J Dilla : Back To The Crib mixtape - an unheard mixtape made in 1999-2000

It's already been a decade since J Dilla — the mercurial producer and rapper from Detroit — passed away and his posthumously completed album, The Shining, saw the light of day on BBE Records. As they prepare to release the project on 7" for the first time, we're extremely honoured to get our hands on a never-before-heard mixtape by the master himself.
Made some time between mid-1999 and early 2000, it's a rare invitation into Jay Dee's living room; a fly-on-the-wall glimpse at what he had blaring out of his home speakers while on the sofa or by the MPC. Sink into your own couch and press play before you read up and order a copy of the re-release.

"Towards the end of 1999 or early 2000, it was my first trip to Detroit. James (Yancey) was working with James Poyser on Erykah's 'Mama's Gun' LP. We'd checked out a couple of record stores (I can't recall where or their names) and this tape was playing in the car. I recall Think Twice was on the tape and I suggested there and then that he do a cover with Erykah for the BBE album. We didn't get the Erykah feature, but people sure remember James' cover. We drove past a sign, it said Welcome To Detroit and I suggested that would be a good name for the album. When we pulled over James gave me the tape and said this is yours, or words to effect."
