeles. Dave Trumfio (WilcoJesus and Mary ChainThe Mekons) mastered the album and mixed six of the songs with the remainder of the tracks being mixed by Liam Westbrook, one-half of the UK production duo Superhuman.
Paper Moon was written and recorded by Joy and Jeffrey Downer outside of “Plastic Wrap” – a song they collaborated on with musician, visual artist and painter Darren Le Gallo. Released a little over a year ago, the song was featured on Jo Whiley’s BBC Radio 2 show and the stunning music video directed by Le Gallo – watch HERE – premiered via Earmilk who called it “a perfect slice of indie-pop ear candy” and continued with, “this track has a retro feel reminiscent of the Eurythmics with a distinctive modern twist.” The debut LP also features Joy’s brother Jon Bishop on “Neon Turns” and title track “Paper Moon.”
Paper Moon is the follow-up to Joy’s debut EP Radio Dreamer – which was released January 2017 and was recorded and produced by Rob Kolar (KOLARSLemon Sun). With some early love from Grimy Goods and HillyDilly among others, the songs also caught the attention of UK production duo Superhuman who enlisted Joy’s vocal talents for a Honda TV ad campaign that featured her singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” – watch HERE.
Joy continued to release songs in 2018 and 2019 including “Weapons Down” which got picked up for MTV’s Siesta Key Season 2, Episode 12 alongside tracks by Bebe RexhaCarly Rae JepsenJames Bay and David Guetta & Sia. A voice in demand, earlier this year Joy’s song “In the Water” was selected as the theme for the Netflix Original Series Spinning Out - watch HERE - that had Refinery29 calling the track a “total bop” and suggested viewers “don’t skip the intro.”
Joy grew up in a large Mormon family as one of 10 kids in Jamul, CA. She traveled the world as a fashion model living in Australia, England, LA and NYC before settling in LA with her husband. No longer a member of the Church, she credits her love of music and her spirituality with her upbringing. With that intense connection, Joy felt it was important to include her family members on Paper Moon. In addition to her brother Jon, Joy said she “sampled voicemails from both my Mom and Dad, had my Mom play piano, had my brother Jon sing and play guitar at the end, and my sister Jaime played some harmonium. There’s even the song I started writing at age 17, that I didn’t ‘sell to a real singer like Britney Spears,’” Joy says, thinking back on a suggestion a high school boyfriend made after hearing an early version of “A Song You’d Never Want to Hear.”
“A Song You’d Never Want to Hear” is out today via all DSPs HERE and Joy Downer’s debut album Paper Moon is out June 5th.
