This Groundbreaking Black Frontwoman Has Sage Advice
On Making Your Own Way

Before Janelle Monáe was out there rocking a suit and a fedora, there was Pauline Black—the innovative, rebellious frontwoman of UK ska band The Selecter. Below, Black reflects on what's changed and what hasn't for women of color in the industry.
It is simultaneously inspiring and depressing to imagine what Pauline Black must have experienced as a frontwoman in the 1970s. As the singer for the groundbreaking 2 tone ska revival band The Selecter, Black moved in an industry long dominated by a white patriarchal structure. And as a black woman with an androgynous aesthetic, doors did not open easily for her.
But listen to even a few notes of Black's buoyant, bursting-with-life vocals, and it's clear that she possessed a fearlessness and singular artistry that enabled her to be the innovator that she was and still is today—and she made it her own way.

Pauline Black: Queen of Ska and The Selecter

“I have faith in the human race. No matter how bad things get,
people always manage to see some daylight at the end of the tunnel.”

Try as some may, to make it otherwise, women cannot be written out of history. Pauline Black is a name many will link to the Rude Girl image she cultivated in the late ’70s as lead singer of The Selecter.
A two-tone ska band from Coventry, The Selecter — alongside bands like The Specials and Madness — worked their way into the music scene at the edge of the ’70s. Two-tone was a fresh take on ska; a take aimed at dissolving the racial tensions of Thatcher-era Britain. Hence its name: two-tone.
