Caroline Polachek (Chairlift, Ramona Lisa) is pleased to announce that her freshly-released instrumental album under the name CEP titled Drawing The Target Around The Arrow is available today on all digital platforms. This comes just over a week after she dropped the album (released through Pannonica Records) as a free download on The Creative Independent.
CEP has also announced a run of two performances on February 23rd and 24th at Brooklyn's National Sawdust, where the album will be performed accompanied by a twelve part choral ensemble. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased here.
Made entirely using sine waves, or pure tones (read: oscillations of constant amplitude), this marks Polachek's first instrumental album. Composed, produced and mixed entirely by Polachek, it is comprised of meditative, minimal pieces that were created in the periphery of her other projects from the time period of 2013-2016.
Coming weeks after the announcement of Chairlift's breakup, Drawing The Target Around The Arrow is an unexpected departure from the melodic vocals that have become synonymous with Polachek’s name. Furthermore, she acknowledges making this record for "functional use" rather than as personal expression or for entertainment. Giving it away as a free .zip download the day prior to the Trump inauguration, Polachek intended the album as "an open-ended gift".
As she explains to the Creative Independent: “this record feels like an intermission, like a bit of a silence between these two other periods.”
