Harmony Korine A Crack-Up at the Race Riots

Harmony Korine A Crack-Up at the Race Riots, Paperback out April 16, 2013
via Drag City
A NOVEL SETTING ABOUT THE BASTARD WISHER
"It's about a race war and it happens in Florida. And the Jewish people sit in trees. And the black people are run by M.C. Hammer. And the whites are run by Vanilla Ice. I wanted to write the Great American Choose Your Own Adventure novel."
--Harmony Korine, addressing a national television audience, 10/17/97
Back in print from Harmony Korine, A Crack-Up At the Race Riots was originally published by Mainstreet/Doubleday in 1998. Korine's first novel presents fragments of a portrait in multimedia: print, photographs, drawings, news clippings, handwriting, a poem, attempted diagrams, clip art - but mostly text, including hard-luck stories, off-and-on-color jokes, script-scraps, found letters, free rhymes, drug flashbacks and other missing scenes, exploring the world of show-biz with fingers prying in the cracks and feet set lightly in the black humours of the real ol' world.
This excretion of the danglers of public life would make William Burroughs sigh and turn the page, at least...
A Crack-Up At the Race Riots also includes some other semi/attempted/quasi lists/scripts, a few letters from Tupac and a set of eleven suicide notes with room included for your signature. So that's the book in a nutshell. I don't know, maybe you had to be there. But it has become a great cult classic and it's back in print, so be there now, what the fuck?
Harmony Korine is the self-educated thirty-nine-year-old who wrote and directed the controversial films Trash Humpers, Mister Lonely, Julien Donkey-Boy and Gummo. His new film Spring Breakers was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Korine was raised in the carnival and lives in Tennessee with his wife and kid.
"The new heir, the man, the sweet edge of the future" - Jim Carroll, author of The Basketball Diaries
"I was struck from the very beginning that there is a totally independent & new voice in writing. I believe that [he] is a great talent as a writer" - Werner Herzog

Deap Vally Announce Spring Tour Dates
Including Dates With The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
& Co-headlining With Free Energy

Los Angeles' all-female rock-duo Deap Vally are excited to announce details of their upcoming tour, including dates with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and dates co-headling with Free Energy. The girls will play a number of shows this spring and summer, beginning on April 14 and 21 at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They've already made a name for themselves as a great live act through supporting tours with Mumford & Sons and Muse. The band will also hit the road for some east coast dates with Free Energy in May, including a show at New York City's Bowery Ballroom on May 5, for what is sure to be a great way to spend Cinco De Mayo. For a full itinerary, please see below.

Deap Vally are touring in support of their Get Deap! EP, to be released on April 9th. This is the band's first U.S. release on Cherrytree/Communion/Interscope/Island. The Get Deap! EP offers the first taste of what's to come on the band's upcoming full-length album, which is near completion and will be released later this year. This all follows the release of widely acclaimed songs in the UK, which gained the band a 'Band of the Week' feature in NME and got them playlisted by Radio 1. Of the band's debut single "Gonna Make My Own Money," NME said "[Deap Vally draws] on the unrepentant strut of Ike and Tina and the heavyweight clatter of Led Zeppelin, as well as Karen O's tree-felling caterwaul."

The Get Deap! EP, produced by Lars Stalfors (The Mars Volta, Matt & Kim) includes four songs, including "Gonna Make My Own Money" and new song "Lies." Watch the new video for "Lies," which is rapidly approaching 400k views, at the link below:

Fans can pre-order the Get Deap! EP on Tunes at http://smarturl.it/GetDeap as well as over at www.deapvally.com where there are additional offers and merchandise bundles.

White Prism Reveals Her First Track "Dance On" with Trendland HERE

White Prism Reveals Her First Track "Dance On" with Trendland HERE
(feel free to share it from her SoundCloud HERE.)

White Prism EP out April 23rd
(physical EP + download available on request)

Live in Brooklyn, NY @ Glasslands Gallery on Tuesday April 23rd

White Prism revealed her first track from the White Prism EP with Trendland HERE, and called it ""Reminding me of a contemporary Fleetwood Mac, I am already thirsting for more."
Feel free to share it from her SoundCloud HERE.

White: The presence of all the wavelengths of visible light.
Prism: A transparent optical element that reflects images and refracts light.

These two words combine to define the sound of the Johanna Cranitch project - WhitePrism. The Australian-born and NYC-based artist, has been surrounded by music since birth. It was her Hungarian grandfather, a jazz pianist, who gave her his blessing by declaring, “this one will be musical.” And so, her musical journey began.

From her early upbringings in the esteemed Kodaly school of music, to the Gregorian chants that her father, a former Priest in training, brought to the table, Johanna was veered to the stage by her music loving parents. She was gracing the halls of the Sydney Opera House at the tender age of 9, and performing with the Opera Australia Children’s Chorus. Opera was merely the beginning for this pop loving songstress. Her love of Fleetwood Mac, Kate Bush, and Wham! would influence her future leanings into dreamy, electro-pop songwriting.

Upon graduating from high school, Johanna enrolled in a vocal jazz program at the Australian Institute of Music, where she graduated with honors. After a stint of performing across Australia, Johanna landed in New York City. Once in New York, she found herself as a studio engineer at the prestigious Nola Recording Studios. It was during her time at Nola that she began writing and recording over 300 demos. These demos would eventually lead her to her first album and the shimmering sounds of her former project, Johanna and the Dusty Floor.

Johanna had navigated her way through every aspect of the music industry, and she had finally revealed herself as an artist worthy of acclaim. She would soon find herself crisscrossing the globe, including a world tour with The Cranberries, as well as performing at Autre Magazine’s (James Franco and Adarsha Benjamin’s publication) Paris launch. However, she was constantly shifting and shaping her sound along the way. The Dusty Floor had given birth to a new sound. Her ethereal, “Kate Bush-inspired huskyisms”, as described by Time Out magazine, had crystallized into the electro-pop chicness that isWhite Prism.

DARK DARK DARK SHARES TRACK OFF NEW EP, "WHAT I NEEDED," OUT APRIL 23 ON SUPPLY & DEMAND

DARK DARK DARK SHARES TRACK OFF NEW EP, "WHAT I NEEDED," OUT APRIL 23 ON SUPPLY & DEMAND

FULL EUROPEAN TOUR IN MAY

SINGER NONA MARIE INVIE TO FEATURE ON THE NATIONAL'S NEW ALBUM "TROUBLE WILL FIND ME"

LISTEN TO DARK DARK DARK'S "WHAT I NEEDED" VIA THE LINE OF BEST FIT

For those who simply can't get enough of the meandering piano lines and ethereal sounds of Dark Dark Dark's latest album Who Needs Who, Supply & Demand is proud to present three stunning, brand new tracks released especially for Record Store Day in the UK.

Each one a band favourite held back for a special occasion, these are songs from the Who Needs Who recording sessions deemed worthy of their own distinctive place. Recorded in the aftermath of a relationship breakdown between band co-founders Marshall LaCount and Nona Marie Invie, each song remains as personal as the work you'll hear on the Who Needs Who LP, but finds small departures to explore.

On the single, "What I Needed," Nona steps forward and sings in a way usually reserved for The Shangri-Las, her coy choir behind her, and the band doing their version of the 60's. Sweeping romantic melody and chilling vocals still in tact, listeners are reminded of what makes the Minneapolis quintet so exceptional. Next we're treated to the wistful "Love Lies," the song Nona deems her best ever. Heavenly yet heartbreaking, it reflects a bittersweet realisation that all things happen for a reason, coming over like an undiscovered Mazzy Star-Beth Orton collaboration. "I Collect Things" drifts loosely in homage to friends, whilst an exclusive early-2000's disco-house bonus remix of "How It Went Down" makes for a light-hearted take on one of the LP's singles.

Since their 2010 debut full length Wild Go, Dark Dark Dark have toured extensively in the US, Europe and Australia, enjoyed sold out shows, appeared on Channel 4's Live at Abbey Road, supported The National and Low, and wowed crowds at 2012's Green Man and End Of The Road festivals. As recently revealed in an interview with the Gothamist, Nona was invited to sing on the new record by The National, which will be released this May. Dark Dark Dark's success is set to continue throughout 2013 with performances at Field Day and ATP festivals as part of a full European tour this Spring, with US tour plans for the Fall to be announced soon.

Wire's Change Become Us Streaming At Pitchfork Advance

Wire's Change Become Us Streaming At Pitchfork Advance
US Summer Tour Dates Including Pitchfork Music Festival Announced

Wire's new album Change Becomes Us, out today on PinkFlag, is streaming in its entirety at Pitchfork Advance. The album is available for purchase (including special limited edition bundles) at the PinkFlag web store. Rolling Stone recently caught up with Colin Newman and said "[Change Becomes Us] Like everything else in their varied discography, it's lyrically challenging, melodically and rhythmically accessible and texturally contemporary. For the first time since the Seventies, though, this one feels like a genuine band album, as if Wire's previous stops and starts never happened." The band has just announced a U.S. summer tour in support of the album, which will include a performance the Pitchfork Music Festival. Tickets for the festival are on sale now.

In spring 2012, Wire's plan had been to convene at Rockfield Studios in Wales to review the rudimentary blueprints of songs that had never made it beyond a few live performances in 1979 and 1980 - a time when the band-members were in creative overdrive yet the band itself was disintegrating. The aim wasn't simply to resuscitate and record old songs; in fact, many of them hadn't become proper songs in the first place, existing only as basic ideas or undeveloped parts. Rather, the objective was to approach that unrealized work as an oblique strategy, a potential springboard for Wire's contemporary, forward-looking processes - a possible point of departure for new compositions.

This took place with Wire firing on all cylinders, as a four-piece studio entity again, the core line-up of Newman, Graham Lewis and Robert Grey now enhanced by guitarist Matthew Simms. Simms had played a key role in helping the band to cultivate and shape its new sonic landscape throughout the preceding year's live work. Out of the exploratory Rockfield session and subsequent, extensive development and production at Newman's Swim Studio, the ostensible source material became, in the classic Wire tradition, something quite other than what it may have once been - or what it might have become if it had been pursued in 1980.

"Love Bends" is a case in point. Its roots lie in "Piano Tuner (Keep Strumming Those Guitars)" - the raucous, octave-hopping number performed in February 1980 at the Electric Ballroom in Camden and preserved on Document and Eyewitness. But it's now morphed, improbably, into an irresistible, totally modern pop song. "It had to be turned into something else," explains Lewis, "because it only really had one bit." Just as improbably, the gently lilting "Re-invent Your Second Wheel" is tangentially connected to the notorious "Zegk Hoqp," which was more of a one-time happening than a song at the Camden gig: mostly shouting and banging, executed by a stage- full of Wire cronies in funny hats. "It was written for performance, around people with newspaper headdresses; not with music in mind," Lewis emphasizes.

Newman's songwriting and production on Change Becomes Us reimagines the past in ways that ultimately break any substantive connection with it, making entirely new pieces - and these songs themselves enact Wire's restless drive to become other, often thriving on a fundamental tension between opposing sonic characteristics. With its stop-start, soft-hard, quiet-loud structure, "Adore Your Island" veers between what Newman describes as "prog and unhinged punk rock," never quite resolving itself; the drama of "Attractive Space" hinges on a progressive splitting of the song's personality, between its calm, expansive, anthemic orientation and an increasing sense of intensity and claustrophobia.

Change Becomes Us encapsulates the paradoxical essence of Wire's creativity. The tendency of these new songs to refuse a single, settled identity is emblematic of the band's ever-evolving aesthetic - one that's always hinged on sustained tensions and oppositions: between the familiar and the unfamiliar, the comfortable and the unsettling, the melodic and the brutal, the cerebral and the visceral, the smart and the moronic, the obvious and the inscrutable, the rational and the absurd. This intrinsic, core ambivalence generates the essential otherness that has characterized Wire's most memorable, distinctive work - from the epochal innovations of Chairs Missing and 154 to the electronic-pop deconstructions of A Bell Is A Cup to Send's postmodern-punk expressionism and the widescreen lyricism of Red Barked Tree. Change Becomes Us is an undeniable part of that illustrious lineage. Definitely more than just a good idea at the time. - Wilson Neate (Author of Read & Burn: A Book About Wire)

PRINCE RAMA ANNOUNCES EUROPEAN TOUR

PRINCE RAMA ANNOUNCES EUROPEAN TOUR
ALSO UPCOMING NEW YORK CITY SHOW

REVEALS NEW BAND MEMBERS

ANNOUNCES NEW FILM NEVER FOREVER, WATCH THE TRAILER NOW

Following their run of European tour dates this past fall with Animal Collective, Prince Rama are announcing their return to Europe this spring. This trip, however, sees a new incarnation of the band, featuring new band members Christopher Burke and Michael Collins, on bass and synthesizer, respectively. Those who have seen the band play live in the past 6 months will recognize Christopher Burke, as he's been performing with them since this past August. Those that have been following Prince Rama since their inception will recognize Michael Collins, who was previously a member of the band until taking a hiatus in 2010 to pursue his solo career. Before hitting Europe, the band will showcase its new lineup at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on March 28th.

In conjunction with the new lineup and tour dates, the band is proud to announce their forthcoming film. Never Forever is the first ever Now Age psych-opera starring Prince Rama and featuring songs off their latest apocalyptic pop album, Top Ten Hits of the End of the World. Shot in only 5 days and directed by Lily X. Wahrman (Astral Projects), Never Forever takes you on a free-form journey through dimensions both surreal and virtual-- from the glamorous, twisted world of a post-apocalyptic gym queen to the nightmarish breakdown of a VR robot turned pop star. If Alejandro Jodorowsky was reborn in 2127 and crashed his motorcycle into the decayed set of Thriller, it still wouldn't come close to the terror that is Never Forever. Watch the film's trailer below along with all upcoming tour dates. For more info on the film visit neverforeverfilm.com

ROLLING STONE SHARES "MEXICO" FROM SCANNERS FROM THEIR MEXICO EP OUT ON DIM MAK NOW HERE

ROLLING STONE SHARES "MEXICO" FROM SCANNERS FROM THEIR MEXICO EP OUT ON DIM MAK NOW HERE
(Hear Mexico EP HERE, download available on request)

Rolling Stone has shared UK’s Scanners's title track "Mexico", the band explains the song: "We wrote the song 'Mexico' after we toured a few times driving across the U.S. desert. It's pretty mind blowing if you're from the U.K. because there is nothing like it there at all. The heat, the space, it's like another planet. All the time we would be driving near the border and stopping in places like El Paso, but we never made it into Mexico itself," The Scanners Matthew Mole tells Rolling Stone. "So I suppose it always had some strange romantic appeal to us. I suppose that's why we were so conscious of being 'so far from home'." You can hear the track HERE and share it freely HERE.

Scanners released their Mexico EP with Dim Mak Records on March 5th, right before coming to SXSW. Their brand new tracks “Mexico”, “Control” and “Charmed Life” are their latest in their sound that Vice describes as “perfecting a laser-fried blend of dance-punk and leaving beer-soaked UK club night in their wake.” Later this year, the band's Love Is Symmetry album will come out on Dim Mak Records. Submarine was their second album, released in 2010. After the DIY approach to the first album, Scanners had decided to work with experienced producer Stephen Hague (New Order, Blur, Erasure) for the second. Recorded in part at Real World Studios and mixed in Stephen Hague’s shed, the second album’s higher production values made it popular with TV programmers. In fact, it is through TV shows such as Entourage, One Tree Hill, The Big C, Skins and more that Scanners’ music has managed to reach a wider audience. “Salvation” the first single found many new fans thanks to its use in Gossip Girl, and "Lowlife" from the films Endgame and Mama’s Boy
In 2011, after lots more touring and much soul searching Tom decided give up his drumstool. This was eventually taken over by French sticksmith Kilian, who joined in time to record on the third album Love is Symmetry. For their third album Scanners decided to go back to recording and producing themselves. Sarah and Mat have also been kept busy by the arrival of their son Flynn who was born in January 2012.

Scanners’ story starts at a rehearsal studio in Camden Town London in 2005. Sarah and Mat had loads of songs they had been working on together whilst playing guitar in other people’s bands. When they met Amina and Tom it seemed the natural step to go and record these tracks, and so the first Scanners  album ‘Violence is Golden’ was born. It was a homemade affair, recorded in bedrooms and rehearsal rooms, but it still started to attract some attention. Through a strange set of circumstances Steve Aoki, head of LA label Dim Mak Records (Bloc Party, The Rakes, Gossip) heard one of the tracks and was hooked. On a visit to London he met up with the band and he promised to put out the record. So in 2006 Violence is Golden was released to much critical acclaim from sources as varied as the LA Times, Aversion and Perez Hilton. They played their second single "Lowlife" on NBC’s Carson Daly Show, the performance introduced by Ice Cube. They toured the West Coast and supported bands like Datarock, The Horrors, Forward Russia and The Rakes. The success from the album in America led to releases and tours in the UK and Europe. There they played the Rockness and Eurockéennes festivals and supported The Charlatans Air and Devo.

RIDE YOUR HEART DUE APRIL 2 ON DEAD OCEANS

Bleached share second single "Dead In Your Head" from their much anticipated full length album debut, Ride Your Heart. In the new song, the duo sing about loosing a lover, but despite the dark topic maintain a poppy effervescent sound. The track is fun, light-hearted and will make you dance, but never looses that classic rock and roll edge.

On the heels of three well-received singles comes Ride Your Heart, the bombastic debut album out April 2 via Dead Oceans. LA sisters, Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of  freewheeling '77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindingly bright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between. That's the goal: the sugary and sour, repurposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters.

Raised up deep in the San Fernando Valley, their suburban isolation nurtured the girls creativity, as they started making their own music at a young age. Sneaking into punk shows over the hill in Hollywood, they grew up to become teenaged underground staples at all-ages Downtown DIY venue, The Smell.  Eventually signing to Kill Rock Stars and Post Present Medium, their all-girl punk band Mika Miko drew international acclaim, landing slots on tours with No Age, Black Lips, and The Gossip.
Bleached originally formed when the Clavin sisters resolved to continue working with each other upon the break up of Mika Miko. Plans were postponed when the sisters joined other bands. Jennifer relocated to New York and toured extensively. With Jennifer away, Jessie began to play with various bands in LA. But in the fleeting moments they found together back home, the songs that became Bleached's early 7" singles came together. Since Jennifer moved back to her hometown, Bleached now serves as both girls' chief creative outlet.
As a whole, the twelve tracks on Ride Your Heart reveal the many facets of Bleached's music in a delirious vortex of playful harmonies, tangled guitars, and golden noise. Each song brings a new element, while also imbibing the classic moods of bands as varied and iconic in nature as The Ramones and The Cars to The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. From the syncopated backbeat and two-part chorus of "Dead In Your Head,", the rolling riffs and sparkling melodies of "Searching Through The Past" and the pulsating energy and urgency of "Dreaming Without You" and "Outta My Mind", Bleached take you on a sweeping emotional roller coaster that churns and burns.
Ride Your Heart is a thrilling, beating, glorious wall of sound strong enough to withstand its own impact.
