The Golem @ Cinefamily

(w/ live score by Grammy-nominated guitarist Gary Lucas!)

Tuesday, July 17th | 7:30pm

"Gary Lucas's project with ‘The Golem’ is one of the best combinations of live music with a silent film I've ever seen. He brings this historic story to life and makes the 90 minutes a very powerful and compelling performance piece." -- Knitting Factory founder Michael Dorf

“Hauntingly brilliant and meticulously timed." -- Village Voice

Grammy-nominated Gary Lucas, whom Rolling Stone calls "one of the best and most original guitarists in America", comes to the Cinefamily to perform his time-honored solo live score to The Golem, the brilliant 1920 silent horror exemplar of German expressionism! A baroque nightmare of fantastic imagery, The Golem is the only surviving film from actor/filmmaker Paul Wegener's series based on the 16th Century Bohemian folk legend of Prague. Played by Wegener himself, the astounding titular monster is molded from clay and brought to life by the Hebrew incantations of a rabbi wishing to defend a Jewish ghetto facing exile. Steeped in 1920s controversy stemming from false accusations of occult endorsement and Weimar anti-Semitism, this dark, moody fable of a lumbering, lovelorn automaton became the inspiration for Boris Karloff's portrayal of Frankenstein's monster over a decade later. Since debuting his live score in 1989, Gary has accompanied the film all across the globe in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam, Berlin, Florence, Budapest, Toronto, St. Louis, Miami, Tel Aviv, Vienna, Krakow—and, of course, in Prague, home of The Golem. Stealing Sheep "Into the Diamond Sun"

Stealing Sheep announce release details of Into the Diamond Sun

Record due 9/4 via Heavenly Recordings / Cooperative Music
Watch "Shut Eye" now

WATCH: "Shut Eye"

Heavenly Recordings are thrilled to announce the release of Into The Diamond Sun, the long-awaited debut from Stealing Sheep, on September 4th, 2012.

What's in the water up on Merseyside? It's as if there's an endless source of almost psychedelic otherness running deep beneath the place. It's there in the music of everyone from the La's to Ladytron; an off-kilter wonder that sets the place and its art apart from the rest of Great Britain.

Stealing Sheep are very much a group channelling that source. You could hear it in their first recordings, released collectively as the Noah & The Paper Moon e.p. And its there flowing throughout their debut album proper, Into The Diamond Suna collection of songs that don't so much defy genres as gleefully hand-pick the most mellifluous elements of everything from voodoo folk, DIY pop, post punk and analogue electronica, and stitch them together into a glorious harmonic whole.

Recorded at Mello Studios with Sam Crombie, Stealing Sheep's debut album proper is an Olympian leap forward, so much so that at points the record sounds like it's arrived from its own private universe. Whereas on one track - White Lies – the group could be the much-missed Broadcast closing the main stage of the Green Man festival, on another they sound not a million miles from a properly wigged out Go Go's (Genevieve). Elsewhere, ghostly piano codas (Bear Tracks) brush up against galeophobic warnings about the perils of the seaside (Shark Song).

Into the Diamond Sun is a glimmering, shimmering work, where Rebecca, Emily and Lucy's unique visions of music warp into a singular whole. It's also an exceptional addition to Liverpool's celebrated lineage of unconventional art and music.

Dum Dum Girls new End of Daze EP

Sub Pop to release Dum Dum Girls new End of Daze EP on September 25th!
Updated summer tour schedule!
 Plus – Watch Rhapsody acoustic session for “Mine Tonight”;
Tour includes appearances at Lollapalooza, Osheaga, Maha festivals
"Mine Tonight" (Rhapsody acoustic session):

Sub Pop is pleased to share release details for Dum Dum Girls' End of Daze EP, due out September 25th on CD, LP and digitally. The EP is led by the single "Lord Knows", along with track highlights "Mine Tonight", "I Got Nothing", and a cover of Strawberry Switchblade’s “Trees and Flowers”.  The band recently recorded an acoustic rendition of "Mine Tonight" for Rhapsody.com, which you can watch now via YouTube. EP track list below.

In advance of the release, Dum Dum Girls have scheduled a series of tour dates, beginning July 21st in Brooklyn, NY for House of Vans and ending on August 11th in Omaha, NE at Maha Festival. Along the way, the band has scheduled festival appearances at Osheaga in Montreal (August 3rd) and Lollapalooza in Chicago (August 5th).  Full tour schedule below.

Time heals all wounds, or so the phrase goes.  For the realists, perhaps time only focuses events and allows us to move on after evolving on a personal level.  For the dreamers however, time gives them -- or maybe demands -- the perspective of every angle, every possibility, every opportunity to wring out whatever is born from experience.  Simple moments alone can magnify the processing and expressing of these perspectives, culminating in a deeper empathy, and for a select few, a muse for new artistic expression.  Such seems the fate of Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls.

Much has been written of her personal trials, but no words speak better of her handling of experience than her musical output.  The new EP out on Sub Pop (September 25, 2012) titled End of Daze offers a bracing, daring sonic example of an artist evolving in their understanding of the world.

Two of the songs, "Mine Tonight and "I Got Nothing," were written immediately following the Only In Dreams session.  They were recorded in New York City with Sune Rose Wagner of The Raveonettes in February 2011, as was the Strawberry Switchblade cover of "Trees and Flowers."  Intended as b-sides, their nature was of another beast entirely, and Dee Dee set them aside for a future, more atmospheric release

Diamond Rugs, the collaboration between John McCauley (Deer Tick), Robbie Crowell (Deer Tick), Ian Saint Pe (The Black Lips), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Hardy Morris (Dead Confederate) and Bryan Dufresne (Six Finger Satellite), played on CBS' Late Show With David Letterman on Monday.  The band played a rowdy rendition of "Blue Mountains," the single from their debut full-length, Diamond Rugs, which was released on Partisan Records in May.  In case you missed it, the video can be seen HERE.  Bloggers, feel free to post!

Diamond Rugs was chosen by VICE Magazine as their "Album of the Month" for July 2012. Said VICE, "I see what you've done here, Diamond Rugs. You made the soundtrack to Beer. Nice job. I can't wait for the sequel, This is How to Not be a Boring Pussy."  The record landed at #1 on Paste Magazine's "Best Albums of 2012 (So Far)" list, celebrated for being "sweaty and unpolished with just the right amount of self-awareness--everything a great rock record should be." SPIN called the record a "raucous, loose hootenanny," and FILTER agreed, noting "this ain't no Chickenfoot; this is the really really real deal."  Diamond Rugs made their live NYC debut this past week, playing a surprise show at The Bell House, followed by a performance at Central Park Summerstage opening up for Alabama Shakes.  Look out for a fall tour announcement soon!

How To Dress Well "Total Loss"

How To Dress Well photographed by Andrew Volk

How To Dress Well is the stage name of songwriter and producer Tom Krell. Krell's burgeoning career began in 2009 when, having just moved from Brooklyn to Berlin, his songs began to emerge online via a hugely prolific string of free, digital EPs posted in anonymity on his blog. Combining a gorgeous falsetto with fractured R&B-influenced beats, an instinctive ear for subtly devastating melody and elements of noise, sound collage and avant-garde composition, Krell's debut album Love Remains offered a beautiful window into a startlingly realised artistic imagination. Praised for both its conceptual strength and immediate emotional resonance, Love Remains duly garnered vast critical acclaim and highlights such as "Ready For The World" saw Krell accredited with having given birth to a new, narcotized strain of R&B that has since spawned a host of imitators. Now, come September 18th, we will see him pull back the curtain on a whole new body of work with his new album Total Loss, released on Acephale.

Recorded over a span of 15 months in Brooklyn, Chicago, Nashville and London, Krell says that period of time was a long year that he spent "very unhappy and confused. I found myself feeling stranded, alone and depraved, and generally run the fuck down...while writing these songs I was trying to learn to lose in a meaningful way and to sustain loss as a source of creative energy". Where Love Remains was a study of love in its darkest hour, Total Loss is an attempt to find one's way out of darkness, even when there seems to be no light ahead. Co-produced by Rodaidh McDonald (the XX, King Krule), the album touches on many of the same sounds as Love Remains but incorporates a range of other influences and showcases Krell's evolution as an artist. The increased fidelity of these recordings also highlights Krell's arrangements and graceful voice in ways Love Remains had only hinted at.

All the elements of Love Remains that enraptured are still present here - the noisiness, the moodiness, the layers of swarming voices - but stand alongside other complex elements: the elegant weeping arcos and pizzicatos of neo-classical music, the rude drums of trap-rap, and the sweet, special and sentimental moments of Janet Jackson's Velvet Rope are all swept up and embraced in the deep beauty of Total Loss. So the fractured hip-hop beats of "How Many?" sit alongside the cinematic strings of  "World I Need You, Won't Be Without You (Proem)", and the deeply affecting "Talking To You" (in which Krell executes a duet, of sorts, with himself) precedes the transcendent sweep of "Set it Right", before the glacial beauty of "Ocean Floor For Everything" brings everything to a quietly devastating close.

Krell states that Total Loss is "an opening-up", describing it as an "album about sharing." So, where Love Remains was an expression of intense and maybe isolating intimacy with pain, Total Loss is about the rare sharing that can go on between people that pierces through the undeniable, sometimes unshakable struggle and pain of life. As Krell himself says, "I'm trying to use this sharing to orient my life--- call it true hope, or love."

*Magic Castles Supporting

Brian Jonestown Massacre returns to the United States in August to tour supporting their new album, Aufheben, released through Anton Newcombe’s own ‘a’ Records in May 2012. Earlier this spring, the band completed tour dates on the west coast and southwest including headlining Psych Fest in Austin, TX. Then followed sold out dates in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Adel in Australia and onward to Europe selling out venues in Amsterdam, Berlin, London, and Paris.

Just added and approved for posting, listen to “Blue Order New Monday” at http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F50913745%3Fsecret_token%3Ds-kODnM&show_artwork=true&secret_url=true

Also approved for posting, share “I Want To Hold Your Other Hand” here: http://soundcloud.com/cargorecords/05-i-wanna-hold-your-other/s-HFbh6

Opening for Brian Jonestown Massacre on the East coast and Midwest dates is the Minneapolis band, Magic Castles who released their eponymous double album in March 2012 through ‘a’ Records.

Anton Newcombe remembers, "The song that introduced me to Magic Castles was ‘Ballad of the Golden Bird.’ I really think it is special, so much so, I decided to ask the group if I could release this record through my label, ‘a’ Records. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..."

Regarding the Brian Jonestown Massacre’s album title, Aufheben or Aufhebung is a German word with several seemingly contradictory meanings, including "to lift up,” "to abolish’” or "to sublate.” The term has also been defined as "abolish," "preserve," and "transcend." In philosophy, aufheben is used by Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact.

Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded the new album in Berlin at Anton Newcombe’s studio and the infamous East German Radio Station “Studio East.”

Original member of the band, Matt Hollywood, plays on this album. It also features Will Carruthers (Spacemen 3, Spritualized), Constantine Karlis (Dimmer), and Thibault Pesenti (Rockcandys) plus vocal performances by Eliza Karmasalo (in Finnish).

This album brings the traditional Brian Jonestown Massacre sound mixed with eastern influences, bringing it up to date with the benefit of all the additional weirdness that's been discovered in the past 40 years.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre has been somewhat of a musical commune for many respected musicians over the years, a band from the 1990’s that has spurned other great bands ever since. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks, The Silver Rockets, The Black Angels, The Ravenettes, The Dilettantes (to name a few) are all part of this musical family tree. Indeed, this is a band that has witnessed many incarnations, since its inception in San Francisco in 1992.

Two dozen band members later and numerous “ups and downs” (some have been famously sensationalized in the media), the one thing that has always remained consistent for this psychedelic collective, is front man Mr. Anton Alfred Newcombe.

Lavender Diamond

(Los Angeles, CA) - On September 25, Paracadute will release Incorruptible Heart, the long-awaited follow-up to Lavender Diamond's 2007 full-length debut, Imagine Our Love. The Los Angeles-based quartet - comprising Becky Stark (vocals), Jeff Rosenberg (guitar), Steve Gregoropolous (piano) and Ron Regé Jr. (drums) - recorded the album with OK Go's Damian Kulash, Jr. and longtime Flaming Lips collaborator Dave Fridmann at Fridmann's upstate New York base. Incorruptible Heart will be available in CD, vinyl and digital formats. (See below for track listing.) Lavender Diamond's official website (lavenderdiamond.net) launched today and the band will announce tour dates shortly. Lavender Diamond is streaming "Oh My Beautiful World" on SoundCloud and offering the song for download on the newly-launched website.

Stream "Oh My Beautiful World" on SoundCloud:

Download "Oh My Beautiful World":

Incorruptible Heart's diamond-light shines through its every facet from strings performed by The Calder Quartet and horns by longtime Brian Wilson compatriot Probyn Gregory to magical cover art by drummer (and graphic novelist) Regé and the singular, celestial voice of Stark.

"With its swoops and flutters and trills, her singing is one of the indie world's most joyful noises, a free-flowing river of feeling...Stark's melodies tumble out of her like she's making them up as she goes," said The Village Voice in a review of Lavender Diamond's debut album.

Since Imagine Our Love, Stark has performed with The Decemberists, She & Him, the L.A. Ladies Choir, The Living Sisters and has released a 7-inch with actor John C. Reilly on Jack White's Third Man label. She has also appeared in films alongside Harry Shearer ("The Simpsons," "This is Spinal Tap") and Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon - which perhaps helps explain why Incorruptible Heart was two years in the making.

While heartbreak is a central theme of Incorruptible Heart, Lavender Diamond renders sorrow with a kaleidoscopic brilliance. The exquisite album opener - and first single - "Everybody's Heart's Breaking Now" is simultaneously shimmering and sobering in its examination of global issues. Songs like "Just Passing By" and "Come Home" grapple with loss, but Lavender Diamond posits that heartache is just as essential to the cycle of love as celebration (the latter is wonderfully evoked in "Oh My Beautiful World").

"Oh what makes us breaks us apart/And it takes us right to the heart," sings Stark in "Dragonfly." "And it shakes us/And gives us a start /And it wakes us/And opens our arms."

Turning from soaring electro-pop ("Light My Way") to joyful revelry ("Perfect Love," featuring M. Ward on guitar) to the ethereal, operatic ("All The Stars"), this is a work of bold and uncompromising creativity that cuts through the hyper-saturation of modern life, straight and true as an arrow mounted on a light beam.
