Sigur Rós are pleased to announce new additions to the lineup of NORÐUR OG NIÐUR festival, their ambitious curation of Reykjavík's largest arts venue, Harpa Concert Hall, between Christmas and New Year, Dec 27-30, 2017. They also today announce a handful of exclusive vinyl releases to be made available at the festival, including a collection of rare, unreleased solo recordings by Jonsí (an excerpt of which can be heard here). More details below...
On Dec 28th My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields performs a very rare solo set late into the evening. Before Kevin, Sigur Rós have added an exciting group of electronic pioneers, both breakthrough and established to their Norður og Niður bill: Germany's Tangerine Dream, who will visit Iceland for the very first time with an audiovisual performance spanning their entire career; legendary Icelandic dance maestros GusGus bringing their mesmerizing electronics, haunting grooves and vocal artistry; and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, riding high on unanimous praise for the latest album The Kid with effervescent, kaleidoscopic live show.
The previous day (27th), Árni (from the Vaccines) has been added to the bill, performing his first Iceland gig, and showcasing his new "Depresso Tropicana" direction, as exemplified by Bore You With My Melody.

Other acts across the week include an opening ceremony featuring Sigur Rós orchestral collaboratorHilmar Örn Hilmarsson, rhymer Steindór Andersen and Páll Guðmundsson on his amazing stone marimba; renditions of Sigur Rós songs brought to life by the subtle tintinnabulations of theReykjanesbaer Music School Bell Choir; the band's old brass section Brassgat í bala (Horny Brasstards) performing slow variations of some of their work with Sigur Rós, as well as original material; a solo electronic set from sometime Sigur Rós trombonist, Sigrún, and another from their former trumpet player Eiríkur Orri Olafsson; plus new duo Jo Berger Myhre & Olafur Bjorn Olafssonthe latter featuring Obo, aka pianist with Jónsi solo and on Sigur Rós's 2012-13 tours.
Alex Somers will also bring a musical installation based around antique gramophones, which he will perform in the venue every day immediately after Sigur Ros's set finishes.

They join what's already a long list of creative luminaries including: MOGWAI, JARVIS COCKER, KEVIN SHIELDS, STARS OF THE LID, DAN DEACON, PEACHES, JULIANNA BARWICK, JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON, BLANCK MASS, ALEXIS TAYLOR (HOT CHIP), AMIINA, ICELAND DANCE COMPANY, JFDR, and many more.

As well as live music, the festival will be screening films with related talks throughout the run.

28th -  Dean DeBlois introduces a screening of Heima, the documentary about Sigur Rós he directed in 2007.
29th - Composer Daniel Bjarnason introduces the film Under The Treethis year's Icelandic entry to the Academy Awards.
30th - Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson talks about Paganism, ahead of a screening of The Show of Showsthe amazing archive-based film about the history of circuses he co-scored with Sigur Rós's Georg Holm, Orri Pall Dyrason and Kjartan Holm.
