Artwork by Steve Powers

David Byrne has added two New York City dates to the extensive world tour in support of his forthcoming solo record, American Utopia, out this Friday, March 9 via Todomundo/Nonesuch Records; he will also be interviewed and will perform on theLate Show with Stephen Colbert . For the first time since August 1983, during the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense tour, Byrne will play Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, on September 15. He has also added a show at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on September 17. Tickets for both shows go on sale on Friday, March 9 at 10am EST at davidbyrne.com.

Byrne will be performing songs from American Utopia, as well as classics from his solo career and his days with Talking Heads. A twelve-piece band joins Byrne on stage for a choreographed, “untethered” concert that he has called “the most ambitious show I’ve done since the ones that were filmed for Stop Making Sense.” Tune-Yards will open the shows in New York.

The album has already received tremendous critical acclaim. Mojo said, “Byrne filters grace, wonder and apocalyptic portent through his fractured worldview. He remains a fine guide through life’s disruptions and disturbances,” and Stereogum noted "American Utopia is an album full of pulsating beats and rich textures. You could also say that about any Talking Heads record, but the new album isn’t a throwback; it feels like it could only exist right now."

Last week, NPR Music’s First Listen began streaming the record in full, saying in its review: "If a brain in a jar could observe the world, make sense of it and churn it into a batch of songs, it would make the album American Utopia." Read the full piece and stream the album here.

The artwork and merch for the tour was designed by New York City artist Stephen Powers. Powers, aka ESPO, is known for creating graffiti, signage, and large-scale public art. He has also created a special set of prints inspired by American Utopiaavailable for a limited time exclusively in the Nonesuch Store: a two-print set, each a three-color screen print, 12"x12" on 335 gsm Coventry Rag, packaged in a hand-stamped LP sleeve (actual LP not included). Each print is a hand-pulled screen print made in Brooklyn at ESPO's Art World. Orders for these hand-made prints will only be taken till Thursday, March 8, at 5pm ET, and include a download of the album available on release day.

Acclaim For American Utopia:

"American Utopia is an album full of pulsating beats and rich textures. You could also say that about any Talking Heads record, but the new album isn’t a throwback; it feels like it could only exist right now." Stereogum

"Byrne has put together an album that not only sounds fresh, but concerns itself with the world as it exists in this moment, right now. " UPROXX

“The minute you put American Utopia on, it grabs you. It grabs you by the hips, with blasts of electro-funk. It grabs you by the brains, with quirky lyrics. And it grabs you by the heartstrings, with gospel-tinged melodies. This is an album for anyone who fears that we are running out of tunes. The whole thing has a vitality that will appeal to anyone, young or old.” Mail On Sunday

“A whimsical, weird and totally wonderful set of songs. A well-timed treat delivered by one of music's most beloved eccentrics. Go explore.” Clash

“American Utopia has come from the desire to provide little stabs at happiness when they seem hard to find. There are plenty of delightful and eccentric moments. The lasting impression is not one of a blithe spirit at play, but a deeply anxious, conscientious human struggling to find redeeming features in a world that seems devoid of them. It’s a noble initiative for which Byrne should be commended.” Esquire

“Pop polymath delivers surreal state-of-the-nation address.” Uncut

“His best record in years. His creative fires still show no sign of dimming, Byrne remains as playful and brilliant as ever.” Q
