Crate Digger: An Obsession With Punk Records by Bob Suren

Crate Digger: An Obsession With Punk Recordsby Bob Suren
Available on June 9th - Trade Paperback, 192 Pages - $14.95

An insider's account of the last 30 years of punk rock and vinyl records,
including new information on many punk luminaries.

Bob Suren spent more than 30 years immersed in punk rock. His obsession with punk music, culture, and especially record collecting began with a loaned mix tape in a small town in Florida when he was a teenager and slowly took over all aspects of his life.

He started a record label and distribution company, opened a record store, managed a thriving bootleg merchandise empire, published a magazine, promoted shows, and traveled the world with his own band. He mentored generations of younger punks and built a movement that put Florida on the map. He stayed a step ahead of all the ups and downs of the music industry, always pioneering.

Join Bob as he hangs out with punk luminaries like Jello Biafra, The Meatmen, Raw Power, Black Flag, The Dead Boys, Millions of Dead Cops, Rattus, and more. He relates his (mis)adventures breaking his curfew to see the Dead Boys' last show, almost getting arrested after seeing the Ramones, touring with his bands in Egypt, Ecuador, Brazil, and more.

As Jeff Nelson of Minor Threat said, "Really brings to life the early days of the American punk scene as it spread slowly across the country, through turntables, fanzines, and word of mouth. His vivid vinyl recollections illustrate how good record stores and adventurous college radio stations were so essential in bringing startling new music into the lives of many previously isolated kids. It follows the trajectory of a kid-turned-concert-promoter as his passion for music became all-consuming."

Then one day it all fell apart. He'd built up his life like a record collection, but it didn't satisfy him anymore. He sold everything, dropped out, moved far from home to start fresh... and wrote this book.

Crate Digger is written in short spurts tied to actual records. The result is real, heartfelt, and deeply informed by the music of the last thirty years. It's a basic piece of your punk history collection.

"Bob Suren delivers some great punk rawk history through anecdote and wit, intermingled with personal stories of love, loss, the characters that have come and gone and that elusive hunk of vinyl that's just around the next corner.... All spanning 30 years of Bob's life."
- Ami Lawless, Voetsek

"A passionate and cautionary tale of the ecstasy and dark side of a serious vinyl addiction in the golden age of preinternet wax hoarding . A must read for anyone who collects anything!"
- Tesco Vee, the Meatmen.

"More than just your typical "record guide," Crate Digger allows us to accompany Bob on his passionate 30+ year punk rock journey. The anecdotal approach reminds us that, for the passionate music fan, there's a personal connection to a particular record that often conjures up various memories, both good and bad."
- Al Quint, Suburban Voice magazine and Sonic Overload Radio.

In late 2014, Grant performed much of his celebrated catalog with the 60-piece BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, with arrangements by his long-time collaborator Fiona Brice.  So good was the performance, and also in response to public demand, Grant's UK label, Bella Union, released a live recording of the show late last year.  This follows Grant's 2014 nomination for a BRIT Award in the Best International Male Solo Artist category, where he went up against Drake, Bruno Mars, and Justin Timberlake.

2014 also found Grant collaborating with many widely acclaimed artists:  He was asked by Elton John to re-recorded "Sweet Painted Lady," which was included on the 40th anniversary reissue of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that came out in March.  Not only did he help translate Asgeir's debut album, In the Silence, into English, but his vocals can also be heard on the recent Hercules And Love Affair album, The Feast of The Broken Heart, on tracks " I Try To Talk To You" and "Liberty."

Multi-talented musician, songwriter & producer, Nanna Øland Fabricius, better known as Oh Land, has unveiled her new video "Flags” which Jezebel premiered. The video was created and produced by Oh Land herself—a combination of artistry and her desire to truly illustrate the meaning of the song.  On the crafting of the video, Oh Land elaborates:  “ These days where everyone has a phone and a camera, you can actually do it yourself. It doesn’t need to be a super expensive, super difficult thing to do. You just need to have some ideas and be willing to work a lot yourself.”

Click HERE to watch “Flags” and we encourage you to post and share!

“Flags” is the latest from Oh Land’s fourth studio album, Earth Sick released via Tusk or Tooth/Kobalt Label Services. The “Flags” video is a continuation of the grassroots and innovative approach Oh Land has taken with Earth Sick, fueling all aspects of the creative process.  Earth Sick is out now digitally and on CD and vinyl, and lead single “Head Up High” has been getting serious remix love from the likes of MS MR, Penguin Prison, CSS, Lauren Flax and Mercury (the remix bundle will be released digitally on March 3).

The infamously fierce, feminist pioneers of American grunge punk have officially funded their documentary film, directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker, Sarah Price (American Movie, The Yes Men, Summercamp) Titled  L7: Pretend We're Dead, the film takes viewers on an all access journey into the 1990’s grunge movement that took the world by storm through the eyes of the band that helped define it as the genre of a generation. Having reached their fundraising goal to bring the film to life, there are 3 days left to contribute and grab incredibly unique rewards, including a séance with the band (only 2 left!). Go to the Kickstarter project HERE to check out the wide array of perks, from signed vinyl to handwritten lyrics.

The reaction to the announcement of the documentary was far more electric than the band could have expected, catalyzing a widely anticipated reunion of the band in its original line-up, set to take on festivals across Europe with more dates to be announced. All along the Kickstarter journey, fans and supporters came to the table from around the world, across genres and gender. Recently, Brazilian electro-rockers CSS voiced their support and explained the weight the band held in their mind, recounting their discovery of the band as teenagers. You can see the clip of them chatting about L7 here!

Culled from over 100 hours of vintage home movies taken by the band, never before seen performance footage, and candid interviews,  L7: Pretend We're Dead chronicles the early days of the band's formation in 1985 to their height as the 'queens of grunge'. The formula: one part Donita’s love of pop and punk and one part Suzi’s hard rock and blues, charged with lyrics that had political bite and humor that proved irresistible.

L7 will kick off a European tour, bringing their high-octane energy and anthemic chops to the stage to ignite audiences once again. Stay tuned for more live date announcements coming soon!

Even though we may live in the same physical space, we all carry our own vastly different maps of it – from personal routes, shortcuts to the connections with accumulated memories, associations and experiences. Our own maps of our own city.''
